Fourniret trial: Fabienne and Jeanne-Marie may also have been violated post-mortem

This is a continuation of the previous post concerning the case of Natacha Danais. I decided to post this Enfants Kidnappés article in two parts because it is very long and also because the details coming out at this trial are truly sickening. Writing up the trial reports has taken me to a place where I ponder the nature of evil. Does evil exist as a an energy or a force? For that matter, does goodness?

I do not believe that a person's soul can be evil. Yes, I do have a fundamental belief in the human soul and a belief that that soul is by its nature utterly pure. So, can I say that a person is evil or just that their actions or behaviour is evil? I think that what I come to is an idea that something is missing or distorted at the level of the person's emotional and mental processes. Genetic? I don't know and I am sure that most reputable scientists would hesitate to reach a conclusion on the subject. What I do think is that some people seem to become so poisoned at an emotional and mental level that what I would call the positive human emotions are absent or buried under so much toxicity that they hardly exist.

Michel Fourniret has brought evil into the courtroom in Charleville-Mézières. His odious presence there seems to be like a channel through which something awful flows through. If there is such a thing as, "pure evil," then there is something about Michel Fourniret, which has allowed him, as a person, to become a living conduit for it. At least, while he is in the hands of the judiciary, he is removed from perpetrating any further evil acts on young women and their families.

Dans le cas de Natacha, deux éléments renforcent la suspicion. Primo, le médecin légiste a constaté en certains endroits intimes du petit corps (1,48m...), des traces suspectes. Le Pr Rodat émet deux hypothèses : l'utilisation de tampons hygiéniques, ou une pénétration « alors que la victime n'était plus vivante ». La mère de Natacha est interrogée par Me Sabine Barz, conseil de la famille. Elle est formelle : « Natacha n'avait eu ses règles que deux fois, et elle utilisait des serviettes. Je le sais parce que c'est moi qui les achetais ».
Secundo : lors de l'instruction, Michel Fourniret a déclaré qu'avant d'abandonner le cadavre sur une dune vendéenne, il a pris soin de le baigner dans l'océan pour éliminer les traces de souillure. Auparavant, il avait poignardé sa proie à trois reprises, avec un outil quelconque. Puis, comme la fillette se débattait encore, il l'avait étouffée en plaquant contre sa bouche et son nez l'une de ses « grosses paluches », comme dirait Me Didier Seban.

In the case of Natacha, two pieces of evidence reinforce suspicion. Firstly, the coroner found suspicious traces in certain intimate areas of the little body (1.48m) . Dr Rodat poses two hypotheses: the use of sanitary tampons, or a penetration, "while the victim was no longer living." Natacha's mother was questioned by Me Sabine Barz, lawyer for the family. She is definite. "Natacha had only had two periods, and she used towels. I know because it was I who bought them."
Secondly, during the indictment, Michel Fourniret stated that before he left the body on a Vendée dune, he took care to bathe it in the ocean to eliminate traces of soiling. Previously, he had stabbed his victim three times, with some tool or other. Then, when the little girl still struggled, he had suffocated her by placing one of his, "huge hands," over her mouth and her nose, as related by Me Didier Seban.

C'est à cet instant que plusieurs personnes quittent la salle, écœurées. Michel Fourniret, pour autant, n'est pas un monstre. Il est bien pire que cela : un homme raté, qui fabrique à la chaîne des actes, des images, des mots, des silences, odieux. Une sorte de pellicule dont, au développement, on ne pourrait tirer qu'un négatif. Pourquoi la tentation de transformer certains criminels en créatures surnaturelles est-elle si forte qu'elle contamine même des magistrats ? La justice est-elle faite pour amplifier la voix de la meute qui gronde aux marches du palais ? L'audience se poursuit avec des questions adressées à Monique Olivier, laquelle, au bâtonnier Dupuis, affirme, pleine d'aplomb, qu'entre elle et son mari, « il n'y a jamais eu de pacte

It is at this moment that several people leave the room, sickened. Michel Fourniret, for so many, is not a monster. he is much worse than that: a wasted man, who manufactures a production line of odious acts, images, words and silences. A sort of film that can only be developed as a negative. Why is the temptation to transform certain criminals into supernatural creatures so strong that it affects even judges? Is justice made to amplify the voice of the mob that roars at the steps of the courthouse? The hearing continues with questions addressed to Monique Olivier, who, full of self-assurance, states to the president of the bar, that between her and her husband, "There was never a pact."

Le 25 juin, dans une nouvelle lettre : « Je donnerais cher pour te faire sortir de ta « résidence d'été » ». Et encore : « Tu es un petit taulard très attachant ». Monique Olivier, soudain bégayante, séparant ses bribes de phrases d'étranges aspirations, comme si elle sirotait un thé brûlant : « Il allait ressortir... La peur est là... »

The young attorney general, Xavier Lenoir, assistant at the public ministry, tamer of the, "monster," then makes a sharp intervention, taking the indictment back to its proper level. To Monique Olivier, who repeats angrily that she was terrified of M. Fourniret: "On June 24th 1991, you write to him, while he has been in prison since the previous day in Verdun for another assault. Monique Olivier, épouse et complice présumée de Michel Fourniret, a répété jeudi que la "peur" de son mari l'avait empêchée de le dénoncer entre 1987 et 2003, malgré un courrier de 1991, lu devant la cour d'assises des Ardennes, où elle lui témoigne son attachement.

Monique Olivier, wife and alleged accomplice of Michel Fourniret, repeated on Thursday that, "fear," of her husband had prevented her from denouncing him between 1987 and 2003, in spite of a letter from 1991, read before the Ardennes Court of Assizes, in which she pledges her commitment to him.

"J'avais peur de lui, en tout et pour tout", a répété Monique Olivier aux avocats des parties civiles qui se sont relayés pour la questionner sur son absence de réaction lors du meurtre de Natacha Danais, le cinquième des sept jugés à Charleville-Mézières et que Michel Fourniret a reconnu. "Je n'étais pas capable de lui dire quoi que ce soit. Sachant ce qu'il était capable de faire, j'avais peur", a ajouté l'accusée jugée pour complicité dans plusieurs dossiers. Depuis mercredi, la cour examine le meurtre de Natacha, une adolescente de 13 ans, enlevée sur un parking de supermarché le 21 novembre 1990. Son corps avait été découvert trois jours après sa disparition sur une plage en Vendée.

"I was totally afraid of him in every way," Monique Olivier repeated to the lawyers for the civil parties, who took it in turns to question her about her absence of reaction to the murder of Natacha Danais, the fifth of the seven being tried at Charleville-Mézières and which Michel Fourniret has admitted. "I was not capable of telling him anything. Knowing what he was capable of doing, I was afraid." added the accused, on trial for complicity in several cases. Since Wednesday, the court has been examining the murder of Natacha, a 13 year-old teenager, abducted on a supermarket car park on November 21st 1990. her body had been discovered three days after her disappearance on a Vendée beach.

Dans un extrait de lettre, lue devant la cour par le substitut du procureur Xavier Lenoir, Monique Olivier témoignait pourtant de son attachement à son mari. "J'espère que tu seras libéré très vite (...) Tu sais que tu es un petit taulard très attachant. Et tu sais que je suis collante", écrivait-elle en juin 1991 à son mari alors qu'il était incarcéré pour des faits d'agression et violence. "La peur est quand même là. Cela n'empêche pas de vivre avec la peur", s'est-elle justifiée à nouveau à l'audience. Le meurtre de Natacha Danais est le dernier des dossiers examinés par la cour -sur les dix jugés- dans lequel est impliquée l'épouse du tueur en série présumé.

In an extract from the letter, read before the court by the prosecutor's deputy, Xavier Lenoir, Monique Olivier pledges, again, her commitment to her husband. "I hope that you will be freed very quickly (....) You know that you are a very endearing little jailbird. And you know that I am clingy," she wrote in June 1991 to her husband while he was in prison for acts of aggression and violence. "The fear is, all the same, there. Nevertheless, I live with the fear," she again justified herself to the court. The murder of Natacha Danais is the last of the cases being examined by the court - of the ten being tried - in which she is implicated, the wife of the alleged serial killer.

En début d'après-midi, Michel Fourniret regagne sa place avec une mine de papier mâché. Les traits creusés, plus gris que son pull, il peine visiblement à rester muet face au soupçon de viol post-mortem. Me Pierre Blocquaux qui, depuis le premier jour, assume son rôle difficile avec une dignité exemplaire, sollicite cinq minutes de suspension pour qu'il puisse, avec ses deux confrères, s'entretenir avec leur client. Lorsqu'ils reviennent, c'est au tour de Me Barz de s'isoler brièvement avec la famille Danais. Chacun comprend que l'accusé, à nouveau, réclame le huis clos. Réponse cinglante du camp des victimes : c'est non. L'Ardennais, qui avait reconnu n'avoir « pas de grandes révélations à faire », devient livide.

Devant la cour d'assises réunie à Charleville-Mézières, «l'ogre des Ardennes» n'a pas bronché face aux dires du légiste. «Il a juste passé un mot à son avocat, pour dire qu'il était prêt à en parler à huis clos», relate Me Sabine Barz. Demande refusée par les parties civiles, finalement «soulagées» d'en finir avec ce procès.

L'après-midi, Michel Fourniret a fait une "dérogation" à sa résolution de mutisme en tentant de s'adresser directement aux parents de Joanna Parrish, une Britannique de 20 ans, tuée en mai 1990 près d'Auxerre. Le 11 mars il a été mis en examen pour ce meurtre qu'il a toujours nié. Roger Parrish et Pauline Sewell étaient présents à l'audience mercredi et jeudi pour l'examen du dossier Danais. L'accusé a invoqué un défaut de "mémoire" et nié une confusion entre les meurtres de Natacha et Joanna, pour expliquer une contradiction dans une déposition où il disait avoir entièrement dévêtu Natacha. Le corps de celle-ci a été retrouvé à moitié déshabillé, celui de Joanna l'était entièrement.

In the afternoon, Michel Fourniret made an, "exemption," to his resolution of silence by trying to directly address the parents of Joanna Parrish, a British woman aged 20, killed in May 1990 near Auxerre. On March 11th he was placed under investigation for this murder which he has always denied. Roger Parrish and Pauline Sewell were present at the hearing on Wednesday and thursday for the examination of the Danais case. The accused claimed a, "memory," failure and denied a confusion between the murders of Natacha and Joanna, to explain a contradiction in a statement where he said he had completely undressed Natacha. Her body had been found half-undressed, that of Joanna completely.

Enfants Kidnappés: the McCanns' holiday apartment is to be re-let.

L'appartement sera à nouveau loué.

La propriétaire de l'appartement, d'où Madeleine a disparu au Portugal, veut le louer. Ruth McCann, la propriétaire de l'appartement 5a à Praia Da Luz, souhaite remettre en location la propriété de l'Ocean Club. Les revenus, bien légitime, de la location de l'appartement aux touristes, voulant séjourner à Praia Da Luz, s'élèvent à £ 19500 par an. L'appartement composé de deux pièces, est vide depuis le mois d'août. Le manque à gagner est indéniable. Toutefois, cette remise en location ne pourrait se faire avant le mois de juin. Selon certaines sources au Portugal, ce serait dû au fait que la PJ a encore besoin de l'appartement lors de la reconstitution prévue au mois de mai.

The owner of the apartment, from which Madeleine disappeared in Portugal, wishes to let it. Ruth McCann, the owner of apartment 5a in Praia da Luz, wants to put up the Ocean Club property for rent. The legitimate income from letting the apartment to tourists, holidaying in Praia da Luz, is raised to £19,500 a year. The apartment comprised of two rooms, has been empty since August. The loss of income is undeniable. However, the re-letting will not be able to be done before the month of June. According to certain sources in Portugal, this is due to the fact that the PJ still need the apartment during the reconstruction planned for the month of May.

Le journaliste espagnole, Nacho Abad, qui a divulgué à "Telecinco" des passages d'une audition de couple McCann, dit avoir des documents prouvant ses propos. "Si vous me demandez si j'ai des preuves de ce que j'avance, oui j'ai des preuves écrites. J'ai des documents". L'affirmation est de Nacho Adab, journaliste collaborateur du programme d'Anne Quintana sur Telecinco. Le journaliste s'est excusé de ne pas en dire plus et n'est pas surpris qu'on cherche à rejeter ces informations. "Ce que je peux dire, c'est que les McCann, eux-mêmes, ont confirmé tacitement cette version en parlant d'une fuite d'informations au sein de la PJ sans démentir l'information elle-même" avance le journaliste. La semaine dernière, Telecinco révélait un extrait d'un rapport de police faisant état des pleurs de Madeleine la veille de sa disparition et des propos de Kate suite aux réactions de Madeleine:
"Mère, pourquoi n'êtes vous pas venue, hier soir, alors que nous étions en train de pleurer ?" aurait dit Madeleine.

The journalist sticks to what he said.

The Spanish journalist, Nacho Abad, who divulged to, "Telecino," passages from the McCann couple's interview, said he had documents proving what he says. "if you ask me if I have proof of what I have put forward, yes I have written proof. I have documents." The assertion comes from Nacho Abad, a contributing journalist on Anne Quintana's programme for Telecino. The journalist apologised for not saying more about it and is not surprised that people are looking to refute the information. "What I can say, is that the McCanns themselves have tacitly confirmed this version by talking of a leak of information on the part of the PJ, without denying the information itself," the journalist says. Last week, Telecino revealed an extract from a police report, mentioning Madeleine's crying the day before her disappearance and Kate's subsequent suggestions about Madeleine's reactions.
"Mummy, why didn't you come, last night, when we were crying?" Madeleine is quoted as saying.

Dans le même rapport il serait écrit que: "Gerry et moi en avons parlé quelques minutes et nous avons décidé d'être plus vigilant auprès des enfants la nuit". La PJ continue de nier la moindre fuite en provenance de chez eux. Il est curieux de noter que c'est la première fois que le porte-parole des McCann accuse directement la PJ de fuite dans l'enquête. Pour toutes les autres fois, les accusations étaient plus diffuses. Quoi qu'il en soit, le Correio da Manha publie une information intéressante. Selon ce dernier, les documents dont question divulgués par le journaliste espagnole seraient des copies d'un rapport d'une agence de détectives engagé par les parents avant l'engagement de Metodo3. Notons que le journaliste espagnole avait promis plus de révélation dans l'émission de Telecinco du 15 avril dernier mais il n'en fût rien.

Quoted in the same report is: "Gerry and I discussed it for several minutes and we decided to be more watchful of the children at night." The PJ continues to deny that any leak came from them. It is curious to note that it is the first time that the McCanns' spokesperson directly accuses the PJ of leaks in the investigation. At all other times the accusations were more vague. Anyway, Correio da Manha publishes interesting information. According to the latter, the documents in question divulged by the Spanish journalist were copies of a report by a detective agency hired by the parents before they hired Metodo3. Note that the Spanish journalist had promised more revelations in the Telecino broadcast of April 15th, but there was nothing about it.

Pour évoquer son amie d'enfance Natacha Danais, Sabrina a choisi des paroles du chanteur Jean-Jacques Goldmann. Le président de la cour d'assises les lit pour le témoin : « C'était une petite fille sans histoire et très sage/Sa vie c'était douceur, rêves et nuages blancs/Mais d'autres gens en avaient décidé autrement. » Ces autres gens, ce sont Michel Fourniret et Monique Olivier, impliqués dans le meurtre de cette fille de 13 ans retrouvée sur une plage de Vendée le 24 novembre 1990.

Hardly out of court, the evil couple abducts Natacha.

In memory of her childhood friend Natacha Danais, Sabrina chose the words of the singer Jean-Jacques Goldman. The president of the Court of Assizes read them for the witness: "She was a little girl without a history and very wise/Her life was gentle, dreams and white clouds/But other people decided otherwise about her." These other people, they are Michel Fourniret and Monique Olivier, implicated in the murder of that 13 year-old girl, found on a Vendée beach on November 24th 1990.

Natacha Danais est la cinquième victime mineure du couple. Une succession de petits riens l'ont cruellement fait tomber entre les mains du tueur ardennais et de sa complice. Le 21 novembre 1990, cette frêle collégienne au caractère entier part en famille au Leclerc de Rezé (Loire-Atlantique). Sa mère a oublié son porte-monnaie. Elle prie Natacha de retourner chercher de l'argent à la maison toute proche. « Natacha m'a demandé de venir avec elle, j'ai dit non », relate en pleurs la jeune soeur de la victime, hantée par son refus.

Natacha Danais is the fifth under-age victim of the couple. A succession of little things made her cruelly fall into the hands of the Ardennes killer and his accomplice. On November 21st 1990, this frail, intense-natured schoolgirl, sets out with her family for Leclerc de Rezé (Loire-Atlantique). Her mother has forgotten her purse. She asks Natacha to go back and find some money at the house, which is quite close. "Natacha asked me to go with her, I said no," the victim's younger sister relates, in tears, haunted by her refusal.

La collégienne rechigne mais se met en route. A bord de sa camionette C15 sur le parking du centre commercial, Michel Fourniret aperçoit ce « beau petit sujet ». Lui et sa femme rentrent de Nantes où ils ont été condamnés pour avoir brûlé des tableaux chez l'ex-compagnon de Monique Olivier. « Fourniret sortait du palais de justice, je ne comprends pas », dénonce à la barre la soeur aînée de Natacha. Pour elle aussi, les regrets sont éternels. Ce jour-là, elle pense bien avoir vu monter sa petite soeur à l'arrière d'un C15 blanc, scénario inconcevable tant Natacha est méfiante. Mais Fourniret a le don terrifiant de se montrer persuasif. Il demande à la collégienne l'adresse d'un médecin et elle grimpe dans la fourgonnette, signant son arrêt de mort.

The schoolgirl is reluctant but sets off. In his C15 van in the parking area of the commercial centre, Michel Fourniret notices this, "beautiful little person." He and his wife are returning from Nantes, where they have been convicted of burning pictures at the home of Monique Olivier's ex-partner. "Fourniret walked out of the courthouse, I don't understand." Natacha's older sister stated at the bar. For her too, the regrest are ever-lasting. That day, she remembers seeing her little sister climb into the back of a white C15, an inconceivable scenario, Natacha was so distrustful. But Fourniret has a terrifying gift of persuasion. He asks the schoolgirl for the address of a doctor and she climbs into the van, signing her death warrant.

Elle s'est défendue de manière énergique

Hier, Monique Olivier a raconté l'enlèvement, affirmant être restée « passive ». S'il a reconnu les faits, Michel Founiret est resté muet. Un policier belge relate à sa place la tentative de viol et le meurtre : « Elle s'est défendue de manière énergique. J'ai enfoncé doucement le poinçon dans la poitrine de Natacha. Elle m'a dit Qu'est ce que vous m'avez fait, je saigne ? Je l'ai étranglée de mes deux mains, les pouces en vis-à-vis sous le menton. » La victime est lavée pour effacer toute trace et abandonnée dans les dunes. Sa mort restera une énigme pendant quatorze ans.

She defended herself vigorously.

Yesterday, Monique Olivier related the abduction, stating that she remained, "Passive." If he accepted the facts, Fourniret remained silent. A Belgian policeman, in his turn, relates the attempted rape and murder: "She defended herself vigorously. I gently thrust the screwdriver into Natacha's chest. She said to me What have you done to me, I am bleeding? I strangled her with my two hands, thumbs touching under her chin." The victim was washed to remove all evidence and left in the dunes. Her death remained a mystery for fourteen years.

« J'avais l'impression que la justice et la police ne faisaient rien. Un vrai calvaire », déclarera la mère de Natacha. Traumatisée, elle n'a pas eu la force de témoigner hier. « J'aurais dû le dénoncer, mais j'avais peur de lui, une peur permanente », tente de se justifier Monique Olivier. « Il suffisait d'un mot pour arrêter la série criminelle. On aurait pu sauver Natacha », insiste M e Didier Seban, partie civile. Mais l'accusée s'est tue de longues années, se protégeant de ses propres crimes. Il a fallu attendre ses aveux de juin 2004 pour connaître la vérité sur le martyre de Natacha. De la petite victime, son frère a écrit : « Son coeur commençait tout juste à battre pour un garçon de son âge, et c'est l'horreur qui l'attendait. » La même horreur attendra d'autres jeunes filles encore.

"I had the impression that the judiciary and the police were doing nothing," declared Natacha's mother. Traumatised, she did not have the strength to make a witness statement yesterday. "I should have denounced him, but I was afraid of him, a permanent fear." Monique Olivier attempts to justify herself. "It would only have taken one word to stop the serial criminal. Natacha could have been saved," insists Me Didier Seban. But the accused kept silent for many years, protecting herself and her own crimes. It took until her confessions in June 2004 to learn the truth about Natacha's torture. Of the little victim, her brother wrote: "Her heart had only just started beating for a boy of her age, and this is the horror which was waiting for her." The same horror was waiting for still more young girls.

Dans ce dossier, le dernier dans lequel l'épouse du tueur en série présumé est impliquée, Michel Fourniret est accusé d'avoir enlevé l'adolescente puis de l'avoir étranglée, après avoir tenté de la violer. Son corps avait été retrouvé sur une plage de Vendée trois jours après sa disparition. La veille, ils avaient été condamnés par le tribunal correctionnel de Nantes pour avoir brûlé des tableaux d'André Michaux, le premier mari de Monique Olivier.

In this case, the last in which the wife of the alleged serial killer is implicated, Michel Fourniret is accused of having abducted the teenager then strangling her, after having attempted to rape her. Her body had been found on a Vendée beach three days after her disappearance. Alors que son épouse s'éloignait, Michel Fourniret aurait violé la jeune fille, dont le corps avait été ensuite déposé sur une plage en Vendée.

Davina, une autre soeur de la victime, a fondu en larmes en racontant avoir refusé ce jour-là de l'accompagner chercher le porte-monnaie. "Depuis des années, elle vit avec ce poids sur les épaules de ne pas être allée avec elle. Ca aurait tout changé. Comme pour ma soeur qui l'a vue monter dans le véhicule, elle porte ce poids depuis 18 ans", a déclaré hors audience Christophe Grelier, le frère de Natacha.

The transcript is very long and is quite sickening. My heart goes out to the families who are sitting through this trial, hearing of the truly horrendous things that happened to their loved ones at the hands of the evil couple, Michel Fourniret and his wife, Monique Olivier. I have absolutely no sympathy for Monique Olivier and give no credence to her snivelling, cowardly excuses for herself.

While Michel Fourniret was defiling the dead body of a little girl, where was she? If women who have been violently abused by men, beaten to within an inch of their lives, can leave, she could have left. If she had been afraid, the police would have arrested her husband immediately on her statement and she would then have been safe. So, no. I do not believe a word of it. She stayed with Michel Fourniret through those long years of killings, rapes and tortures, and only confessed when it looked like the police were onto them.

I hope she gets the same sentence as Fourniret, a whole life sentence. If she gets out of prison, she will have to be protected for the rest of her life. She helped a vile piece of human sewage to take the lives of so many young women, in a truly unthinkable way, and in doing so she has virtually taken the lives of the families of those victims. She does not deserve to have any kind of life in a civilised society. She must never, ever be free.

"I am writing," he had thundered when Me Seban called on him. He refused to stand and to respond: "Because I heard you putting forward rubbish about Estelle Mouzin", he hurled. He also launched at the President, who was trying to calm him down: "I am not crying, I am shouting."

Me Seban: «Vous n'êtes pas non plus un ennemi, mais un accusé. Quand vous repassez le film, monsieur Fourniret, Natacha est -elle nue ou pas?» L'accusé rompt le ban: «J'ai terminé mon intervention.»

Fourniret announces: "I am going to make an exception to my position of principle. How many years have elapsed between these events (1990) and the telling of the events (2004) ? Many years. My memory, I think, is comparatively good, detailed, precise. Films are not stored badly in my memory. But there are overlays, errors and contradictions. Mardi matin, elle s'est certes encore adressée à sa fille, elle s'est surtout adressée aux accusés et avec une violence qui a glacé l'assistance : "Monsieur Fourniret, vous êtes un pitoyable bouffon, un imbécile malfaisant. Montrez-moi vos mains, montrez-moi vos mains qui ont écrasé le cou de ma fille. Dans son box, Michel Fourniret reste figé. Et vous, Madame, vous qui lui avez offert Elisabeth, c'est vous le monstre humain.

Undoubtedly, on Tuesday morning the emotion and the horror reached a climax. The emotion, when Marie Noëlle Bouzet continued the reading of the texts she had prepared for the hearing. Monique Olivier n'a pas eu un geste : «J'ai été lâche, je ne l'ai pas aidée.»

C'est un immense gâchis. Les gens ne sont pas de faïence et de porcelaine, on ne peut pas réparer.»

Michel Fourniret explique aussi le «processus» immuable qui le conduit à capturer des petites filles pures qu'il ne parvient pas à prendre par la force. Il aimerait qu'elles soient soumises et se donnent à lui. Il avait ainsi sussuré à Elisabeth Brichet : «Avec moi, tu vas découvrir quelque chose de bien» ; «Je pensais parvenir par une douce persuasion à ce que cette petite m'offre sa virginité.»

D'autres extraits vidéo* Auparavant, la cour a visionné trois extraits de cinq minutes, tirés d'une vidéo réalisée lors d'aveux de Monique Olivier recueillis par la police belge le 30 juin 2004. Sur cette vidéo, elle finit par avouer sa présence et celle de Sélim, alors âgé d'un an, dans la voiture lors de l'enlèvement de l'adolescente. Depuis l'ouverture du procès le 27 mars, Michel Fourniret, jugé pour sept meurtres aggravés et Monique Olivier pour complicité, refuse de s'exprimer sur les faits faute de huis clos.

Other video extracts. Previously, the court viewed three extracts of five minutes, taken from a video filmed during Monique Olivier's confessions, recorded by the Belgian police on June 30th 2004. On that video, she finished by admitting her presence and that of Sélim, then aged one year, in the car during the teenager's abduction. In a confident voice, the former nurse acknowledges having been, "an accomplice, but a forced accomplice," of her husband. "I should have had the courage to denounce him (....) rather than keep quiet," she added. The two accused remained impassive during the showing of the video. In Belgium, August 2nd 2002, the law allows the filming of interrogations of suspects on the authorisation of the presiding judge. The extracts shown on Tuesday are considered as evidence in the case and not exhibits. Since the opening of the case on March 27th, Michel Fourniret, on trial for seven aggravated murders and Monique Olivier for complicity, refuses to speak for himself about the facts without the proceedings being held in camera.

Chilean psychic said Maddie had died accidentally.

Convinced that she can find Madeleine McCann, the Chilean psychic, Isabel Cristina Avila reaffirmed today in Santiago that the child never left Portugal, adding that Maddie died by accident, without the intervention of third parties.

According to the psychic, known for having collaborated with the Chilean police in the search for missing persons, the place where the body is to be found was not searched with the thoroughness required: "they searched but not carefully enough," stated Isabel Avila.

This is not the first time that the psychic has spoken about the Madeleine case. In October 2007, she sent a sketch to the Portuguese ambassador to Chile showing the place where the police should search for the body.

Since the disappearance of Madeleine Beth McCann, on May 3rd 2007, the PJ has received several hundred letters, emails and telephone calls from people saying they could find the little girl. In spite of all the checks, mostly out of sight of the media, no lead has, as yet, led to Madeleine's being found. "

On Monday, the Ardennes Court of Assizes continued the examination of the Michel Fourniret murders, rapes or alleged attempted rapes, with the case of Elisabeth Brichet, aged 12, who disappeared near Namur (Belgium) on December 20th 1989, on her way home.
Her body was found in 2004 at the Chateau du Sautou in the Ardennes. On Monday, Elisabeth Brichet's mother criticised the Belgian and French judicial institutions.

"Elizabeth, (...) l'inconscience et l'incurie de la justice t'ont assassinée. (...) Quinze années d'erreurs d'un système judiciaire qui n'a que faire du viol et des tortures, sauf en temps de guerre", a déclaré à la barre Marie-Noëlle Bouzet, la mère d'Elizabeth, disparue à l'âge de 12 ans le 20 décembre 1989 près de Namur (Belgique) sur le chemin de son domicile."

"Elisabeth, (....) irresponsibility and negligence of the police have killed you. (...) Fifteen years of errors by a system of justice that only deals with rape and torture, except in times of war," stated Marie-Noelle Bouzet, mother of Elisabeth who disappeared at the age of 12 on December 20th 1989 near Namur (Belgium) on the way home.

La mère de l'adolescente avait été en octobre 1996 l'une des organisatrices de la Marche blanche en mémoire des enfants disparus qui avait rassemblé plus de 300.000 personnes dans les rues de Bruxelles, dans la foulée de la découverte des crimes du pédophile belge Marc Dutroux."

Abducted on December 20th 1989

Elisabeth Brichet had been abducted by the Fourniret couple on December 20th 1989 while she was on her way home after visiting a friend. Her abusers had marked her out and waited several hours before convincing her to get into their car, using the presence of their son Sélim, then a few months old, to instill trust in her. First of all they drove to their house in Floing, in the French Ardennes. Michel Fourniret, helped by Monique Olivier, who would have gone just to wash the victim at the request of her husband, who then would try to rape her without succeeding, according to the first statements in the investigation.

Michel Fourniret, selon de premières déclarations, avait à nouveau tenté de la violer, en vain, avant de l'étouffer avec un sac plastique et l'étrangler de ses mains. Le corps de la fillette avait été retrouvé en 2004 dans l'ancienne propriété de Fourniret, 15 ans après son enlèvement, à la suite des aveux de Monique Olivier en juin 2004."

"Peu après, Me Paul Lombard, l'avocat de Francis Brichet, le père d'Elisabeth, a exhorté Michel Fourniret à réussir "sa sortie" et à répondre aux questions. "Vous qui avez tous les courages horribles, peut-être aurez-vous un dernier courage, celui que vous devez à des familles qui ont souffert", a déclaré Me Lombard à fixant des yeux l'accusé."

The body found 15 years later.

The next day the couple took Elisabeth Brichet to the Chateau du Sautou. Michel Fourniret, according to the first statements, again tried to rape her, but in vain, before suffocating her with a plastic bag and strangling her with his hands. The little girl's body had been found in 2004 at the former Fourniret property, 15 years after her abduction, following Monique Olivier's confessions in June 2004.

At the opening of the trial, Michel Fourniret admitted the abduction, the kidnapping and the murder of the teenager. However, as during the investigation, he challenged the attempted rape. In this case, his wife Monique Olivier, who has also admitted the facts, was remanded for complicity.

A little later, Me Paul Lombard, lawyer for Francis Brichet, Elisabeth's father, encouraged Micehl Fourniret to manage, "his opening up," and to respond to questions. "You who have all the horrendous courage, perhaps you have one last courage, that which you owe to the families who have suffered," stated Me Lombard, eyes fixed on the accused.

After a moment's hesitation, Michel Fourniret finally reiterated his wish to have the proceedings held in camera.

Gerry et Kate McCann, les parents de la petite Madeleine disparue il y a près d'un an au Portugal, ont parlé aujourd’hui devant un petit groupe de parlementaires, pour la plupart des britanniques appartenant au Groupe du Parti populaire européen (PPE), dans le cadre de la présentation d’une déclaration écrite (une page A4 recto-verso, disponible en PDF) défendant la création d’un système d’alerte européen à utiliser lors de tout enlèvement d’enfant au sein des états membres.

Gerry and Kate McCann, parents of little Madeleine McCann who disappeared nearly a year ago in Portugal, spoke today before a samll group of parliamentarians, mostly British, belonging to the group, the European People's Party (EPP) in the context of the presentation of a written statement (One A4, double-sided page, available in PDF) supporting the creation of a European Alert system to be used in cases of child abduction in any member state.

Kate et Gerry McCann, toujours accompagnés par leur responsable en communication, Clarence Mitchell, ont été introduits au Parlement Européen par le conservateur Edward McMillan-Scott, vice-présidente du parlement, l’homme choisi pour amener Gerry et Kate à Bruxelles.

Kate and Gerry McCann, accompanied at all times by their spokesperson, Clarnece Mitchell, were introduced to the European Paliament by the Conservative member, Edward McMillan-Scott, Vice-President of the parliament, the man chosen to bring Gerry and Kate to Brussels.

Leur statut d’arguidos dans l’enquête à la disparition de leur fille Madeleine ne les a pas empêchés d’être présents à l’hémicycle mais la majorité des députés avait décidé de ne pas participer jugeant inopportune la visite du couple. Une polémique qui a marqué leur visite à Bruxelles et qui risque d’embarrasser les institutions européennes si Kate et Gerry McCann viennent un jour à être inculpés par la Justice portugaise.

Their status as arguidos in their daughter's Madeleine's disappearance did not prevent them from attending the assembly, but the majority of the representatives had decided not to participate, considering the couple's visit untimely. A controversy which marked their visit to Brussels and which risks embarrassing the European institutions if Kate and Gerry are one day indicted by the Portuguese police.

C’est d’ailleurs une des questions qui à causé le plus de nervosisme aux McCann pendant la conférence de presse qui à suivi la réunion de présentation de la déclaration, obligeant Clarence Mitchell à intervenir brusquement auprés des journalistes : "Ils ne sont accusés de rien et ont parfaitement le droit d’être ici", à dit leur chargé en communication.

This is one of the issues which caused the most unease towards the McCanns during the press conference which followed the meeting for the presentation of the statement, obliging Clarence Mitchell to intervene brusquely with the journalists: "They have not been accused of anything and have the perfect right to be here," said their spokesperson.

Même si Gerry ou Kate McCann n’ont eu aucun rôle dans la rédaction de la déclaration – une initiative de cinq parlementaires – c’est le couple qui à effectué sa présentation, devenant, le temps de quelques heures, des "experts" en disparition d’enfants, appelant aux représentants des 27 états membres à signer le document. Even if Gerry and Kate had nothing to do with the drafting of the statement - an initiative of five parliamentarians - it is the couple who presented it, becoming for a few hours, experts on missing children, calling on the representatives of the 27 member states to sign the document. A topic which is not new because in September last year a similar appeal was launched by the wife of the Commission's president, Durao Barroso.

Selon leur porte-parole, les McCann ont conclu leur visite à Bruxelles par plusieurs rencontres avec des parlementaires mais aussi avec l’ambassadeur du Royaume-Uni.

Que sont venus faire les McCann au Parlement Européen ?

Dans la pratique rien, du moins pour ce que concerne la création d’un future systéme d’alerte européen. Kate et Gerry McCann n’ont eu aucune participation ou responsabilité dans l’élaboration de la déclaration écrite qui à été présentée et leur présence passerais presque inaperçue s’il n’y aurait autant de médias, plus intéressés par la situation d’arguidos du couple dans l’enquête à la disparition de Maddie, que par l’actualité du parlement. Ils ont demandé la création d’un numéro de téléphone unique pour signaler une disparition. Un numero qui existe déjà depuis l’année passée : 116000.

What did the McCanns go to do at the European Parliament?

In practice nothing, at least as far as the creation of a future European alert system. Kate and Gerry had no involvement or responsibility for the drawing up of the written statement which was presented and their presence would have passed almost unnoticed if there hadn't been a strong media presence, more interested in the couple's situation as arguidos in the enquiry into Maddie's disappearance than in the business of the parliament. They requested the creation of a dedicated telephone number to notify a disappearance. A number which has existed since last year: 116000

Faute d’avoir convaincu les membres du parlement, les McCann ont réussi celui qui semblait être leur objectif principal, revenir en force sur les pages des journaux grâce à une conférence de presse ou Clarence Mitchell (voir vidéo) à une fois de plus démontré ses énormes qualités de maître dans l’art de la communication (lire l’envers du décor).

Having failed to convince the members of the parliament, the McCanns succeeded in what seemed to be their main objective, a strong return to the pages of newspapers thanks to the press conference or Clarence Mitchell (see the video) once again showing his significant qualities as master in the art of communication.
