Daily Mail: Madeleine special investigation? Not by the Mail it seems!

Daily Mail caption: "Focused: Gerry and Kate McCann are as committed as ever to finding their daughter Madeleine"

Well, yes, they do look rather focused...on something...but this photo, to my knowledge, first appeared in September 2007, as published here on September 14th.
I wonder why the Daily Mail couldn't have found a more up-to-date photo, perhaps one of Kate and Gerry searching...in Rothley?


The above is the formal family photo published by the McCanns soon after Madeleine disappeared. How old would you say Madeleine was at the time? Well, she is 20 months older than the twins, who look, shall we say, about 6 months old in the photo? So, that would make Madeleine 2 years and two months in the photo.

Now, if Madeleine was about two years and two months in the family photo above, surely the child being held by great-aunt Nora is not celebrating her second birthday! I look at the cake in the photo, and seeing pink and blue icing intertwined, it rather looks to me like it's the twins' birthday cake.
According to the Mail's info, the Madeleine in the family photo above would have been two months (at least) older than the Madeleine in the birthday photo.

Go on! Compare those two photos! If the Maddie in the family photo is at least 2 years and two months, can the Maddie in the birthday cake photo be 2 months younger?

I wonder why the Mail couldn't get its information right? They have headed their feature, "Madeleine special investigation," but that's rather ironic, in my opinion, since they don't seem to have done a great deal of investigating to get their own facts right.

Given that the Daily Mail has probably just searched its archives for a few photos, and by the looks of it made a few little errors, what do you think the text?

It seems to have been all quiet in Praia da Luz when the article was written; no searching going on. However, it's nearly a year since Madeleine disappeared. In the first few hours after her disappearance, hundreds of people were out searching. Some local people took a week off work to search. Did Kate join in? Not according to an interview with the BBC's Jane Hill. So, why should the Daily Mail's reporter be surprised or concerned that nearly a year on, there is no searching going on and very few posters?

If the Mail's reporter perhaps thinks that there should be fresh searches in the area, or more posters being put up, why not persuade Kate and Gerry to pop over there, have a good look round, and while they're there, maybe they could co-operate with the reconstruction and answer the questions to which they gave, "No comment," during their interviews in September.

Les informations avancées par Nacho Abad dans l’émission de fait-divers "Ana Rosa" sur la chaine de télévision espagnole Telecinco "ne proviennent pas de la police portugaise ou de Clarence Mitchell", c’est du moins ce qu’affirme un proche du journaliste et de l’équipe responsable du programme, rajoutant que "l’information a été obtenu en Espagne auprès de personnes qui ont un contact régulier avec les McCann".

The report put forward by Nacho Abad in the, "Ana Rosa," programme on the Spanish television channel Telecino, "does not come from the Portuguese police or from Clarence Mitchell," that at least is what is stated by someone close to the journalist and the team responsible for the programme, adding that, "the information was obtained in Spain from people who are in regular contact with the McCanns."

Cette déclaration viens confirmer ce qu’avait déjà été révélé par un des éléments de liaison de la police britannique à Leicester pour qui les prétendues déclarations de Kate McCann, ou elle fait allusion à une conversation avec sa fille Madeleine quelques heures avant sa disparition, "n’ont pas été faites à la Police à aucun moment de l’enquête mais constant d’un document provenant d’une agence de détectives avec qui les parents de Madeleine ont travaillé après sa disparition".

This statement just confirms what has already been revealed by liaison officers for the British police in Leicester, for whom the alleged statements from Kate McCann, in which she alludes to a conversation with her daughter Madeleine a few hours before her disappearance, "were not made to the police at any time during the investigation, but constitute a document originating from a detective agency with which Madeleine's parents worked after her disappearance."

Selon Nacho Abad, dans ses dépositions les McCann auraient déclaré aux enquêteurs que leur fille Madeleine, qui restait habituellement seule dans l’appartement avec les jumeaux, aurait demandé à sa maman pourquoi elle n’avait pas accouru quand elle pleurait le soir du 2 mai : "Pourquoi n'es-tu pas venu quand pleurions-nous hier le soir ? According to Nacho Abad, in their witness statements the McCanns told the investigators that their daughter, who was usually alone in the apartment with the twins, asked her mother why she had not come running when she was crying on the evening of May 2nd: "Why didn't you come when we were crying last night? (....)", Madeleine is quoted as asking.

Le programme, se basant sur les prétendues déclarations des McCann, met l’accent sur un possible enlèvement par une des fenêtres de l’appartement mais cette version des faits est contestée depuis le premier jour par John Hill, le directeur de l’Océan Club. Selon ce responsable, aucune fenêtre de l’appartement n’a été fracturée, forcé ou cassé.

The programme, based on statements claimed to be from the McCanns, places emphasis on a possible abduction via one of the windows of the apartment, but this version of events has been contested since the first day by John Hill, director of the Ocean Club. Pour les enquêteurs, la question de la fenêtre ne se pose même plus car toutes les expertises réalisées, aussi bien portugaises que britanniques, ont conclu qu’il n’y avait pas eu effraction dans aucune des fenêtres. Une conclusion soutenu par le professeur David Barclay, un des plus grands experts du Royaume-Uni.

Information mise à profit pour mettre en cause la police et le retour des McCann à Praia da Luz.

L’information divulguée par le journaliste espagnol Nacho Abad n’est pas passé inaperçue vu le moment choisie : trois inspecteurs de la Police Judiciaire étaient à Enderby occupés avec l’interrogatoire de plusieurs témoins importants, et les McCann avaient fait le déplacement à Bruxelles pour y visiter le Parlement Européen et s’associer à une déclaration écrite appelant à la création d’un système d’alerte européen pour les cas d’enlèvement d’enfants.

The information divulged by the Spanish journalist, Nacho Abad did not go unnoticed, given the timing: three PJ inspectors were in Enderby, involved with the interrogations of several important witnesses, and the McCanns had gone to Brussels to visit the European Parliament to associate themselves with a written declaration calling for the creation of a European alert system for cases of abducted children.

Fourniret trial: Fabienne and Jeanne-Marie may also have been violated post-mortem

This is a continuation of the previous post concerning the case of Natacha Danais. I decided to post this Enfants Kidnappés article in two parts because it is very long and also because the details coming out at this trial are truly sickening. Writing up the trial reports has taken me to a place where I ponder the nature of evil. Does evil exist as a an energy or a force? For that matter, does goodness?

I do not believe that a person's soul can be evil. Yes, I do have a fundamental belief in the human soul and a belief that that soul is by its nature utterly pure. So, can I say that a person is evil or just that their actions or behaviour is evil? I think that what I come to is an idea that something is missing or distorted at the level of the person's emotional and mental processes. Genetic? I don't know and I am sure that most reputable scientists would hesitate to reach a conclusion on the subject. What I do think is that some people seem to become so poisoned at an emotional and mental level that what I would call the positive human emotions are absent or buried under so much toxicity that they hardly exist.

Michel Fourniret has brought evil into the courtroom in Charleville-Mézières. His odious presence there seems to be like a channel through which something awful flows through. If there is such a thing as, "pure evil," then there is something about Michel Fourniret, which has allowed him, as a person, to become a living conduit for it. At least, while he is in the hands of the judiciary, he is removed from perpetrating any further evil acts on young women and their families.

Dans le cas de Natacha, deux éléments renforcent la suspicion. Primo, le médecin légiste a constaté en certains endroits intimes du petit corps (1,48m...), des traces suspectes. Le Pr Rodat émet deux hypothèses : l'utilisation de tampons hygiéniques, ou une pénétration « alors que la victime n'était plus vivante ». La mère de Natacha est interrogée par Me Sabine Barz, conseil de la famille. Elle est formelle : « Natacha n'avait eu ses règles que deux fois, et elle utilisait des serviettes. Je le sais parce que c'est moi qui les achetais ».
Secundo : lors de l'instruction, Michel Fourniret a déclaré qu'avant d'abandonner le cadavre sur une dune vendéenne, il a pris soin de le baigner dans l'océan pour éliminer les traces de souillure. Auparavant, il avait poignardé sa proie à trois reprises, avec un outil quelconque. Puis, comme la fillette se débattait encore, il l'avait étouffée en plaquant contre sa bouche et son nez l'une de ses « grosses paluches », comme dirait Me Didier Seban.

In the case of Natacha, two pieces of evidence reinforce suspicion. Firstly, the coroner found suspicious traces in certain intimate areas of the little body (1.48m) . Dr Rodat poses two hypotheses: the use of sanitary tampons, or a penetration, "while the victim was no longer living." Natacha's mother was questioned by Me Sabine Barz, lawyer for the family. She is definite. "Natacha had only had two periods, and she used towels. I know because it was I who bought them."
Secondly, during the indictment, Michel Fourniret stated that before he left the body on a Vendée dune, he took care to bathe it in the ocean to eliminate traces of soiling. Previously, he had stabbed his victim three times, with some tool or other. Then, when the little girl still struggled, he had suffocated her by placing one of his, "huge hands," over her mouth and her nose, as related by Me Didier Seban.

Pourquoi la tentation de transformer certains criminels en créatures surnaturelles est-elle si forte qu'elle contamine même des magistrats ? La justice est-elle faite pour amplifier la voix de la meute qui gronde aux marches du palais ? L'audience se poursuit avec des questions adressées à Monique Olivier, laquelle, au bâtonnier Dupuis, affirme, pleine d'aplomb, qu'entre elle et son mari, « il n'y a jamais eu de pacte

It is at this moment that several people leave the room, sickened. Michel Fourniret, for so many, is not a monster. he is much worse than that: a wasted man, who manufactures a production line of odious acts, images, words and silences. A sort of film that can only be developed as a negative. Why is the temptation to transform certain criminals into supernatural creatures so strong that it affects even judges? Is justice made to amplify the voice of the mob that roars at the steps of the courthouse? The hearing continues with questions addressed to Monique Olivier, who, full of self-assurance, states to the president of the bar, that between her and her husband, "There was never a pact."

The young attorney general, Xavier Lenoir, assistant at the public ministry, tamer of the, "monster," then makes a sharp intervention, taking the indictment back to its proper level. To Monique Olivier, who repeats angrily that she was terrified of M. Fourniret: "On June 24th 1991, you write to him, while he has been in prison since the previous day in Verdun for another assault. Monique Olivier, wife and alleged accomplice of Michel Fourniret, repeated on Thursday that, "fear," of her husband had prevented her from denouncing him between 1987 and 2003, in spite of a letter from 1991, read before the Ardennes Court of Assizes, in which she pledges her commitment to him.

"J'avais peur de lui, en tout et pour tout", a répété Monique Olivier aux avocats des parties civiles qui se sont relayés pour la questionner sur son absence de réaction lors du meurtre de Natacha Danais, le cinquième des sept jugés à Charleville-Mézières et que Michel Fourniret a reconnu. "Je n'étais pas capable de lui dire quoi que ce soit. Sachant ce qu'il était capable de faire, j'avais peur", a ajouté l'accusée jugée pour complicité dans plusieurs dossiers. Depuis mercredi, la cour examine le meurtre de Natacha, une adolescente de 13 ans, enlevée sur un parking de supermarché le 21 novembre 1990. Son corps avait été découvert trois jours après sa disparition sur une plage en Vendée.

"I was not capable of telling him anything. Knowing what he was capable of doing, I was afraid." added the accused, on trial for complicity in several cases. Since Wednesday, the court has been examining the murder of Natacha, a 13 year-old teenager, abducted on a supermarket car park on November 21st 1990. her body had been discovered three days after her disappearance on a Vendée beach.

Cela n'empêche pas de vivre avec la peur", s'est-elle justifiée à nouveau à l'audience. Le meurtre de Natacha Danais est le dernier des dossiers examinés par la cour -sur les dix jugés- dans lequel est impliquée l'épouse du tueur en série présumé.

In an extract from the letter, read before the court by the prosecutor's deputy, Xavier Lenoir, Monique Olivier pledges, again, her commitment to her husband. "I hope that you will be freed very quickly (....) You know that you are a very endearing little jailbird. And you know that I am clingy," she wrote in June 1991 to her husband while he was in prison for acts of aggression and violence. "The fear is, all the same, there. Nevertheless, I live with the fear," she again justified herself to the court. The murder of Natacha Danais is the last of the cases being examined by the court - of the ten being tried - in which she is implicated, the wife of the alleged serial killer.

Le 11 mars il a été mis en examen pour ce meurtre qu'il a toujours nié. Roger Parrish et Pauline Sewell étaient présents à l'audience mercredi et jeudi pour l'examen du dossier Danais. L'accusé a invoqué un défaut de "mémoire" et nié une confusion entre les meurtres de Natacha et Joanna, pour expliquer une contradiction dans une déposition où il disait avoir entièrement dévêtu Natacha. Le corps de celle-ci a été retrouvé à moitié déshabillé, celui de Joanna l'était entièrement.

In the afternoon, Michel Fourniret made an, "exemption," to his resolution of silence by trying to directly address the parents of Joanna Parrish, a British woman aged 20, killed in May 1990 near Auxerre. On March 11th he was placed under investigation for this murder which he has always denied. Roger Parrish and Pauline Sewell were present at the hearing on Wednesday and thursday for the examination of the Danais case. The accused claimed a, "memory," failure and denied a confusion between the murders of Natacha and Joanna, to explain a contradiction in a statement where he said he had completely undressed Natacha. Her body had been found half-undressed, that of Joanna completely.

Enfants Kidnappés: the McCanns' holiday apartment is to be re-let.

L'appartement sera à nouveau loué.

La propriétaire de l'appartement, d'où Madeleine a disparu au Portugal, veut le louer. Ruth McCann, la propriétaire de l'appartement 5a à Praia Da Luz, souhaite remettre en location la propriété de l'Ocean Club. Les revenus, bien légitime, de la location de l'appartement aux touristes, voulant séjourner à Praia Da Luz, s'élèvent à £ 19500 par an. L'appartement composé de deux pièces, est vide depuis le mois d'août. Le manque à gagner est indéniable. Toutefois, cette remise en location ne pourrait se faire avant le mois de juin. Selon certaines sources au Portugal, ce serait dû au fait que la PJ a encore besoin de l'appartement lors de la reconstitution prévue au mois de mai.

Mais Fourniret a le don terrifiant de se montrer persuasif. Il demande à la collégienne l'adresse d'un médecin et elle grimpe dans la fourgonnette, signant son arrêt de mort.

Il a fallu attendre ses aveux de juin 2004 pour connaître la vérité sur le martyre de Natacha. De la petite victime, son frère a écrit : « Son coeur commençait tout juste à battre pour un garçon de son âge, et c'est l'horreur qui l'attendait. » La même horreur attendra d'autres jeunes filles encore.

Natacha could have been saved," insists Me Didier Seban. But the accused kept silent for many years, protecting herself and her own crimes. It took until her confessions in June 2004 to learn the truth about Natacha's torture. Of the little victim, her brother wrote: "Her heart had only just started beating for a boy of her age, and this is the horror which was waiting for her." For her part, Monique Olivier related how her husband had told her about, "having marked someone out," while they were in a supermarket car park in Rezé (Loire-Atlantique) where the couple had stopped while returning to the Ardennes. The previous day, they had been convicted by the criminal court at Nantes for having burned pictures belonging to André Michaux, Monique Olivier's first husband.

Comme pour ma soeur qui l'a vue monter dans le véhicule, elle porte ce poids depuis 18 ans", a déclaré hors audience Christophe Grelier, le frère de Natacha.

The transcript is very long and is quite sickening. My heart goes out to the families who are sitting through this trial, hearing of the truly horrendous things that happened to their loved ones at the hands of the evil couple, Michel Fourniret and his wife, Monique Olivier. I have absolutely no sympathy for Monique Olivier and give no credence to her snivelling, cowardly excuses for herself.

While Michel Fourniret was defiling the dead body of a little girl, where was she? If women who have been violently abused by men, beaten to within an inch of their lives, can leave, she could have left. If she had been afraid, the police would have arrested her husband immediately on her statement and she would then have been safe. So, no. I do not believe a word of it. She stayed with Michel Fourniret through those long years of killings, rapes and tortures, and only confessed when it looked like the police were onto them.

I hope she gets the same sentence as Fourniret, a whole life sentence. If she gets out of prison, she will have to be protected for the rest of her life. She helped a vile piece of human sewage to take the lives of so many young women, in a truly unthinkable way, and in doing so she has virtually taken the lives of the families of those victims. She does not deserve to have any kind of life in a civilised society. She must never, ever be free.

"I am writing," he had thundered when Me Seban called on him. He refused to stand and to respond: "Because I heard you putting forward rubbish about Estelle Mouzin", he hurled. Cet après-midi, Didier Seban a de nouveau insinué que Michel Fourniret doit confondre les scènes de crimes, et attribuer des détails à d'autres cas non élucidés. Ainsi, l'a-t-il alpagué sur les vêtements de Natacha Danais qu'il a transportée sur une plage de Vendée le 21 novembre 1990, morte étranglée et de deux coups de poinçon au coeur.

This afternoon, Didier Seban again insinuated that Michel Fourniret must be confusing the crime scens, and attributing details to other outstanding cases. Thus, he was caught out about the clothing of Natacha Danais, killed by strangulation and two stab wounds to the heart, whom he had carried onto the beach at Vendée on November 21st 1990.

Dérogation

Me Seban: «Vous n'êtes pas non plus un ennemi, mais un accusé. Quand vous repassez le film, monsieur Fourniret, Natacha est -elle nue ou pas?» L'accusé rompt le ban: «J'ai terminé mon intervention.»

Fourniret announces: "I am going to make an exception to my position of principle. How many years have elapsed between these events (1990) and the telling of the events (2004) ? Many years. My memory, I think, is comparatively good, detailed, precise. Films are not stored badly in my memory. But there are overlays, errors and contradictions. And so, no Monsieur Seban, I am not superman, and my memory is not infallible. I could try to analyse it, but others will be more able to do that. These are only speculations on my part. I will abstain now. These are errors of memory. Point. Contrary to what you may think, Me Seban, you are not an enemy."

Me Seban: "You are not an enemy either, but an accused. When you replay the film. Monsieur Fourniret, Natacha is - she is naked or not?" The accused brings it to a close: "I have finished my contribution."

Incontestablement l'émotion et l'horreur ont mardi matin, atteint leur paroxysme. L'émotion, quand Marie Noëlle Bouzet a poursuivi la lecture des textes qu'elle avait préparés pour l'audience. Mardi matin, elle s'est certes encore adressée à sa fille, elle s'est surtout adressée aux accusés et avec une violence qui a glacé l'assistance : "Monsieur Fourniret, vous êtes un pitoyable bouffon, un imbécile malfaisant. Montrez-moi vos mains, montrez-moi vos mains qui ont écrasé le cou de ma fille. Dans son box, Michel Fourniret reste figé. Et vous, Madame, vous qui lui avez offert Elisabeth, c'est vous le monstre humain.

Undoubtedly, on Tuesday morning the emotion and the horror reached a climax. The emotion, when Marie Noëlle Bouzet continued the reading of the texts she had prepared for the hearing. On Tuesday morning, she indeed addressed her daughter once again, but mostly she addressed the accused and with a force which froze the audience: "M. A défaut d'entendre Fourniret parler à l'audience, ce sont des extraits vidéo de ses auditions, qui ont été présentés.

In these exceptional images, shot in a corner of the offices of Namur's Federal Police, facing the police interrogator André Carpentier, the overweight woman in a forget-me-not blue sweater, shrinks in her chair, runs her hand over her face, lowers her head, hesitates to respond about her complicity, then talks at full speed: "Since he had told me that I was his accomplice, I could no longer step back, I was obliged to follow, I followed." She waves her right arm, hisses: "That, that would annoy him to see that I agreed." She gets worked up: "But afterwards, people will come to consider me the wife of Dutroux if I say that I helped to do this kind of thing."

Alors vous partez… Qui est dans la voiture ?» Au bout d'une heure de longs silences et de réticences, Monique Olivier finit par avouer la présence de leur fils de 15 mois : «Sélim était là avec nous.» Questionnée sur son rôle, la femme tremblante se déclare «complice forcée» : «Il m'a tenue avec une première affaire, il m'a piégée. C'est trop tard. J'aurais dû avoir le courage de le dénoncer, j'ai été lâche.» La petite blonde à l'allure de «danseuse classique» qu'il a embarquée sous prétexte de chercher un médecin pour son bébé empoignait les sièges et suppliait «Madame, aidez-moi». Monique Olivier n'a pas eu un geste : «J'ai été lâche, je ne l'ai pas aidée.»

The policeman calms her, "Hush, hush, we want the truth, Then you leave....who is in the car?" At the end of an hour of reticence and long silences, Monique Olivier finishes by admitting the presence of her 15 month-old son: "Sélim was there with us." Questioned about her role, the trembling woman declares herself, "forced accomplice.": "He drew me in with the first case, he trapped me. It is too late. The little blonde with the air of a, "classical dancer," whom she had taken into her car, under the pretext of looking for a doctor for her baby, gripped the seats and begged, "Madame, help me." Dans le même angle de pièce, sous le même angle de prise de vue, face au même policier, Michel Fourniret, en sweat à capuche bleu roi se tient les jambes allongées, bras croisés ou mains jointes, et raconte d'un ton détaché comment, au volant de sa Renault 9, il a «remarqué instinctivement une silhouette» de très jeune fille rentrer dans une maison, puis a planqué devant un potager plus de trois heures.

Detached tone. In the same position, with the same camera angle, facing the same policeman, Michel Fourniret, in a hooded blue sweatshirt, sits with legs stretched out, arms crossed or hands clasped, and recounts in a detached tone how, at the wheel of his Renault 9, he, "instinctively noticed a figure," of a very young girl going into a house, then he hid in front of a vegetable garden for more than three hours.

Monique Olivier patiente dans la voiture avec son bébé, «sans avoir droit au chapitre avec juste le droit de la boucler», dit Fourniret : «Tu restes là, tu attends, tu n'as pas d'autre choix.» Et si son épouse l'avait dénoncé avant ? «Si elle s'avisait de prendre une telle initiative, je lui avais fait comprendre : "Je tue Sélim, je te tue et je signale votre disparition."»

Monique Olivier, waiting in the car with her baby, "without the right to have a say, with just the right to stay put," says Fourniret: "You stay there, you wait, you have no other choice." And if his wife had denounced him before ? "If she would have decided to take such an initiative, I had made her understand: "I kill Sélim, I kill you and I notify your disappearance."

Le Michel Fourniret du box se regarde sur l'écran, impassible, conter sa «quête de la virginité» et sa déception lorsque la petite fille, transformée «en loque», se crispe : «Au Sautou [l'ancienne propriété de Fourniret, dans les Ardennes, ndlr], ce n'est pas le symbole de la virginité que j'ai devant moi mais un être humain d'aspect pathétique, ça m'a désarmé.» Le policier demande si «les petites filles doivent mourir pour ça ?» Fourniret répond, l'air sincère : «Monique Olivier a bien fait [de tout révéler] car je me demande s'il y aurait eu une fin. C'est un immense gâchis. Les gens ne sont pas de faïence et de porcelaine, on ne peut pas réparer.»

The Michel Fourniret in the box, watches himself on the screen, impassively relate his, "quest for virginity," and his deception while the little girl, transformed, "into a wreck," tenses up: "At Sautou [the former Fourniret property in the Ardennes] this is not the symbol of virginity which I have in front of me, but a pathetic-looking human being, that put me off." The policeman askes if, "little girls must die for that?" Fourniret replies, sincerely: "Monique Olivier was right [to reveal everything] because I wonder if there would have been an end to it. It was a huge mess. People are not earthenware or porcelain, they cannot be repaired."

Fourniret pleure deux fois.... On le voit pleurer deux fois sur la vidéo, à propos de la mort de sa sœur et de la «Vierge Marie». Michel Fourniret explique aussi le «processus» immuable qui le conduit à capturer des petites filles pures qu'il ne parvient pas à prendre par la force. Il aimerait qu'elles soient soumises et se donnent à lui. Il avait ainsi sussuré à Elisabeth Brichet : «Avec moi, tu vas découvrir quelque chose de bien» ; «Je pensais parvenir par une douce persuasion à ce que cette petite m'offre sa virginité.»

Fourniret cries twice... We see him cry twice on the video, about the death of his sister and the, "Virgin Mary." Plongé dans le désarroi, Michel Fourniret tient son visage entre ses mains et finit par lâcher d'un souffle : «Pour des raisons qui m'échappent.» Il se ressaisit et analyse : «A partir du moment où la personne exprime sa désapprobation ou sa résistance, ça devient un combat, vous n'êtes plus vous-même mais un combattant qui a pour mission de prendre le dessus sur son partenaire. Et puis la nécessité apparaît de faire taire Elisabeth et de faire taire ce regard. Vos mains serrent.» Ensuite, il faut la cacher dans un congélateur et creuser la terre du château : «L'être qui me faisait face est parti. Je me retrouve donc seul face au technicien que je suis. C'est le côté rationnel qui s'exprime avec l'enchaînement de l'organisation.».

A fighter on a mission. The policeman asks him: "Why do you kill them?" Long silence. Plunged into disarray, Michel Fourniret holds his face in his hands and finishes by heaving a sigh: "For reasons which escape me." He pulls himself together and analyses: "From the moment a person expresses their disapproval of their resistance, it becomes a battle. you are not yourself but a fighter whose mission is to gain the upper hand over his partner. And then the need arises to silence Elisabeth and to silence that look. Your hands shake. Then we have to hide her in a freezer and excavate the soil of the chateau:" "The being who showed me her face is gone. I find myself alone then, facing the technician that I am. It is the rational side which expresses itself in the structure of organisation."

D'autres extraits vidéo* Auparavant, la cour a visionné trois extraits de cinq minutes, tirés d'une vidéo réalisée lors d'aveux de Monique Olivier recueillis par la police belge le 30 juin 2004. Sur cette vidéo, elle finit par avouer sa présence et celle de Sélim, alors âgé d'un an, dans la voiture lors de l'enlèvement de l'adolescente. D'une voix assurée, l'ancienne garde-malade reconnaît avoir été "complice, mais complice forcée" de son mari. "J'aurais dû avoir le courage d'aller le dénoncer (...) plutôt que de me taire", ajoute-t-elle. Les deux accusés sont restés impassibles pendant la diffusion de la vidéo. En Belgique, la loi du 2 août 2002 permet de filmer les interrogatoires de suspects sur autorisation du juge d'instruction. Les extraits diffusés mardi sont considérés comme élément du dossier et non pièce à conviction. Depuis l'ouverture du procès le 27 mars, Michel Fourniret, jugé pour sept meurtres aggravés et Monique Olivier pour complicité, refuse de s'exprimer sur les faits faute de huis clos.

Other video extracts. Previously, the court viewed three extracts of five minutes, taken from a video filmed during Monique Olivier's confessions, recorded by the Belgian police on June 30th 2004. On that video, she finished by admitting her presence and that of Sélim, then aged one year, in the car during the teenager's abduction. In a confident voice, the former nurse acknowledges having been, "an accomplice, but a forced accomplice," of her husband. "I should have had the courage to denounce him (....) rather than keep quiet," she added. The two accused remained impassive during the showing of the video. In Belgium, August 2nd 2002, the law allows the filming of interrogations of suspects on the authorisation of the presiding judge. The extracts shown on Tuesday are considered as evidence in the case and not exhibits. Since the opening of the case on March 27th, Michel Fourniret, on trial for seven aggravated murders and Monique Olivier for complicity, refuses to speak for himself about the facts without the proceedings being held in camera.
