The appointment of José Maria d'Almeida Rodrigues to replace the outgoing director of the PJ seems to be widely popular with serving police officers in Portugal. The fact that Rodrigues is an officer from within their ranks would appear to be the reason.

Au Portugal, plusieurs inspecteurs contactés ce soir, ont affirmé leur surprise et satisfaction avec la nomination de leur collègue Almeida Rodrigues à la tête de la Police Judiciaire (PJ), en remplacement d’Alipio Ribeiro, le directeur national démissionnaire.

Throughout his carrer in the PJ he has been faced with a few difficult, and high profile media cases, notably the investigation of crimes of satanic inspiration in Aveiro and of the serial killer of Santa Comba Dao. More recently he was behind the arrest of public enemy number one in Spain, known as, "El Solitario," charged with the murder of three people and of thirty armed bank robberies.

Enfants Kidnappés 5/05/08: McCanns backing out of the media spotlight.

This photo is published today on the Enfants Kidnappés web site. I thought it looked familiar. Isn't that the same clothes they were wearing when they did their appeal outside the church in Praia da Luz last year, soon after Madeleine disappeared? Maybe it's just the saddest photo that Enfants Kidnappés could find.

The McCanns are leaving the media spotlight again....haven't they done that a couple of times before? How many interviews in the past week? And why choose the Anglican church for the service to mark one year since Madeleine disappeared? Is the local Catholic church too small to accommodate all the news media? They've had a good run with the media machine and now they want to be left alone. Maybe it's not as easy as that. Perhaps a few journalists will still harp on about that reconstruction, the one that Gerry would do if it was televised, but now thinks would not be helpful.

At first glance today's article on the Enfants Kidnappés web site appears to be very much a repeat of the McCanns' media machine press releases, but I shall see what it looks like once I have translated it properly!

Et ils ont précisé qu'ils souhaitaient que l'attention des médias sur eux disparaisse. La couverture médiatique est "insoutenable" ont-ils dit. Ils ont même suggéré que cette couverture médiatique pourrait avoir conduit la PJ portugaise à les nommer "arguidos".

Leaving the media spotlight. (Or words to that effect!)

The McCann parents, Kate and Gerry, would like to leave the media spotlight after May 12th (So, not yet then?) the date on which Madeleine would have celebrated her fifth birthday. It was during one of their last, "interviews," that the couple stated they they had survived these last 12 months because they did not blame each other. And they stated that they wished the attention of the media on them would disappear. The media coverage is, "unsustainable," they said. They have even suggested that this media coverage could have led the PJ to name them, "arguidos." (Wasn't there something about dogs, traces of blood, and perceived inconsistencies in witness statements?)

Gerry a déclaré: "Regardez où cela nous a conduit et les problèmes que cela a créés. Je suis sur que la couverture médiatique a influencé ce qui s'est passé au Portugal en générant une pression, et quand les gens sont sous pression, de mauvaises décisions sont prisent... Nous avons lancé une campagne qui est très vite devenu un géant sur lequel nous n'avions aucun contrôle".

Garry stated: "Look at where that has led us and the problems that it has created. I a, sure that the media coverage has influenced what happened in Portugal in generating pressure, and when people are under pressure, bad decisions are taken...We launched a campaign that very quickly became a giant over which we had no control. (And a million quid, Gerry. Don't forget the million quid! - And that little online shoppe looks like a nice earner!)

Kate a déclaré: "Les informations sur mon mari et moi sont hors de propos et éloigne les gens de l'objectif initial: retrouver Madeleine. L'attention des médias diminuera après l'anniversaire de Madeleine, et c'est un soulagement".

Kate stated: "The information on my husband and me detracts from the subject and takes people away from the main objective: to find Madeleine. The attention of the media will diminish after Madeleine's birthday and that's a relief."

Les parents ont parlé de leur frustration dans l'enquête.

Gerry a déclaré qu'il était "extrêmement frustrant" de se voir refuser l'accès à l'ensemble des pièces du dossier: "Nous ne savons pas ce qui a été fait. C'est incroyablement frustrant". Kate parle également de sa colère quant au fait que les informations recueillies par les polices britanniques et portugaises n'aient pas été répercutée vers eux. Elle a juré de poursuivre les recherches de sa fille qui à son avis, a été enlevée et serait toujours en vie. "Nous n'avons accès à aucun éléments et nous n'avons aucune information sur ce qu'elle est devenue. De toute évidence, cette information existe. Nul ne peut exister sans être connu ou vu par quelqu'un. Il s'agit d'un crime odieux et d'une petite fille totalement innocente. Ce serait terrible si on ne continuait pas à chercher madeleine" déclare Kate.

The parents spoke of their frustration with the enquiry.

Garry stated that it was, "extremely frustrating," to be denied access to all the evidence in the file: "We don't know what has been done. It is incredibly frustrating." Kate also speaks of her anger about the fact that the evidence gathered by the British and Portuguese police has not been passed on to them. She vowed to continue the search for her daughter who, in her opinion, was abducted and will still be alive. "We have no access to any details and we have no information on what has developed. From all accounts, this information exists. Nothing can exist without being known or seen by somebody. It is a heinous crime on a totally innocent little girl. It would be terrible if they do not keep looking for Madeleine," states Kate. (Maybe it's because the police don't normally give suspects access to all the evidence!)

Les parents McCann ont également exprimé leur gratitude au cours d'un office religieux à proximité de leur domicile à Rothley. Prenant la parole après l'office, au nom de toute la famille, le grand-oncle de Madeleine, Brian Kennedy a déclaré: "Nous tenons à remercier tous les membres de l'église mais aussi ceux qui ne sont d'aucune Église particulière d'être parmi nous et de se souvenir de tous les enfants disparus de par le monde et surtout, bien sûr, de notre propre Madeleine. Cette semaine a été difficile et nous avons reçu de nombreux messages d'ici et des quatre coins du pays qui nous ont été d'un grand secours. Nous avons invités les gens de toutes les confessions à prier nombreux pour ces enfants et leurs familles dans leurs propres lieux de culte. Qu'ils sachent combien leurs prières sont appréciés".

The McCann parents have also expressed their gratitude during a church service near their home in Rothley. Taking the floor after the service, Madeleine's great-uncle, Brian Kennedy, speaking for the whole family, stated, "We give our thanks to all members of the church but also those who are of no particular church for being with us and to remind ourselves of all the missing children of the world, and above all of course, our own Madeleine. This week has been very difficult and we have received countless messages from here and across the country, which have been a great help to us. We have invited people of all faiths to pray for these children and their families in their own places of worship. May they know how much their prayers are appreciated."

One of the strong points of the mass celebrated at the church of Our Lady of Light in Praia da Luz was the message of thanks, writtne by Kate and, "signed," by Maddie. The aunt, Patricia Cameron, read a moving message written by Madeleine's mother and signed by the five members of the family: Kate, Gerry, Maddie (Didn't they say she didn't like being called Maddie?), Sean and Amelie. The message expressed thanks, "for the help and the human warmth," that the McCanns say they felt on the part of the Praia da Luz residents who, "helped to console the family." "The manifestation of your faith in Maddie exceeds our expectations so much that it brings tears to our eyes," said Kate's message.

La thèse de l'homicide: un suspect portugais ?!

Le criminologue Barra da Costa garantit avoir un document indiquant un suspect "potentiel" déjà connus pour six crimes d'abus sexuels et qui pourrait être impliqué dans la disparition de Madeleine. Il considèrerait comme "très grave si le suspect n'était pas repris dans l'enquête en cours" menée par la PJ. Intervenant hier lors d'une conférence organisée par l'Association contre l'Exclusion par le Développement, l'ancien inspecteur de la PJ a préféré ne pas avancer plus de détails sur le suspect. "J'ai des informations très importantes qui permettent de sérieux soupçons au niveau d'une personne impliquée dans l'affaire. D'ici trois mois, quand le secret de justice sera levé, je vérifierai cette piste dans les dossiers" s'est contenté de dire Barra da Costa tout en ajoutant qu'il risque de se faire agresser si il dénonce le suspect. Le criminologue a insisté sur la thèse de l'homicide de la petite britannique...

The criminologist Barra da Costa guarantees that he has a document indicating a, "potential," suspect already known for six crimes of sexual abuse and who could be implicated in Madeleine's disappearance. He would consider it as, "very serious if the suspect were not included in the ongoing investigation," led by the PJ. Speaking yesterday at a conference organised by the Association against Exclusion by Development, the former PJ inspector preferred not to offer more details about the suspect. "I have very important information which throws very serious suspicion on a person implicated in the case. In three months time when the secrecy of justice is lifted, I will check this lead in the files," Barra da Costa contented himself to say while adding that he risks being attacked if he denounces the suspect. The criminologist insisted that the theory of murder of the little British girl.......

I find it slightly macabre that Kate McCann's message to the people of the church in Praia da Luz should be, "signed," by Maddie, who by most people's reckoning, is probably long gone from this earth. And did Kate really write, "Maddie.?" Surely there was a report very early on about Kate's telling a journalist that Madeleine hated being called Maddie?

Selon Pinto Monteiro, Procureur General de la République portugaise (PGR), les enquêteurs de la Police Judiciaire n’auraient pas de quoi en avoir honte si leurs investigations à la disparition de Madeleine McCann venaient à se révéler infructueuses car "il s’agit d’un crime très difficile d’élucider".

According to Pinto Monteiro, Attorney General of the Portuguese Republic, the PJ have no reason at all to be ashamed if their investigations into Madeleine McCann's disappearance do not prove to be fruitful because, "it is a very difficult crime to clear up."

"Ce type de crime est toujours extrêmement difficile d'enquêter. Il y a un million d'enfants disparus par année dans le monde et moins de 20% sont retrouvées," à dit Pinto Monteiro soulignant que la police portugaise à fait tout ce qui était possible.

"This type of crime is always very difficult to investigate. Every year a million children go missing in the world and fewer than 20% of them are found." Pinto Monteiro said, stressing that the Portuguese police had done everything possible.

"Notre police fait tout ce que ferait toute autre police", affirmait aujourd’hui Pinto Monteiro soulignant qu'il va falloir attendre la fin de l'enquête pour comprendre le travail des enquêteurs.

Le Procureur Générale de la République est nommé et exonéré par le Président de la République, sous proposition du Gouvernement. C'est le seule poste du Ministère Public et de la magistrature des tribunaux judiciaires sujet à désignation par le pouvoir politique. C’est à lui qu'incombe la direction, coordination et surveillance de l'activité du Ministère Public.

Selon la même source, le secret de justice autour de l’enquête à la disparition de Madeleine va se maintenir jusqu’au mois d’aout, après quoi, passés les vacances judiciaires, le MP serait prêt à avancer vers le procès.

On the computer were the notes on which the priest was basing the preparation of the sermon for the ceremonies planned to mark the first anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance, but also all the personal emails and confidential exchanges with Kate and Gerry McCann, even after their departure for the UK. The burglar also took a mobile phone, containing all the private telephone numbers, including those of Madeleine's parents.

Another victim of burglary, a holiday-maker of Belgian origin resident in Spain, saw his camera, containing photos taken during his holiday in Praia da Luz, disappear from his house. The burglar had not hesitated to get himself into the house during the night, when everyone was sleeping on the floor, and in spite of the presence of objects of inestimable value, the camera was the only thing taken.

Plus récemment, au Portugal, l’habitation voisine de celle appartenant à l’inspecteur Gonçalo Amaral à elle aussi été la cible des cambrioleurs. Selon une source de la police locale, le cambrioleur se serait trompé de maison, emportant finalement que des documents.

More recently, the residence neighbouring inspector Gonçalo Amaral's apartment was the target of burglars. According to a local police source, the burglar got the wrong house, in the end taking away only some documents.

Seems that those people are very unlucky, victims of strange coincidences, or maybe we could decide that too many items, linked directly or indirectly to the Madeleine case, seem to be going missing.

Apparently the McCanns have instructed their lawyers to try to ban the publication of the Gonçalo Amaral book, "The Truth of the Lie." If they do not succeed in banning it, the McCanns would like to see any reference to the events surrounding Madeleine's disappearance edited out. Their lawyers are pouring over the question of whether Amaral can write about these events, even if he has retired from the PJ. I find myself wondering if this is because they feel that they are not allowed to talk about these events, or if there are things which the McCanns would rather the general public did not know.

After his departure from the PJ, Gonçalo Amaral intends to initiate legal action against several British media who, being unable to find a flaw in his professional work, had chosen to depict the inspector as a drunk, fat, etc.

If the book, "The Truth of the Lie," - date of publication still to be decided - is not about Gonçalo Amaral's personal opinion on Madeleine's disappearance, it allows the readers to understand the work of the Portuguese and British police which led to the McCanns being constituted as arguidos.
According to the lawyer António Paulo Santos, who is representing the inspector, in, "The Truth of the Lie," Gonçalo Amaral does not give his personal opinion on Madeleine's disappearance.

"Le livre sera le récit de quelqu'un qui à vécu l’investigation de l’intérieur, mais aussi de tous les faits qui l'entourent. Il interprète les faits et les indices", affirme l’avocat, soulignant que le sujet du livre, prévu en portugais et anglais, n’est pas Maddie mais plutôt l’enquête à sa disparition.
En anglais, c’est au tour de Kate et Gerry McCann d’annoncer qu’ils négocient la publication d’un livre qui raconte leur expérience après la disparition de leur fille. Selon plusieurs sources, une avance de plus d’un million et deux cents mil euros à été proposé au couple pour leur récit.

"The book will be the account of someone who has lived the investigation from the inside, but also all the facts surrounding it. He interprets the facts and the clues," the lawyer states, stressing that the subject of the book, planned in Portuguese and English, is not about Maddie but rather the investigation into her disappearance.
In England, it is the the turn of Kate and Gerry McCann to announce that they are negotiating the publication of a book which recounts their experience after their daughter's disappearance. According to several sources, an advance of one million, two hundred Euros has been offered to the couple for their account.

Prévu pour le mois de juin, il démontre comment la diplomatie britannique à influencé le déroulement des investigations, notamment par la mise à disposition des McCann des moyens de l’état, mais il explique également quel à été le rôle de chaque intervenant.

Planned for the month of June, it shows how British diplomacy has influenced the course of the investigations, notably by the placing at the McCanns' disposal the services of the government, but it also explains the role of each of the intervening parties.

Enfants Kidnappés 29/04/08. The PJ contradict the information published by Sky News.

Truth and Lies. Following a report on Sky News about the attempted abduction of a young Dutch girl in the Algarve, comes the Enfants Kidnappés report. Apparently the PJ know nothing about this attempted abduction. Does this mean that it was reported directly to Sky News, but not to the PJ? Very strange!

La PJ dit ne pas être au courant d'une tentative d'enlèvement d'une mineure hollandaise en Algarve comme le publie Sky News. L'affaire impliquerait un suspect dont la description serait la même que celle faite dans la disparition de Madeleine. Un responsable officiel de la PJ du département de Portimao a rapporté à la presse portugaise que la PJ n'était au courant d'aucune situation de ce genre et qu'il n'y avait aucune enquête en cours à ce sujet.

The police contradict the information published by Sky News.

The PJ say they are not aware of an attempted abduction of a very young Dutch girl in the Algarve as published by Sky News. The case would implicate a suspect whose description would be the same as that given in the disappearance of Madeleine. An official of the PJ, from the Portimao department, reported to the Portuguese press that the PJ was not aware of any situation of this kind and that there was no current investigation on this subject.

Selon Sky News, la jeune hollandaise de 15 ans rentrait chez elle, vers 18h00 ce 11 mars dernier, après être allé dans un supermarché des environs. Elle aurait été suivie par un homme en jeep noir, vitres teintées qui aurait ouvert la porte de sa voiture empêchant l'adolescente de poursuivre son chemin. Il aurait, ensuite, essayé de forcer la jeune fille à monter à bord. L'hollandaise se serait débattue et aurait réussi à échapper aux griffes de son agresseur. La jeune décrit l'homme d'environ 40 ans, cheveux long, bague en or aux doigts. Selon Sky News, la description coïncide avec celle de l'homme que Kate et Gerry McCann croient avoir enlevé leur fille. Pour mémoire, l'homme du portait robot dressé dans l'affaire McCann a été identifié en son temps et lavé de tous soupçons dans cette affaire. Le papa de la jeune hollandaise a souhaité rester anonyme.

According to Sky News, the young 15 year-old Dutch girl was going home, at around 18.00 on March 11th, after having been to a local supermarket. She had been followed by a man in a black jeep with tinted windows. The man opened the car door to block the teenager's path. He then tried to force the young girl to get into the car. The Dutch girl struggled and succeeded in escaping from the grips of her attacker. The young girl described the man as being around 40 years old, long hair, gold rings on his fingers. According to Sky News, the description matches that of the man whom Kate and Gerry McCann believe abducted their daughter. For the record, the man portrayed in the sketch in the McCann case, was idenified at that time and cleared of all suspicion in the case. The young Dutch girl's father wished to remain anonymous.

Il est à noter que les Pays-Bas reviennent souvent depuis le début de la disparition de Madeleine. En effet, Gerry a travaillé aux Pays-Bas et y de nombreuses relations. En tous cas, ces éléments sont troublants. Certaines personnes, convaincues de la première heure et "contre vents et marées" de l'innocence des parents en sont arrivés à se demander: "Si les parents sont innocents, pourquoi la machine de communications de Clarence Mitchell cherche, parfois de façon très maladroite, à faire douter le public ?"

It is to be noted that the Netherlands comes up often since the beginning, with Madeleine's disappearance. In fact, Gerry worked in the Netherlands and knows many people from there. The woman who had seen Madeleine in a fuel station in Morocco lives or has lived in....the Netherlands. The woman who claimed to have seen Madeleine in Belgium is....Dutch. The young girl who said she saw Madeleine dancing in a restaurant in France, is...Dutch. The young girl in the Sky News article is...Dutch. Simple coincidence? In any case, these details are troubling. Some people, convinced from the very first and, "against winds and tides," of the parents' innocence, have come to wonder: "If the parents are innocent, why the Clarence Mitchell media machine, which sometimes very awkwardly, makes the public doubt?"

When Ben Needham went missing on a Greek island some years ago, his mother had to finally give up her search for him when she could no longer afford to eat. I don't recall any government minister sending in the troops, aka Clarence Mitchell, Sheree Dodd et al. Actually, I am sure that there have been other incidents of British children disappearing abroad, but I have never heard of there being intervention at this level of government or diplomacy. Very strange, I say.

Kate et Gerry veulent des garanties pour revenir au Portugal

Ce sont les avocats du couple qui ont entamé les premiers contacts, au plus haut niveau, afin d’obtenir une sorte d’immunité que puisse permettre à Kate et Gerry McCann d’effectuer le déplacement à Praia da Luz, au Portugal, sans être inquiétés.

It is the couple's lawyers who have initiated contacts, at the highest level, to obtain a sort of immunity which would allow Kate and Gerry to go to Praia da Luz in Portugal, without being harassed.

La démarche des hommes de loi à été suivie par l’intervention de la diplomatie britannique au Portugal. Selon une source au Ministère des Affaires Etrangers (Foreign Office) des contacts informels ont été effectués avec les autorités portugaises afin de connaître les réelles intentions du Procureur et de la Police Judiciaire (PJ), en particulier pour ce que concerne la reconstitution des événements du 3 mai 2007, jour de la disparition de Maddie, demandée par les enquêteurs.

The lawyers' approach was followed by the intervention of British diplomats in Portugal. According to a source at the Foreign Office, informal contacts have been made with the Portuguese authorities in order to find out the real intentions of the PJ's Public Prosecutor, in particular regarding the reconstruction of the events of May 3rd 2007, the day of Maddie's disappearance, requested by the investigators.

Dans le cadre de l’enquête en cours à la disparition de Madeleine McCann, la Police Judiciaire (PJ) prétend avoir accès aux mouvements des comptes bancaires de ses parents mais également à ceux des sept britanniques qui les ont accompagnés pendant leur séjour au Portugal.

Selon la chaine de télévision portugaise TVI, les enquêteurs veulent connaître la nature exacte des paiements avant et après la disparition de Madeleine.

As part of the on-going investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the PJ claim to have access to account transactions for the parents' bank accounts but also to those of the seven British people who accompanied them during their stay in Portugal.

According to the Portuguese TV channel TVI, the investigators would like to know the exact nature of payments before and after Madeleine's disappearance.

Arguidos dans l’enquête à la disparition de leur fille, les McCann vont continuer à garder ce statut malgré les pressions exercées par ses avocats et par la diplomatie britannique.

On leaving the British police building, after the interrogations, the inspector's silence, even for the Portuguese journalists, was only betrayed by a slight smile and by his air of exhaustion. Those who know the inspector from other cases, know that this can only signify one thing: that things as progressing as he would wish.

The McCanns want legal action to replenish the coffers of the Madeline Fund.

The lawyers for the McCann couple have initiated contacts with several British media, threatening them with legal action for their coverage in the case of the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine and their constitution as arguidos by the Portuguese authorities.

"Le groupe Express est, pour le moment, le principal visé par les McCann qui voudraient obtenir un règlement à l'amiable qui passerait pas le versement d’une compensation financière."

The Express group is, for the moment, the main target of the McCanns, who would like to obtain an amicable settlement, which would not rule out the payment of financial compensation.

The parents of Mari Luz, the little Spanish girl who disappeared 53 days ago in Huelva (Spain) were received this morning by the Portuguese authorities in Faro, whom they wanted to thank for the help given to them in the search for their daughter.

"Accompagnés par des représentants des autorités espagnoles, Juan José Cortés et Irena Suarez ont été reçus par le gouverneur civil et par le bourgmestre de la ville de Faro, capital de la région."

SOS Madeleine McCann blog says basically the same as Enfants Kidnappés about the new witness statements concerning Jet-ski man. The last paragraph is worth quoting.

A source close to the enquiry has confirmed that the PJ had received this information in May, via a member of the Ocean Club's staff, to whom the couple had related the whole story, but that the information had no connection to Madeleine's disappearance. "That information was verified and investigated," stated the same source.

I wonder who is digging up all these old stories, which all seem to have been investigated and ruled out by the PJ.
