It seems that since the disappearance of Madeleine McCann there has been some confusion about the child care services available at the Mark Warner Ocean Club in Praia da Luz. We knew that there was an evening crèche, where parents could leave their children while they dined and that there was also a baby-sitting service available at an additional charge, staffed by the nannies who worked in the daytime crèche. The confusion, at least for me, arose because I was sure that the McCanns and their friends had said they organised their own listening service because it was superior to that offered by the Mark Warner company. Perhaps the McCanns meant that it was superior to no service offered, since the MW company has not offered such a service at the Ocean Club.

The reference to Mark Warner in the new ITV documentary, created by the PR machine that surrounds Kate and Gerry McCann to mark the first anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance is seen by several employees and managers of the Ocean Club as a little revenge by the couple towards those within the Praia da Luz unit who could have co-operated with the Portuguese police.

Contactés à Praia da Luz et au Royaume-Uni, plusieurs employés qui ont côtoyée le couple pendant leur séjour dans le complexe touristique, n’ont pas apprécié les prétendues déclarations de la maman de Madeleine pendant le documentaire, révélés aujourd’hui par une "fuite d’information bien ciblé", et ont réagi accusant le couple de connaître, avant même leur arrivée à l’Océan Club, les services mis à disposition pour les enfants.

Contacted in Praia da Luz and in the UK, several employees who dealt with the couple during their stay at the tourist complex, have not appreciated the claims stated by Madeleine's mother during the documentary, revealed today by a "well-targeted information leak," and have reacted, accusing the couple of knowing, before even arriving at the Ocean Club, the services which were available for children.

"Les McCann et leur groupe savaient qu'il n'y avait pas de service d'écoute d'enfants. Même si ce service était disponible, il ne remplace jamais la présence et la surveillance d’un adulte, " conclu un responsable.

"The McCanns and their group knew that there was no child-listening service. Even if this service were available, it never replaces the presence and supervision of an adult," an officer concluded.

"Ils avaient déjà séjournée dans un autre complexe de la Mark Warner et savaient très bien ce qu’est mis à leur disposition, il y à toujours un service de garderie du soir et des baby-sitters," affirme le même responsable soulignant que "les McCann ont toujours refusé ces services".

"They had already stayed at another Mark Warner complex and knew very well what was available, there is always a minding service in the evening and baby-sitters," the same officer affirmed, stressing that, "the McCanns always refused these services."

Alex Woolfall, porte-parole de Mark Warner Ltd, à confirmé que l’Océan Club n’a jamais disposé de ce genre de service et que cette information est même "écrite dans les brochures" de promotion.

The company Mark Warner LTD had taken over running of the Ocean Club a few months before Madeleine's disappearance, applying to the site the same principles of management which had made them successful with an almost exclusively British clientèle.

Unfortunately, Madeleine McCann is the second child to disappear from a resort belonging to the group; a few years ago another child, also British, disappeared from a tourist complex in Greece, without ever having been found.

Parmi les innombrables pistes suivis initialement par la police ont trouve celle d’un possible lien entre les deux affaires de disparition mais, après avoir vérifié plusieurs détails, notamment comparée la liste de clients et celle du personnel, force à été de conclure qu’il n’y avait pas de liaison possible.

Amongst the countless leads initially followed by the police, was a possible link between the two cases of disappearance, but after having checked several details, notably comparing the client and staff lists, it was concluded that there was no possible link.

Tout comme l’avait fait l’inspecteur Gonçalo Amaral avant d’être écarté, Paulo Rebelo ne pers pas de vue le staff de l’Océan Club et aujourd’hui, même si toutes les possibilités concernant le resort de Mark Warner avaient été évalués, les révélations de la journaliste Imogen Willcocks, ont amené les investigateurs à vérifier si les responsables de la compagnie à Praia da Luz ont tout dit.

Just as Inspector Goncalo Amaral had done before being dismissed, Paulo Rebelo does not lose sight of the staff of the Ocean Club and now, even if every possibility concerning the Mark Warner resort had been assessed, the revelations of the journalist Imogen Willcocks, have led the investigators to check if the managers of the company in Praia da Luz have told everything.

Une bonne d’enfants de la Mark Warner à avoué à la journaliste que le soir venu, certains parents avaient l’habitude de laisser les enfants au lit laissant au personnel du resort le soin de passer tous les 30 minutes pour vérifier la sécurité, mais cette mesure était inadéquate car ils n’avaient pas la possibilité d’avoir accès à l’intérieur de l’appartement. Selon la journaliste, une gamine de moins de 5 ans avait même réussi à sortir par la fenêtre de sa chambre, ayant été retrouvé plus tard perdue à quelques mètres de la piscine.

Willcocks, a young journalist with no experience in the subject of children, succeeded without any difficulty to get herself engaged in the day-care centre of a Mark Warner resort where she had to face situations worthy of the worst nightmares of a professional in the safety and well-being of very young children, without the minimum of preliminary training. A Mark Warner children's nanny confessed to the journalist that come the evening, sertain parents had the habit of leaving their children in bed, leaving the resort's staff the worry of going round every 30 minutes to check their safety, but that system was inadequate because it was not possible for them to enter the apartments. According to the journalist, a small child under five years old, had even managed to get out through the window of her room, having been found later a few metres from the swimming pool.

Plus récemment, en France, une deuxième journaliste britannique s’est fait engager dans le resort de Mark Warner à La Plagne, en Savoie, afin de vérifier si les consignes de sécurité de la compagnie avaient été affectées par la disparition de Madeleine. Selon la journaliste, rien n’a changé et elle avait même réussi à commencer son travail sans que ses références ou son casier judiciaire soit vérifié.

More recently in France, a second British journalisy got herself engaged in the Mark Warner resort at Las Plagne, in Savoie, inorder to check if the company's security measures had been affected by Madeleine's disappearance. According to the journalist, nothing has changed and she had even succeeded in starting work without her references or her police check being done.

Elle se montre plus proche de l’idée que les gens ont d’une maman qui à perdu un enfant."

Selon le même expert, "la présence des McCann face aux cameras d’ITV fait partie d’une campagne mieux préparé et orchestré. "

"I suppose they have learned the lesson of their past mistakes, at least where their image is concerned," states an expert in communication and media at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, for whom, "the public wanted a mother who cries, Kate did. The British television channel ITV, is showing next Wednesday at 8pm, a two-hour documentary which claims to mark the first anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, still arguidos in the enquiry into their daughter's disappearance, have been accompanied by a television team during their travels, notably to Brussels, where the couple went to associate their name with the presentation of a written statement calling for the creation of a European alert systen for cases of child abduction.

Enfants Kidnappés: healing is virtually impossible for Joëlle Parfondry

Since being violently assaulted in 1995 by Michel Foruniret, Joëlle Parfondry has suffered from an extremely serious post-traumatic stress disorder. On Tuesday, the Ardennes Court of Assizes heard that she has also suffered from, "survivor's guilt," having survived Fourniret's attack, while others have been killed. My heart goes out to her as she faces the monster who has caused these years of pain and suffering, who sits there in the court, mute, too cowardly to open his mouth and give some kind of explanation for his vile actions.

Agressée en 1995 dans son salon de toilettage pour chiens à Jambes, Joëlle Parfondry souffrait toujours en 2006 d'une "névrose post-traumatique gravissime" avec des réminiscences de la scène traumatique, ce qui est rare aussi longtemps après les faits, a dit le Dr Anne Breton devant la cour d'assises des Ardennes.

Healing is virtually impossible for Joëlle Parfondry.

A psychiatrist who examined Joëlle Parfondry in 2006 on behalf of the French police, gave evidence on Tuesday about the deep trauma of this victim of Michel Fourniret, now aged 37 and revealed that her healing was virtually impossible. Assaulted in 1995 in her dog-grooming salon, Joëlle Parfondry was still suffering in 2006 from an, "extremely serious post-traumatice stress disorder," with memories of the traumatic scene, which is rare so long after the events, Dr Anne Breton said before the Ardennes Court of Assizes.

Joëlle Parfondry a un sentiment confus de culpabilité et de honte. Quand elle a appris, en 2004, que son agresseur était Michel Fourniret et qu'il avait tué d'autres jeunes filles, elle a pris "à son compte la douleur des familles de ces victimes". "Elle a intériorisé la douleur des autres. Elle a un sentiment de culpabilité d'être encore en vie", a poursuivi la psychiatre. Elle a fait état de "troubles psychiatriques sévères et très inquiétants".

Joëlle Parfondry has confused feelings of guilt and shame. When she learned in 2004, that her attacker was Michel Fourniret and that he had killed other young girls, she took, "onto herself the suffering of the families and the victims." Twelve minutes, give or take a few seconds, is never sufficient in a trial where the accused remains silent. Also, there was this total blanket of silence in which the Ardennes Court of Assizes, on Tuesday, viewed the informative extract of a filmed interview with Michel Fourniret, who was decidedly more vocal under the eye of the camera than under that of his judges. Recorded on July 15th 2004, in the Namur police station, the scene is like an analysis: one made by Michel Fourniret of his, "hunt for virgins," a wild quest for a fantasy grail.

Sur cette bande-vidéo, l'enquêteur apparaît de dos, le suspect de face. Assis dans l'angle d'une pièce aux murs gris, l'Ardennais au pull bleu électrique se tourne les pouces. C'est après le mariage [avec Monique Olivier, NDLR] que ça a pris des proportions…»«Déçu» et «frustré» de n'avoir pu lui-même déflorer son épouse, Michel Fourniret aurait alors vécu «hanté…, hanté…, hanté…» par l'envie de «posséder un symbole». Pourtant, admet-il, «ce n'est pas si simple». Un peu perdu, le policier belge en convient et tend l'oreille de plus belle. «Il y a une certitude, reconnaît Michel Fourniret, c'est l'inanité de cette quête.»

And relates, "Previously, I had never had any problems. I had no need to assault anyone to take her virginity. It was after the marriage [with Monique Olivier NDLR] that it attained those proportions...."Disappointed," and, "frustrated," of never having been able to deflower his wife, Michel Fourniret would then have lived, "haunted...haunted...haunted," by the desire to, "possess a symbol." However, he admits, "this is not so simple." A little lost, the Belgian police officer agrees and listens very carefully. "There is a certainty," Michel Fourniret acknowledges, "it is the futility of that quest."

Habilement lancé sur la voie des aveux, l'enquêteur demande alors à Fourniret si celui-ci a déjà éprouvé le besoin d'immortaliser par la photo ou la vidéo ses passages à l'acte. Réponse négative. «C'est dans ma tête. […] C'est quelque chose de trop secret», confie-t-il, non sans avoir jeté l'opprobre sur «la perversité et la vulgarité des gens qui recourent à ce genre de moyens».

A body to possess.

Adding, "to perforate that membrane," in order to, "experience meeting with that symbol." Well on the way to the confessions, the investgator then asks Fourniret if he had felt the need to immortalise in photos or on video, the scenes of the events. Negative response. "It is in my head. [...} It is something very secret," he confides, not without having heaped shame on, "the depravity and vulgarity of people who resort to such methods."

Pour lui, pas question de «voyeurisme» ; même «une pellicule ne serait pas digne d'emmagasiner ça». Aussi Michel Fourniret préfère-t-il compter sur sa «détermination», conscient de n'être pas du genre à «faire les choses à moitié». Reste que son funeste face-à-face avec la petite Élisabeth Brichet l'aurait, dit-il, «désarmé». «On ne peut pas vouloir une partie du corps de quelqu'un, et uniquement une partie. Il y a le visage, aussi.» Onze minutes ont passé. À l'image, Michel Fourniret se gratte le crâne, soupire, se mouche, pleure. Dans le box, son double vivant a, par moments, gardé la tête tournée vers l'écran. Un détail qui n'aura pas échappé aux parties civiles, mais que l'accusé réfute. «Mentalement, j'avais les yeux fermés», soutient-il. Puis, avec un calme et une lenteur défiant toute concurrence, Michel Fourniret coupe son micro. Et reprend sa place de mutique.

Il assiste à toutes les audiences depuis le début du procès des époux Fourniret, le 27 mars dernier, en solidarité avec les autres familles touchées. Jean-Pierre Saison, le père d'une des victimes présumées de Michel Fourniret, confie à 20minutes.fr ses attentes sur ce procès douloureux. L'affaire de sa fille, Céline Saison, est examinée mercredi et jeudi.

On the day that Céline disappeared.

He has been present at every hearing since the start of the trial of the Fourniret couple on March 27th, in solidarity with the other affected families. Jean-Pierre Saison, father of one of Michel Fourniret's alleged victims, confided to 20 Minutes, his expectations of this painful trial. The case of his daughter, Céline, is being examined on Wednesday and Thursday.

Pouvez-vous nous décrire le jour où votre fille Céline a disparu?

C'était le mardi 16 mai 2000. Céline avait passé son Bac blanc de philosophie dans l'après-midi, une épreuve qu'elle a dû terminer entre 17h30 et 18h. Je suis rentré à la maison vers cette heure-là et j'ai commencé à tondre la pelouse en l'attendant. Il faisait très chaud, l'air était lourd, orageux. Le temps a passé, 18h15, 18h30, 19h… sans nouvelles de Céline. Ce qui n'était pas dans ses habitudes. C'était quelqu'un de réservé, qui n'avait pas de copain attitré. Elle rentrait toujours à la maison sitôt les cours finis car elle aimait beaucoup rester en famille.

An interview with Sandrine Cochard on 20minutes:

Would you describe for us the day your daughter disappeared?

It was Tuesday May 16th 200. Céline had taken her Bac blanc in philosophy in the afternoon, an exam which finished between 5.30 and 6pm. I returned home at about that time and I started to mow the lawn in the meantime. It was very hot, the air was heavy, thundery. Time went on, 6.15, 6.30, 7pm....with no news of Céline. This was not like her. She was a reserved person who did not have attractive mates. She always came home as soon as classes finished because she very much liked to stay at home with the family.

C'est à ce moment que vous avez commencé à vous inquiéter?

Oui car son lycée était à 800 mètres de notre domicile. Nous sommes tout de suite aller voir là-bas, pour tenter de trouver des élèves qui pourraient nous aider. Mais le lycée était fermé et il n'y avait plus personne. Puis nous avons appelé ses copines de classe, des personnes qui avaient passé l'épreuve avec elle, afin de savoir vers quelle heure elle avait pu quitter la salle, mais personne ne l'avait vue sortir. Nous avons tourné dans la ville, nous nous sommes arrêtés au magasin où elle avait acheté des lentilles de contact de jour même… Sans succès. Un violent orage a éclaté vers 20h. Nous avons alors appelé les hôpitaux avant de nous tourner vers la police, vers 22h30, pour faire une déclaration de disparition. Malheureusement, Céline avait fêté ses 18 ans le mois précédent… Un agent nous a informé qu'il fallait attendre 48h pour bouger. Nous n'avons même pas pu déposer de main courante. J'estime qu'on devrait lancer une procédure de disparition inquiétante sans attendre ce délai, même pour un majeur. Durant cet intervalle, Céline a disparu sans laisser de traces.

Was that when you started to get worried?

Yes, because her school was 800 metres from our house. We went down there to look immediately, to try to find some pupils who could help us. But the school was closed and there was no one there. Then we called her class-mates, the people who had sat the exam with her, in order to know around what time she had left the class, but no one had seen her going out. We went round the town, we stopped at the shop where she had bought contact lenses on the same day...without success. A violent storm broke out towards 8pm. We then called the hospitals before going round to the police, at around 10.30pm, to report a disappearance. Unfortunately, Céline had reached 18 the previous month. An agent informed us that there would have to be a wait of 48 hours before taking action. We were not even able to register and incident. I consider that a worrying disappearance procedure should be launched without this delay, even for an adult. During this interval, Céline disappeared without a trace.

Les recherches de police ont commencé le vendredi mais les chiens pisteurs n'ont pu retrouver son passage à cause de la pluie. Un juge s'est saisi de l'affaire quinze jours plus tard. Le 22 juillet suivant, trois jeunes qui allaient aux champignons ont découvert ses restes dans une forêt, côté belge. La police l'a identifiée grâce à sa montre, retrouvée près du corps, et des analyses ADN ont confirmé que c'était bien Céline.

What happened on the following days?

The next day, the Wednesday, we had been ringing our neighbours in order to find a clue. The police searches started on the Friday but the sniffer dogs could not find where she had gone because of the rain. A judge assessed the case a fortnight later. On July 22nd, three young people who went for mushrooms discovered her remains in a forest, on the Belgian side. The police identified her from her watch, found near the body, and DNA analyses confirmed that it was indeed Céline.

Deux ans plus tard, nous avons pris la décision de quitter la région. On ne pouvait plus vivre dans l'endroit où elle avait vécu, voir la porte de sa chambre toujours fermée, repasser par les endroits où elle était passée... Nous sommes partis dans le sud-ouest, à Tarbes. Un environnement qui nous permet de faire le vide facilement lorsque ça ne va pas, en sortant pour marcher dans la montagne par exemple. En revanche, changer de lieu ne nous a pas permis de tourner la page. Pour moi, le deuil est impossible.

What impact has Céline's disappearance had on your life?

Two years later we took the decision to leave the area. We couldn't live any longer in the place where she had died, seeing her bedroom door always shut, going past the places where she passed....We left for the south-west, to Tarbes. An environment which easily allowed us to create a vaccuum, while that does not work by going out walking in the mountain for example. However, the change of place has not allowed us to turn the page. For me, grief is impossible.

Votre famille a-t-elle résisté à ce drame?

Oui, ma femme et moi nous sommes rapprochés. Quant à notre fils, qui a fêté ses 22 ans lundi, il reste fragile et s'exprime peu. On fait tout pour le protéger mais il reste marqué par cette disparition qui est arrivée alors qu'il avait 14 ans. Nous avons été suivis pendant des mois par une psychologue afin de nous préparer à ce procès, notamment sur la notion de plaisir pris à tuer que pourrait évoquer Michel Fourniret... Mais je ne pense pas qu'il s'exprime.

Has your family stood up to this tragedy?

Yes, my wife and I are closer. As for our son, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Monday, he is still fragile and says very little. We do everything to protect him but he remains affected by this disappearance which happened when he was 14. We have been seen during these months by a psychologist in order to prepare for this trial, notably for the idea of the pleasure taken in killing which Michel Fourniret could have presented.....but I don't think he will speak.

Ce procès est-il un soulagement pour vous?

Oui, car savoir rompt l'attente qui nous rongeait depuis quatre ans. Ce procès est surtout un passage obligé. Je n'attends pas de remords de Michel Fourniret, qui joue un rôle depuis le début du procès, ni de Monique Olivier. Ce procès est très spécifique car nous avons à faire à un couple d'inculpés face à dix familles unies dans la douleur. Nous formons une seule famille de victimes, c'est pourquoi nous assistons à l'examen de toutes les affaires. Je salue le président Gilles Latapie qui a bien compris qu'il fallait ménager les familles car ce procès est une épreuve très lourde, il y a beaucoup d'émotions et de retenue. C'est insupportable, même pour la cour.

Yes, to know an end to the waiting which has been eating into us for four years. This trial is above all something we have to do. I am not expecting remorse from Michel Fourniret, who is playing a role since the start of the trial, neither from Monique Olivier. This trial is very specifically because we have something to do with an accused couple faced with ten families united in their suffering. We form a single family of victims, this is why we are attending the examination of all the cases. I salute the president Gilles Latapie, who has understood the need to spare the families because this trial is a very difficult test, there is a lot of emotion and restraint. It is unbearable even for the court.

Mouvements bancaires passés à la loupe.

Selon une chaîne de télévision portugaise indépendante, TVI, la police judiciaire analyserait les mouvements financiers des parents de Madeleine McCann. La PJ aurait eu accès aux données bancaires du couple leur permettant ainsi d'étudier les achats effectués avant la disparition de Madeleine mais également ceux fait après sa disparition. Ces vérifications ne se limiteraient pas uniquement aux parents de Maddie mais également aux sept amis du couple présent à Praia Da Luz en mai dernier. Selon la même chaîne de télévision, la PJ serait en attente d'autres résultats d'analyses de vestiges biologiques. Ces résultats devraient venir du FFS de Birmingham. La PJ reste discrète quant à ces analyses.

According to the Portuguese independent television channel, TVI, the PJ would analyse the financial transactions of Madeleine McCann's parents. The PJ would have had access to the couple's banking information thus allowing them to study purchases made before Madeleine's disappearance and also those made after her disappearance. These checks would not be limited only to Maddie's parents but also to the seven friends of the couple present in Praia da Luz last May. According to the same television channel, the PJ would be waiting for other results of analyses of biological traces. These results should come from the FSS in Birmingham. The PJ remain discreet about these analyses.

La PJ avait demandé aux parents McCann de revenir à Praia Da Luz en vue de participer à une reconstitution des évènements s'étant déroulés la nuit du 03 mai. Le premier arguido dans cette enquête, Robert Murat, quant à lui, participera bien, et sans condition, à la reconstitution de la soirée du 03 mai. En effet, ce dernier se rend bien compte que la reconstitution pourrait révéler qu'il est.... innocent en fin de compte.

The PJ have asked the McCann parents to go back to Praia da Luz to participate in a reconstruction of the events unfolding on the night of May 3rd. The parents refused to participate in this reconstruction without having the guarantee of not being harassed by the police. However, in many investigations, a reconstruction can reveal lots of things, allowing the investigation to progress. This reconstruction, if it does not lead to Madeleine's being found, at least it will show who did what and when and where. The whole thing allowing the validation, or not, of the abduction theory. And if the abduction theory is not validated by the reconstruction, the parents could then open their eyes and be led to ask the right questions. The first arguido in this investigation, Robert Murat, meanwhile, will participate, and unconditionally, in the reconstruction of the evening of May 3rd. The latter makes himself readily available, counting on the reconstruction to show that he is....innocent in the final reckoning.

According to the Portuguese TV channel TVI, the investigators would like to know the exact nature of payments before and after Madeleine's disappearance.

Clarence Mitchell, the former head of the British government's Media Monitoring Unit, had warned: for the McCanns, the gloves are off in their dealings with the Portuguese authorities, in particular the PJ, responsible for the investigation into the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine.

Yesterday, the Sunday People accused the police of being the source of a, "spiteful," plan to bring Kate McCann to justice for the crime of aggravated negligence. According to this tabloid, quoting Bitish lawyers, to consider that the McCanns are guilty of negligence for having left three children alone and without supervision is, "shameful." As a reminder, the McCanns themselves have admitted leaving Madeleine (aged 3), Sean and Amélie (aged 2) alone and without supervision, on several occasions, in apartment 5A at the Ocean Club.

"Il est prématuré avancer ce genre d’information. Ce n’est qu’après la conclusion de l’enquête de police que le Procureur en charge du dossier prendra sa décision," affirme un responsable du Ministère Public, soulignant que "ce genre d’information ne sert qu’à déstabiliser l’enquête et à créer des justifications pour le manque de collaboration des parents".

Depuis la disparition de Madeleine en mai 2007, d’innombrables voix se sont levés pour demander que Kate et Gerry McCann soient responsabilisés pour avoir laissé seules et sans surveillance les trois enfants du couple. Si au Portugal la question reste en ouvert jusqu’à la conclusion de l’enquête, au Royaume-Uni les services sociaux ont reçu la consigne de ne pas intervenir contre le couple.

Since Madeleine's disappearance in May 2007, countless voices have been raised demanding that Kate and Gerry McCann were held responsible for having left the couple's three children alone and without supervision. If in Portugal the question remains open until the conclusion of the investigation, in the UK social services have receieved the advice not to intervene against the couple.

The new campaign, which seems to want, at all costs, to withdraw all credit from the work of the investigators, does not take account of the involvement of the British police in the investigation or the various pressures exerted by British diplomats.

Contrairement à ce que plusieurs médias ont tenu à souligner, en particulier le Daily Mail et The Mirror, l’enquête à la disparition de Madeleine McCann n’est pas une responsabilité exclusive de la Police Judiciaire (PJ). La nuit même de sa disparition, l’ambassadeur du Royaume-Uni à Lisbonne et le Consul à Algarve (qui ont depuis quitté leurs fonctions) ont demandé que les autorités anglaises puissent participer aux travaux d’investigation. Une requête prestement accepté par le gouvernement portugais, relié par la direction nationale de la PJ qu’à donné une liberté exemplaire aux éléments de la police britannique qui sont arrivés à Praia da Luz le 4 mai.

Contrary to what several media sources have emphasised, in particular the Daily Mail and the Mirror, the investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance is not the exclusive responsibility of the PJ. On the same night as her disappearance, the UK ambassador in Lisbon and the Consul for the Algarve (who have since left their positions) made a request for the English authorities to be able to participate in the work of the investigation. A request readily accepted by the Portuguese government, set up by the national leadership of the PJ who gave total freedom to officers of the British police who arrived in Praia da Luz on May 4th.

The third week of the Fourniret trial will be given over to the examination of the Céline Saison and Joëlle Parfondry cases. Joëlle is in court, reliving the trauma of a savage attack by Fourniret, which left her traumatised.

La 3ième semaine de procès sera consacrée à Joëlle et Céline.*

Elle va pouvoir souffler un peu, Monique Olivier. Plus de questions gênantes sur sa complicité, sur sa participation active ou passive aux faits criminels jugés par la cour d'assises des Ardennes. Les quatre derniers dossiers, qui seront examinés d'ici au 30 avril, ne concernent que Michel Fourniret, même si son épouse était dans le secret de ses expéditions. Chaque soir, en bon mari qui retrace sa journée, il détaillait ses menus travaux, ses pérégrinations et autres occupations, comme le viol et l'assassinat de la jeune Céline Saison ou l'agression sauvage de Joëlle Parfondry, une Belge gravement traumatisée qui sera entendue aujourd'hui .

The third week of the trial will be dedicated to Joëlle and Céline.

Monique Olivier can breath a little. No more embarrassing questions about her complicity, about her active or passive involvement in the criminal events being tried by the Ardennes Court of Assizes. The last four cases, which will be examined from now until April 30th, only concern Michel Fourniret, even if his wife was in on the secret of his expeditions. Each evening, like a good husband, who goes over his day, he would give details of his odd jobs, his travels and other occupations, such as the rape and murder of the young Céline Saison or the savage assault on Joëlle Parfondry, a seriously traumatised Belgian woman, who will be heard today.

Joëlle Parfondry est vivante parce qu'elle a eu la présence d'esprit de mentir : au violeur, elle a crié « je suis enceinte », simulé des douleurs au ventre. Fourniret en a perdu ses moyens. Pourtant, ce 19 janvier 1995, quand il arrive au salon de toilettage pour chiens à Jambes, en Belgique, il est déterminé à faire un sort à la propriétaire : « L'action était préméditée », avouera-t-il, d'où la cagoule sur le visage. Mains liées dans le dos, Joëlle est allongée nue et menacée d'un revolver et d'un couteau à cran d'arrêt. Il l'oblige à le supplier de lui « faire un petit plaisir » mais elle se débat, prétexte une grossesse. Très en colère, il lui met une mandarine dans la bouche pour la faire taire, l'empoigne par la nuque, lui frappe la tête contre le rebord de la douche. Fourniret vole chéquiers, argent et cartes de crédit, puis s'enfuit. Neuf ans après, Monique balance son mari. Joëlle apprend enfin le nom de son bourreau.

Joëlle Parfondry is alive because she had the presence of mind to lie: to the rapist, she shouted, "I am pregnant," and feigned stomach pains. Fourniret went to pieces. yet, on January 19th 1995, when he arrived at the dog grooming salon, in Belgium, he was determined to make short work of the owner: "The action was premeditated," he was to confess, through the hood over his face. Hands tied behind her back, Joëlle lay naked, threatened with a gun and a serrated knife. He forces her to provide him with, "giving a little pleasure," but she struggles, on the pretext of a pregnancy. Very angry, he places a mandarin in her mouth to silence her, grabs her by the neck, hits her head against the edge of the shower. Fourniret steals cheque books, money and credit cards, then he flees. Nine years later, Monique Olivier informs on her husband. Joëlle finally learns the name of her torturer.

Céline Saison, 18 ans, n'a pas eu la chance de déstabiliser Fourniret. Lorsque, le 16 mai 2000, elle quitte le lycée Chanzy de Charleville-Mézières après l'épreuve de philo au bac blanc, l'adolescente croise un automobiliste perdu. Pour l'aider à retrouver son chemin, la serviable Céline monte dans sa fourgonnette. « Sous la menace de l'aveugler avec de l'acide, expliquera le prévenu, je lui ai gentiment demandé de faire l'amour. » Le viol consommé, Céline est étranglée avec de la ficelle. Michel Fourniret rentre à la maison, vide le sac de la jeune Ardennaise, regarde avec Monique les photos du dernier voyage scolaire. Elle brûlera le tout le lendemain. Aux policiers en 2004, l'épouse benoîte dira que « M. Fourniret n'a pas manifesté de remords. Au contraire, il était fier de lui, comme d'habitude. »

Céline Saison, aged 18, didn' have the chance to unsettle Fourniret. On May 16th 2000, when she is leaving the Chanzy de Charleville-Mézières school after a baccalauréat philosophy exam, the teenager comes across a motorist who is lost. To help him find his way, the helpful Céline climbs into his van. "Under the threat of blinding her with acid," the accused would explain, "I asked her kindly to make love." The rape achieved, Céline is strangled with string. Michel Fourniret goes home, empties the young Ardennes girl's bag, with Monique looks at the photos of the last school trip. She would burn everything the following day. To the police officers in 2004, the ingratiating wife was to say, "M. Fourniret showed no remorse. On the contrary, he was proud of himself, as usual."

The families of Michel Fourniret's victims sit in the court and listen to the horrendous details. Joëlle Parfondry will relive the trauma of a violent rape. Yet, these people, whose lives were changed forever, are hearing that to Michel Fourniret and his wife, rape and murder were part of the everyday conversation of the evil pair. Fourniret returned home and related his day: a few odd jobs, a rape and murder. The violent murder of young girls and young women, was just another part of Michel Fourniret's day, to be related along with the odd jobs he did. The suffering of these young people and of their families must have meant absolutely nothing to him. I shall never have a way of understanding such evil lack of humanity.

Daily Mail: Madeleine special investigation? Not by the Mail it seems!

Well, yes, they do look rather focused...on something...but this photo, to my knowledge, first appeared in September 2007, as published here on September 14th.
I wonder why the Daily Mail couldn't have found a more up-to-date photo, perhaps one of Kate and Gerry searching...in Rothley?


The above is the formal family photo published by the McCanns soon after Madeleine disappeared. How old would you say Madeleine was at the time? Well, she is 20 months older than the twins, who look, shall we say, about 6 months old in the photo? So, that would make Madeleine 2 years and two months in the photo.

Now, if Madeleine was about two years and two months in the family photo above, surely the child being held by great-aunt Nora is not celebrating her second birthday! I look at the cake in the photo, and seeing pink and blue icing intertwined, it rather looks to me like it's the twins' birthday cake.
According to the Mail's info, the Madeleine in the family photo above would have been two months (at least) older than the Madeleine in the birthday photo.

Go on! Compare those two photos! If the Maddie in the family photo is at least 2 years and two months, can the Maddie in the birthday cake photo be 2 months younger?

I wonder why the Mail couldn't get its information right? They have headed their feature, "Madeleine special investigation," but that's rather ironic, in my opinion, since they don't seem to have done a great deal of investigating to get their own facts right.

Given that the Daily Mail has probably just searched its archives for a few photos, and by the looks of it made a few little errors, what do you think the text?

It seems to have been all quiet in Praia da Luz when the article was written; no searching going on. However, it's nearly a year since Madeleine disappeared. In the first few hours after her disappearance, hundreds of people were out searching. Some local people took a week off work to search. Did Kate join in? Not according to an interview with the BBC's Jane Hill. So, why should the Daily Mail's reporter be surprised or concerned that nearly a year on, there is no searching going on and very few posters?

If the Mail's reporter perhaps thinks that there should be fresh searches in the area, or more posters being put up, why not persuade Kate and Gerry to pop over there, have a good look round, and while they're there, maybe they could co-operate with the reconstruction and answer the questions to which they gave, "No comment," during their interviews in September.

The report put forward by Nacho Abad in the, "Ana Rosa," programme on the Spanish television channel Telecino, "does not come from the Portuguese police or from Clarence Mitchell," that at least is what is stated by someone close to the journalist and the team responsible for the programme, adding that, "the information was obtained in Spain from people who are in regular contact with the McCanns."

Cette déclaration viens confirmer ce qu’avait déjà été révélé par un des éléments de liaison de la police britannique à Leicester pour qui les prétendues déclarations de Kate McCann, ou elle fait allusion à une conversation avec sa fille Madeleine quelques heures avant sa disparition, "n’ont pas été faites à la Police à aucun moment de l’enquête mais constant d’un document provenant d’une agence de détectives avec qui les parents de Madeleine ont travaillé après sa disparition".

This statement just confirms what has already been revealed by liaison officers for the British police in Leicester, for whom the alleged statements from Kate McCann, in which she alludes to a conversation with her daughter Madeleine a few hours before her disappearance, "were not made to the police at any time during the investigation, but constitute a document originating from a detective agency with which Madeleine's parents worked after her disappearance."

Fourniret trial: Fabienne and Jeanne-Marie may also have been violated post-mortem

This is a continuation of the previous post concerning the case of Natacha Danais. I decided to post this Enfants Kidnappés article in two parts because it is very long and also because the details coming out at this trial are truly sickening. Writing up the trial reports has taken me to a place where I ponder the nature of evil. Does evil exist as a an energy or a force? For that matter, does goodness?

I do not believe that a person's soul can be evil. Yes, I do have a fundamental belief in the human soul and a belief that that soul is by its nature utterly pure. So, can I say that a person is evil or just that their actions or behaviour is evil? I think that what I come to is an idea that something is missing or distorted at the level of the person's emotional and mental processes. Genetic? I don't know and I am sure that most reputable scientists would hesitate to reach a conclusion on the subject. What I do think is that some people seem to become so poisoned at an emotional and mental level that what I would call the positive human emotions are absent or buried under so much toxicity that they hardly exist.

Michel Fourniret has brought evil into the courtroom in Charleville-Mézières. His odious presence there seems to be like a channel through which something awful flows through. If there is such a thing as, "pure evil," then there is something about Michel Fourniret, which has allowed him, as a person, to become a living conduit for it. At least, while he is in the hands of the judiciary, he is removed from perpetrating any further evil acts on young women and their families.

Dans le cas de Natacha, deux éléments renforcent la suspicion. Primo, le médecin légiste a constaté en certains endroits intimes du petit corps (1,48m...), des traces suspectes. Le Pr Rodat émet deux hypothèses : l'utilisation de tampons hygiéniques, ou une pénétration « alors que la victime n'était plus vivante ». La mère de Natacha est interrogée par Me Sabine Barz, conseil de la famille. Elle est formelle : « Natacha n'avait eu ses règles que deux fois, et elle utilisait des serviettes. Je le sais parce que c'est moi qui les achetais ».
Secundo : lors de l'instruction, Michel Fourniret a déclaré qu'avant d'abandonner le cadavre sur une dune vendéenne, il a pris soin de le baigner dans l'océan pour éliminer les traces de souillure. Auparavant, il avait poignardé sa proie à trois reprises, avec un outil quelconque. Puis, comme la fillette se débattait encore, il l'avait étouffée en plaquant contre sa bouche et son nez l'une de ses « grosses paluches », comme dirait Me Didier Seban.

In the case of Natacha, two pieces of evidence reinforce suspicion. Firstly, the coroner found suspicious traces in certain intimate areas of the little body (1.48m) . Dr Rodat poses two hypotheses: the use of sanitary tampons, or a penetration, "while the victim was no longer living." Natacha's mother was questioned by Me Sabine Barz, lawyer for the family. She is definite. "Natacha had only had two periods, and she used towels. I know because it was I who bought them."
Secondly, during the indictment, Michel Fourniret stated that before he left the body on a Vendée dune, he took care to bathe it in the ocean to eliminate traces of soiling. Previously, he had stabbed his victim three times, with some tool or other. Then, when the little girl still struggled, he had suffocated her by placing one of his, "huge hands," over her mouth and her nose, as related by Me Didier Seban.

Pourquoi la tentation de transformer certains criminels en créatures surnaturelles est-elle si forte qu'elle contamine même des magistrats ? La justice est-elle faite pour amplifier la voix de la meute qui gronde aux marches du palais ? L'audience se poursuit avec des questions adressées à Monique Olivier, laquelle, au bâtonnier Dupuis, affirme, pleine d'aplomb, qu'entre elle et son mari, « il n'y a jamais eu de pacte

It is at this moment that several people leave the room, sickened. Michel Fourniret, for so many, is not a monster. he is much worse than that: a wasted man, who manufactures a production line of odious acts, images, words and silences. A sort of film that can only be developed as a negative. Why is the temptation to transform certain criminals into supernatural creatures so strong that it affects even judges? Is justice made to amplify the voice of the mob that roars at the steps of the courthouse? The hearing continues with questions addressed to Monique Olivier, who, full of self-assurance, states to the president of the bar, that between her and her husband, "There was never a pact."

Monique Olivier, wife and alleged accomplice of Michel Fourniret, repeated on Thursday that, "fear," of her husband had prevented her from denouncing him between 1987 and 2003, in spite of a letter from 1991, read before the Ardennes Court of Assizes, in which she pledges her commitment to him.

"J'avais peur de lui, en tout et pour tout", a répété Monique Olivier aux avocats des parties civiles qui se sont relayés pour la questionner sur son absence de réaction lors du meurtre de Natacha Danais, le cinquième des sept jugés à Charleville-Mézières et que Michel Fourniret a reconnu. "Je n'étais pas capable de lui dire quoi que ce soit. Sachant ce qu'il était capable de faire, j'avais peur", a ajouté l'accusée jugée pour complicité dans plusieurs dossiers. Depuis mercredi, la cour examine le meurtre de Natacha, une adolescente de 13 ans, enlevée sur un parking de supermarché le 21 novembre 1990. Son corps avait été découvert trois jours après sa disparition sur une plage en Vendée.

Since Wednesday, the court has been examining the murder of Natacha, a 13 year-old teenager, abducted on a supermarket car park on November 21st 1990. her body had been discovered three days after her disappearance on a Vendée beach.

Et tu sais que je suis collante", écrivait-elle en juin 1991 à son mari alors qu'il était incarcéré pour des faits d'agression et violence. "La peur est quand même là. Cela n'empêche pas de vivre avec la peur", s'est-elle justifiée à nouveau à l'audience. Le meurtre de Natacha Danais est le dernier des dossiers examinés par la cour -sur les dix jugés- dans lequel est impliquée l'épouse du tueur en série présumé.

In an extract from the letter, read before the court by the prosecutor's deputy, Xavier Lenoir, Monique Olivier pledges, again, her commitment to her husband. "I hope that you will be freed very quickly (....) You know that you are a very endearing little jailbird. And you know that I am clingy," she wrote in June 1991 to her husband while he was in prison for acts of aggression and violence. "The fear is, all the same, there. Nevertheless, I live with the fear," she again justified herself to the court. The murder of Natacha Danais is the last of the cases being examined by the court - of the ten being tried - in which she is implicated, the wife of the alleged serial killer.

Réponse cinglante du camp des victimes : c'est non. L'Ardennais, qui avait reconnu n'avoir « pas de grandes révélations à faire », devient livide.

Demande refusée par les parties civiles, finalement «soulagées» d'en finir avec ce procès.

L'accusé a invoqué un défaut de "mémoire" et nié une confusion entre les meurtres de Natacha et Joanna, pour expliquer une contradiction dans une déposition où il disait avoir entièrement dévêtu Natacha. Le corps de celle-ci a été retrouvé à moitié déshabillé, celui de Joanna l'était entièrement.
