The court started to examine the ten cases which are being tried with the one which led to his arrest.

That afternoon, Marie, the little Burundian girl, goes back up the deserted main street of her Belgian village of Ciney. The van stops level with her. Scribbled address in his hand, the driver asks her for directions to a hamlet she knows very well. The ritual method for the killer to capture his future victims. Signé « Le père »."

I congratulate you." In his box, Fourniret still plays the mute. To questions, he invariably responds: "In camera, I will answer you." But his letters speak for him. In 2005, to his son, who asks him about the fate which he reserved for the little Burundian girl, he answers sadistically and with a profusion of details, knowing that his letter will be intercepted: he would have mutilated her, "with infinite enjoyment." Les lettres saisies chez eux qui faisaient allusion à l'aide promise à son mari dans sa quête de jeunes vierges n'étaient que "des paroles". "Ce n'était pas réalisable", selon elle."

Tear out the eyes and the limbs with infinite enjoyment.

In a letter sent to his son, Sélim, in 2005, Michel Fourniret explains, in no uncertain terms, the fate which he was reserving for Marie if she had not fled. "It is evident that I would have torn out her eyes and her limbs with infinite enjoyment," he writes, according to the document cited by M. Nachbar. At the bar, Jacques Fagnart, commissioner of police for Dinant (Belgium) and Bernard Claude, former prosecutor of the town, gave evidence about the Belgian part of the enquiry and Monique Olivier's denunciations in June 2004, a year after her husband's arrest. Speaking for the first time about the events, she tried to brush aside the argument of a, "criminal pact," which according to the prosecution, would have unified the spouses. The letters seized at her house which alluded to the help promised to her husband in his hunt for young virgins was only, "words." "It was not feasible," according to her.

The events about which Michel Fourniret has refused to speak, continuing to cash in on his participation to the debates against a hypothetical trial without the public or journalists. One year in, he tracked the killer of the Ardennes. Yesterday, he gave a hyper-meticulous account, by way of making up for, no doubt, the Federal Police mistakes at the time of Dutroux. "I was facing two walls with two different facades," he said: Monique Olivier, head lowered, hair in her eyes, and Michel Fourniret, the reasoner. The weakest link, it was her. For a year, he accumulates facts. There are tapes, scientific analyses of the slightest traces, an interview under hypnosis, a session with a lie detector, Monique Olivier cracks. She makes her first confessions. Fagnard rejoices.

Association Estelle

On January 9th 2003, at around 18.00, Estelle Mouzin, a little girl aged 9, disappeared in Guermantes, in Seine-et-Marne, on her way home from school. Since that date there has been no news of her. The, "Association Estelle," was created to provide support to her parents and to enable her to find her family and her freedom.

Estelle's family refuses to accept the inevitable. They are determined to do everything they can, for as long as it takes, to find Estelle.

So many missing children. Little Estelle was just walking home from school, something that nine year-old children do every day during school terms, all over the world. Nine years of age is too grown-up to have mummy or daddy hold a hand on the way home; a nine year-old wants to walk home by herself. Those of us who have had children will know this.

I am trying to imagine what it must be like to wave goodbye in the morning as your child goes off to school, then to wait for her to come home when she should....and to wait...and wait....and wait...and the child does not come. I know that sense of relief when a child comes home, 20 minutes later than usual, saying she stopped at the shop, or she played a game with a friend. What must it be like when that relief does not come? When the child does not come home? I can only begin to imagine the fear and the terrible anxiety and my heart goes out to the family of Estelle Mouzin and all other families, who do not know what has happened to a child who has gone missing.

Belgium re-opens the case

The Belgian police has re-opened an enquiry to re-examine the incriminating trail of the alleged serial killer, Michel Fourniret, in the case of the disappearance of Estelle Mouzin in Guermantes (Seine-et-Marne) on January 9th 2003.

According to the daily newspaper, Le Soir, Dinant's public prosecutor is going to review the circumstances of the telephone call made at the time of that disappearance from Fourniret's Belgian home, which exonerates him in the eyes of the French police. He had been under suspicion after his arrest in 2003 because he owns a white van like the one which was reported near the scene of Estelle Mouzin's disappearance. A press photo of the little girl was found on his computer,

"Michel Fourniret nie toute implication dans ces faits et la police française l'a mis hors de cause, car un appel au fils de Fourniret, Christian, qui fêtait le 9 janvier 2003 son anniversaire, a été passé peu après 20h00 le jour de la disparition d'Estelle Mouzin, du domicile que les Fourniret avaient alors en Belgique, à Sart-Custinne. La fillette ayant disparu vers 18h00, la police française juge que Fourniret ne pouvait être présent à ce moment à Guermantes, éloignée de 276 km de Sart-Custinne. Pourtant, le fils de Michel Fourniret ne se souvient pas de l'appel et ne peut donc dire qui l'a passé. Les enquêteurs belges souhaitent donc s'assurer que le tueur en série présumé n'a pas utilisé un stratagème pour se construire un alibi."

Michel Fourniret denies all involvement in these events and the French police has ruled him out of the picture, because a call to Fourniret's son, Christian, celebrating his birthday on 9th January, was made a little after 20.00 on the day of Estelle Mouzin's disappearance, from the home which the Fournirets had at that time in Belgium, in Sart-Custinne. The little girl having disappeared around 18.00, the French police considers that Fourniret could not have been in Guernantes, 276km distant from Sart-Custinne, at that time. However, Michel Fourniret's son has no recollection of the call and therefore cannot say that it happened. The Belgian investigators wish to ensure that the alleged serial killer has not used a ploy to construct an alibi for himself.

Des centaines d'interrogatoires et des investigations tous azimuts n'ont pas permis aux policiers de trouver la moindre piste dans cette affaire. En février dernier, ils ont détruit partiellement dans cette procédure un restaurant chinois des environs de Guermantes, à la recherche d'un corps de fillette qu'une rumeur, infondée, disait enterré sur les lieux. Such a hypothesis is rejected by the public prosecutor of Meaux (Seine-et-Marne)

The investigating judge in charge of information relating to Estelle Mouzin's abduction has led, with the Belgian authorities, "various investigations to do with the possibility of the telephone call being diverted," recorded as having been made from Michel Fourniret's home, René Pech the public prosecutor of the city, wrote in a press release. "In the current state of the investigations into how it was carried out, these have not led the police to be able to substantiate the existence of such call-forwarding," he said. The Estelle Mouzin case has gone to the top of the state, the president Nicolas Sarkozy, having promised the parents that every effort would be made to shed light. Hundreds of interrogations and full-scale investigations have not allowed the police to find the smallest lead in this case. Last February, in this operation, they partially destroyed a Chinese restaurant on the outskirts of Guermantes in the search for the body of a young girl, which an unfounded rumour said was buried on the premises. Kate and Gerry McCann deserve better than this!

Comments on this blog are monitored because there have been a few really sick and abusive ones posted. The one I am copying below was posted yesterday, Monday March 31st at 1.53pm GMT. It appears to be a comment in support of Kate and Gerry McCann, though I'm not sure if it is even that.

This comment was contributed to a post about the married couple having been arrested in connection with the death of Mari Luz and has absolutely no relevance to that subject. So, for a start, it is so disrespectful to the tragedy of that little girl's fate and to that child's family.

Anonymous appears to be angry about what is said on the 3Arguidos forum about the Madeleine McCann case and I assume the comment is meant as a supportive one for Madeleine's parents. Well, I am not in a position to say what the McCanns are guilty of. I am of the opinion that they should not have left their children alone. Apart from the established fact that the children were on their own, I have no way of knowing what other evidence there is in the hands of the Portuguese police and therefore I have no right to make any kind of accusation.

What I do know is that Kate and Gerry McCann are intelligent and well-educated people. If this is the kind of person they have as supporters, then I feel very sorry for them. As educated and intelligent people, they deserve a much better class of people on their side.

Mari Luz: "Who should I ask why this happened?

It is three hard months since the disappearance of Mari Luz and these last months, which Juan José Cortès and his family have experienced have been especially difficult. Qui dit que dans si cet homme sort de prison dans 20 ans, il ne va pas commettre à nouveau le même crime ?"

Rappelons que Santiago del Valle a commis toute un série d'abus sur des enafnst, de Séville à Huelva en passant par Gijon, le tout en trompant à chaque fois la justice."

Whole life sentence.

The only comfort for Juan José Cortès at this moment, is to ensure that his daughter's murderers pay for what they have done. "That justice is done." When he is asked what would be a fair sentence, he responds quickly: "That my daughter is given back to me, that would be justice! But as that is not possible, then that they never come out of prison!"Mari Luz's father is very clear, he wants the debate on whole life sentence to be re-opened in Spain. He does not understand those who oppose it and states that: "If a man takes away the life of my daughter and he takes mine away for ever, he should pay for ever. This is a preventative solution and not a punishment. There are people who cannot live in society because they could commit the same crime again. Who is to say that if this man comes out of prison in 20 years, he is not going to commit the same crime again?

Remember that Santiago del Valle has committed a whole series of abuse against children, from Seville to Huelva, through Gijon, all while each time fooling the police.

Santiago del Valle a certifié que la police l'avait torturé afin d'obtenir des aveux. Ce serait pour ces raisons qu'il s'est rétracté par la suite au point même de nier qu'il ait été en compagnie de Mari Luz dans l'après-midi du 13 janvier. Sa sœur Rosa del Valle a raconté au juge que l'après-midi des faits Santiago lui a demandé de l'amener à Carrefour pour faire des courses et c'est ce qu'elle a fait. Elle l'y a amené, son frère n'ayant pas de permis de conduire. Le centre commercial était fermé, selon sa version, et elle l'a amené un peu plus loin dans une autre zone commerciale qui était ouverte et l'y avait laissé. La Police a des informations qui contredisent ce témoignage et le juge les a considéré comme étant valables. La dernière personne qui a vu Mari Luz en vie, l'a vu autour des 16h40 arrêté devant la maison de Del Valle."

The police accused of having tortured the defendant.

Santiago del Valle testified that the police had tortured him to obtain his confessions. It was for these reasons that he later retracted even to the point of denying that he had been in the company of Mari Luz on the afternoon of January 13th. His sister, Rosa del Valle told the judge that on the afternoon in question Santiago had asked her to take him to Carrefour to run some errands and that is what she did. She took him there, her brother not having a driving licence. The retail centre was closed according to her version, and she took him a bit further to another retail zone which was open and left him there. The police has information which contradicts this witness statement and the judge has deemed it as being valid. The last person to see Mari Luz alive, saw her around 16.40, stopped in front of Del Valle's house.

"La reconstitution des faits indique que Rosa a conduit son frère, avec le cadavre de Mari Luz dans le coffre de sa voiture, jusqu'à la ria et là elle a attendu tandis qu'il jetait le corps à l'eau. Ils sont ensuite retournés ensemble dans la maison de Torrejón. Santiago avait juste eu le temps pour récupérer sa femme, Isabel García et quitter tous les deux précipitamment la ville. Rappelons que les trois étaient présent dans la maison quand Santiago a attiré l'enfant en lui promettant un jouet dans le but de l'agresser sexuellement!"

The reconstruction of events indicates that Rosa drove her brother with the body of Mari Luz in the boot of her car, as far as the estuary and she waited there while he threw the body into the water. They then returned together to the house in Torrejon. Santiago had just had the time to pick up his wife, Isabel Garcia and for the two of them to hastily leave the town. Elle devait aussi être internée il y a deux ans!!!"

Although the forensic reports are not conclusive about how the child died, given the bad state of the body of Mari Luz, the judge had no doubts and considered the person detained as perpetrator of a murder and sexual assault. She issued a warrant , as in the case of his sister. Both were remanded to the prison in Huelva. In the string of absurdities in this case, the prison has now received Santiago del Valle's admission order for the abuse of his five year-old daughter - two years and nine months detention - which should have been served from March 2006!!! Stéphanie Janton, the motorist who took charge of Marie, who was abducted in Ciney on June 26th 2003 by Michel Fourniret, retraced the journey, which led to Fourniret's arrest before the Ardennes Court of Assizes on Monday.
13 year-old Marie had managed to flee from Michel Fourniret's van where she had been tied up and placed herself in the middle of the road. "At a crossroads, I saw a young girl in the middle of the road, making huge signals," said Mme Janton who stopped, thinking there had been an accident. "She told me:'I have just been kidnapped in Ciney," she continued, noting that Marie was, "frightened, a little lost," and showed abrasions to the wrist. The motorist and Marie cross Fourniret's vehicle, which had done a U-turn after Marie's escape. Recording the registration number will allow his questioning.

"Nouvelle victime: Une infirmière* !" Dans son document remis jeudi au président de la cour d'assises des Ardennes, Michel Fourniret avouait "une tentative d'homicide sur la personne d'un professionnel de la santé", évoquant ainsi l'enlèvement avorté d'une infirmière en 1994, sur le parking de l'hôpital de l'AZ-VUB à Jette, rapporte lundi le quotidien Le Soir. New victim: A nurse!

On Monday the daily newspaper, Le Soir, reports that in his document, handed to the president of the Ardennes Court of Assizes on Thursday, Michel Fourniret confessed to, "an attempted murder of a health professional," confessing also to the aborted abduction of a nurse in 1994, in the parking area of the AZ-VUB hospital in Jette.

Michel Fourniret notes never having heard of this attempted murder. This case, as told to the head of ,"attempted abduction," in Dinant, has not, to this day, resulted in an indictment, in spite of Monique Olivier's confession. Fourniret's written confession revives this case, comments Le Soir. "The investigating judge, Hanin, will be advised on Monday of M. Fourniret's words, of which we have not yet received official notification from the French legal authorities." said Philippe Morandini, acting head in charge of the case. "Obviously, if M. Fourniret brings new information to a case, so far qualified as an attempted abduction, and not murder, he would be questioned about his claims, and if relevant, would incur a charge which he would answer to before the Belgian authorities." continued Philippe Morandini.

Des restes du corps et des effets personnels sont retrouvés au fond d'un puits à Bussy-en-Othe (Yonne) en juillet 2006.

The remains of her body and her personal effects were found at the bottom of a well in Bussy-en-Othe (Yonne) in July 2006.

Michel Fourniret a été fermement rappelé à la raison vendredi au deuxième jour de son procès devant la cour d'assises des Ardennes, les magistrats le sommant d'arrêter ses "pitreries grotesques" et de "revenir à la réalité" en acceptant de s'exprimer. En début d'audience, l'avocat général Francis Nachbar a réagi vigoureusement au refus de l'accusé de comparaître spontanément, qui a obligé le président de la cour Gilles Latapie à faire "amener de force" l'accusé, comme la loi l'y autorise. "Vous ne manipulerez plus personne! (...) Tous les jours M. Fourniret vous serez au procès, on vous amènera de force", a mis en garde M. Nachbar en fixant l'accusé, jugé pour sept meurtres aggravés de jeunes femmes ou adolescentes. Ce dernier est resté sans réaction, les bras croisés sur son siège."

On Friday Michel Fourniret was firmly brought back to reason on the second day of his trial before the Ardennes court of Assizes, the magistrates ordering him to stop his, "ridiculous clowning," and to, "come back to reality," and agree to speak for himself. At the start of the hearing, the Attorney General, Francis Nachbar, reacted vigorously to the refusal of the accused to appear voluntarily, which had obliged the president of the court, Gilles Latapie to, "bring by force," the accused, as the law authorises him to do. "You will no longer manipulate people!(....) Every day M. Fourniret you will be at the trial, you will be brought by force," cautioned M. Nachbar, glaring at the accused, on trial for seven aggravated murders of young women or adolescents. There was no reaction from the latter, who stayed on his seat, arms crossed.

"Arrêtez cette indécence insupportable, ces grossièretés, arrêtez une fois pour toutes ces pitreries grotesques!", a ajouté l'avocat général d'une voix forte. Dans l'après-midi, après la longue lecture de l'acte d'accusation d'une centaine de pages, le président a plus calmement demandé à l'accusé - qui répétait son souhait de huis clos - de "revenir au principe de réalité", et de s'exprimer sur les crimes que la justice lui reproche. "Nous sommes là pour un certain nombre de semaines avec des faits à examiner, examinons-les et permettez à vos avocats de faire leur travail (...) On n'est pas à la Star Academy ou dans n'importe quelle émission de télévision", a affirmé Gilles Latapie.

Fourniret semble s'ennuyer. Son épouse fait le gros dos et cherche vainement un ancrage visuel."

Monique Olivier: Monique Olivier does not seem unhappy that her husband should take himself as a soap opera, which he describes as, "romantic buffet," in the seven page manuscript for the attention of the families. An insufferable pseudo-literary verbiage in which he describes himself as devoid of humanity. Indeed the clerk of the court, who continues the endless reading of the indictment, provides personality details, attesting to his dangerousness: "incurable, irrecoverable, cynical, without empathy," he is, "a perverted sadist with a super-sized ego." Fourniret seems worried. His wife turns her back on him and looks in vain for a visual anchor.

" S'adressant à Monique Olivier, jugée pour complicité, M. Latapie a obtenu une franche promesse de coopération. "Je serai là tous les jours et ferai mon possible pour répondre aux questions", a-t-elle assuré. Relativement inexpressive depuis le début des débats, l'ancienne garde malade, troisième épouse de Fourniret, a levé plusieurs fois les yeux au ciel ou fait non de la tête lorsqu'était évoqué dans l'acte d'accusation son profil de "perverse", qui aurait "éprouvé une sorte de fierté à être la complice". On Thursday, one of her lawyers stated that she would benefit from the trial - scheduled until the end of May - to, "ask forgiveness," from the victims' families.

In a rare gesture, M Latapie offered the microphone to the families, who are very supportive of each other, in the open hearing on Friday, just before bringing to an end the debates, which will resume on Monday. "The versions of Michel Fourniret and Monique Olivier are often different, the families are waiting for the two accused to participate in the debate in open court," stressed their spokesperson for the occasion, Valérie Leroy, sister of a young 20 year-old woman, killed in August 1988 in La Marne. In front of the journalists, the relatives of the victims then indicated that they had agreed amongst themselves a symbolic pact, "of solidarity," in response to the criminal pact which, according to the charge, had linked the Fourniret spouses. With this pact, revealed in letters seized at the couple's residence, Michell Fourniret committed, on leaving prison in 1987, to kill Monique Olivier's first husband, on condition that she helped him to satisfy his fantasy for sexual relations with young virgins.

Questioned by AFP on Saturday, the magistrate responsible for press relations at the trial, Christophe Aubertin, was not in a position to say if this move would take place in camera or publicly. Monique Olivier is not charged with any complicity in this case.

The RTL-TVi has not, in effect, respected th Munich Charter, which demands freedom of access to all information and the use of fair methods of obtaining information. The public channel accusesthe commercial channel of having, "requisitioned," in return for remuneration in the form of payment for travel and accommodation, Michel Fourniret's first victim, Dahina Le Guennan. The arrangement agreed between her and the private channel, prohibits this witness from speaking to another French community television channel between the 25th and the 27th of March.

Something that absolutely astounds me about this is that Monique Olivier wants to apologise and ask for forgiveness. She has, apparently, taken stock of what she has done and wants to ask for forgiveness. After so many years of helping Fourniret? It now occurs to her to take stock of what she has done? Perhaps I am just cynical and unbelieving, but it seems to me that Monique Olivier is a little late in her realisation of the enormity of these crimes and this is her attempt to lessen the sentence which the court may seek to impose on her.

If I were a parent of one of the young girls that she and Fourniret had violently killed, I don't know if I could trust the sincerity of her remorse or if I could forgive her. For such evil people, forgiveness, like vengeance, would be God's not mine. That woman deserves to be punished to the full extent that the law allows. May she sit in prison for the rest of her life, with plenty of time to consider what she has done.
