L'automobiliste et Marie croiseront le véhicule de Fourniret qui avait fait demi-tour après la fuite de Marie. Le relevé du numéro de plaque permettra son interpellation."

Stéphanie Janton, the motorist who took charge of Marie, who was abducted in Ciney on June 26th 2003 by Michel Fourniret, retraced the journey, which led to Fourniret's arrest before the Ardennes Court of Assizes on Monday.
13 year-old Marie had managed to flee from Michel Fourniret's van where she had been tied up and placed herself in the middle of the road. "At a crossroads, I saw a young girl in the middle of the road, making huge signals," said Mme Janton who stopped, thinking there had been an accident. "She told me:'I have just been kidnapped in Ciney," she continued, noting that Marie was, "frightened, a little lost," and showed abrasions to the wrist. The motorist and Marie cross Fourniret's vehicle, which had done a U-turn after Marie's escape. Recording the registration number will allow his questioning.

"Nouvelle victime: Une infirmière* !" Dans son document remis jeudi au président de la cour d'assises des Ardennes, Michel Fourniret avouait "une tentative d'homicide sur la personne d'un professionnel de la santé", évoquant ainsi l'enlèvement avorté d'une infirmière en 1994, sur le parking de l'hôpital de l'AZ-VUB à Jette, rapporte lundi le quotidien Le Soir. Michel Fourniret précise ne jamais avoir été entendu sur cette tentative d'homicide. Cette affaire mise à l'instruction à Dinant du chef de "tentative d'enlèvement", n'avait à ce jour, jamais débouché sur une inculpation, malgré des aveux de Monique Olivier. L'aveu écrit de Fourniret ravive ce dossier, commente Le Soir. "Le juge d'instruction Hanin sera avisé dès ce lundi des propos de M. Fourniret, dont nous n'avons pas encore reçu la signification officielle de la part des autorités judiciaires françaises", a précisé le premier substitut Philippe Morandini, en charge du dossier. "Il est évident que si M. Fourniret apporte des éléments nouveaux à un dossier jusqu'ici qualifié de tentative d'enlèvement, et non d'assassinat, il devra être interrogé sur ses affirmations et encourir, s'il échet, une inculpation dont il devra répondre devant les institutions belges", poursuit Philippe Morandini."

New victim: A nurse!

On Monday the daily newspaper, Le Soir, reports that in his document, handed to the president of the Ardennes Court of Assizes on Thursday, Michel Fourniret confessed to, "an attempted murder of a health professional," confessing also to the aborted abduction of a nurse in 1994, in the parking area of the AZ-VUB hospital in Jette.

Michel Fourniret notes never having heard of this attempted murder. This case, as told to the head of ,"attempted abduction," in Dinant, has not, to this day, resulted in an indictment, in spite of Monique Olivier's confession. Fourniret's written confession revives this case, comments Le Soir. "The investigating judge, Hanin, will be advised on Monday of M. Fourniret's words, of which we have not yet received official notification from the French legal authorities." said Philippe Morandini, acting head in charge of the case. "Obviously, if M. Fourniret brings new information to a case, so far qualified as an attempted abduction, and not murder, he would be questioned about his claims, and if relevant, would incur a charge which he would answer to before the Belgian authorities." continued Philippe Morandini.

• Isabelle Laville, 17 ans, disparue le 11 décembre 1987 à son retour de l'école à Auxerre. A l'époque Fourniret vient de s'installer avec Monique Olivier à Saint-Cyr-les-Colons (Yonne). Des restes du corps et des effets personnels sont retrouvés au fond d'un puits à Bussy-en-Othe (Yonne) en juillet 2006.

Isabelle Laville, aged 17, disappeared on December 11th 1987 on her way home from school. At that time, Fourniret had just moved in with Monique Olivier in Saint-Cyr-les-Colons (Yonne). The remains of her body and her personal effects were found at the bottom of a well in Bussy-en-Othe (Yonne) in July 2006.

• Fabienne Leroy, 20 ans, disparue le 3 août 1988 dans la Marne. Son corps ensanglanté est découvert le lendemain à proximité du camp militaire de Mourmelon-le-Grand. Après le viol, elle a été tuée d'une balle tirée à bout portant en pleine poitrine.

Son corps est retrouvé le 3 juillet 2004 au château du Sautou à Donchéry (Ardennes), ex-propriété des époux Fourniret. Monique Olivier est poursuivie comme coauteur du meurtre qui a été précédé d'une tentative de viol.

Jeanne-Marie Desramault, aged 21, disappeared on March 18th 1989 at the station in Charleville-Mézières. Her body was found on July 3rd 2004 at the Chateau du Satou in Donchéry (Ardennes), a former property of the Fourniret couple. Monique Olivier is charged with being co-perpetrator of the murder which was preceded by attempted rape.

Michel Fourniret a été fermement rappelé à la raison vendredi au deuxième jour de son procès devant la cour d'assises des Ardennes, les magistrats le sommant d'arrêter ses "pitreries grotesques" et de "revenir à la réalité" en acceptant de s'exprimer. En début d'audience, l'avocat général Francis Nachbar a réagi vigoureusement au refus de l'accusé de comparaître spontanément, qui a obligé le président de la cour Gilles Latapie à faire "amener de force" l'accusé, comme la loi l'y autorise. "Vous ne manipulerez plus personne! (...) Tous les jours M. Fourniret vous serez au procès, on vous amènera de force", a mis en garde M. Nachbar en fixant l'accusé, jugé pour sept meurtres aggravés de jeunes femmes ou adolescentes. Ce dernier est resté sans réaction, les bras croisés sur son siège."

On Friday Michel Fourniret was firmly brought back to reason on the second day of his trial before the Ardennes court of Assizes, the magistrates ordering him to stop his, "ridiculous clowning," and to, "come back to reality," and agree to speak for himself. At the start of the hearing, the Attorney General, Francis Nachbar, reacted vigorously to the refusal of the accused to appear voluntarily, which had obliged the president of the court, Gilles Latapie to, "bring by force," the accused, as the law authorises him to do. "You will no longer manipulate people!(....) Every day M. Fourniret you will be at the trial, you will be brought by force," cautioned M. Nachbar, glaring at the accused, on trial for seven aggravated murders of young women or adolescents. There was no reaction from the latter, who stayed on his seat, arms crossed.

"Arrêtez cette indécence insupportable, ces grossièretés, arrêtez une fois pour toutes ces pitreries grotesques!", a ajouté l'avocat général d'une voix forte. Dans l'après-midi, après la longue lecture de l'acte d'accusation d'une centaine de pages, le président a plus calmement demandé à l'accusé - qui répétait son souhait de huis clos - de "revenir au principe de réalité", et de s'exprimer sur les crimes que la justice lui reproche. "Nous sommes là pour un certain nombre de semaines avec des faits à examiner, examinons-les et permettez à vos avocats de faire leur travail (...) On n'est pas à la Star Academy ou dans n'importe quelle émission de télévision", a affirmé Gilles Latapie.

Fourniret semble s'ennuyer. Son épouse fait le gros dos et cherche vainement un ancrage visuel."

Monique Olivier: Monique Olivier does not seem unhappy that her husband should take himself as a soap opera, which he describes as, "romantic buffet," in the seven page manuscript for the attention of the families. An insufferable pseudo-literary verbiage in which he describes himself as devoid of humanity. Indeed the clerk of the court, who continues the endless reading of the indictment, provides personality details, attesting to his dangerousness: "incurable, irrecoverable, cynical, without empathy," he is, "a perverted sadist with a super-sized ego." Fourniret seems worried. His wife turns her back on him and looks in vain for a visual anchor.

" S'adressant à Monique Olivier, jugée pour complicité, M. Latapie a obtenu une franche promesse de coopération. "Je serai là tous les jours et ferai mon possible pour répondre aux questions", a-t-elle assuré. Relativement inexpressive depuis le début des débats, l'ancienne garde malade, troisième épouse de Fourniret, a levé plusieurs fois les yeux au ciel ou fait non de la tête lorsqu'était évoqué dans l'acte d'accusation son profil de "perverse", qui aurait "éprouvé une sorte de fierté à être la complice". Jeudi, un de ses avocats avait affirmé qu'elle profiterait du procès -prévu jusqu'à fin mai- pour "demander pardon" aux familles de victimes."

Fourniret, pensif, lève une seconde les yeux au plafond : « Nous sommes vendredi ?… » Magnanime et terriblement malin, Gilles Latapie opine : « Voilà, vous réfléchissez… Bon week-end, Monsieur Fourniret ! »"

Keeping the spotlight.

Magnanimous and very shrewd, Gilles Latapie nods, "There you are, you are thinking carefully.....Have a good weekend, M Fourniret!"

Latapie a proposé le micro aux familles, très solidaires, en pleine audience vendredi, juste avant de mettre fin aux débats qui reprendront lundi. "Les versions de Michel Fourniret et Monique Olivier sont souvent différentes, les familles attendent que les deux accusés participent au débat sans huis clos", a souligné leur porte-parole pour l'occasion, Valérie Leroy, soeur d'une jeune femme de 20 ans tuée en août 1988 dans la Marne. Devant des journalistes, les proches des victimes ont ensuite indiqué avoir passé entre eux un pacte symbolique "de solidarité", en réponse au pacte criminel qui selon l'accusation aurait lié les époux Fourniret. D'après ce pacte, révélé par des lettres saisies à un domicile du couple, Michel Fourniret s'était engagé à sa sortie de prison en 1987 à tuer le premier mari de Monique Olivier, à condition qu'elle l'aide à assouvir son fantasme de relations sexuelles avec des jeunes vierges."

In a rare gesture, M Latapie offered the microphone to the families, who are very supportive of each other, in the open hearing on Friday, just before bringing to an end the debates, which will resume on Monday. "The versions of Michel Fourniret and Monique Olivier are often different, the families are waiting for the two accused to participate in the debate in open court," stressed their spokesperson for the occasion, Valérie Leroy, sister of a young 20 year-old woman, killed in August 1988 in La Marne. In front of the journalists, the relatives of the victims then indicated that they had agreed amongst themselves a symbolic pact, "of solidarity," in response to the criminal pact which, according to the charge, had linked the Fourniret spouses. With this pact, revealed in letters seized at the couple's residence, Michell Fourniret committed, on leaving prison in 1987, to kill Monique Olivier's first husband, on condition that she helped him to satisfy his fantasy for sexual relations with young virgins.

Outre le huis clos, il a posé comme préalable à sa "participation positive" aux débats la correction d'un acte d'accusation "imparfait", où "des erreurs se sont glissées". The arrangement agreed between her and the private channel, prohibits this witness from speaking to another French community television channel between the 25th and the 27th of March.

Failed abduction, near Namur.

Something that absolutely astounds me about this is that Monique Olivier wants to apologise and ask for forgiveness. She has, apparently, taken stock of what she has done and wants to ask for forgiveness. After so many years of helping Fourniret? It now occurs to her to take stock of what she has done? Perhaps I am just cynical and unbelieving, but it seems to me that Monique Olivier is a little late in her realisation of the enormity of these crimes and this is her attempt to lessen the sentence which the court may seek to impose on her.

If I were a parent of one of the young girls that she and Fourniret had violently killed, I don't know if I could trust the sincerity of her remorse or if I could forgive her. For such evil people, forgiveness, like vengeance, would be God's not mine. That woman deserves to be punished to the full extent that the law allows. May she sit in prison for the rest of her life, with plenty of time to consider what she has done.

As we announced in brief yesterday, Madeleine's parents have taken part in a television documentary to mark the commemoration of the first anniversary of their daughter's disappearance. The cameras have followed the couple since January. In the documentary, the couple talk at length about Madeleine, of the evening she disappeared, of their, "arguido," status in Portugal and of their decision to return to Great Britain. The parents have not received payment for their participation in the one hour programme for ITV. Instead of paying the parents, the channel has paid the sum of £10,000 into the Find Madeleine Fund.

I don't very often add comments to these articles, but I will add just a brief note, or rather a simple question to this one. I have already, in a previous post, wondered how much information would have been available for an alert, on the night Madeleine disappeared. Look out for a small, blonde child, wearing white, no pink, pyjamas, accompanied by a man with an egg-shaped face with hair. No vehicle description. And a photo? The most up-to-date photo of Madeleine did not appear until, what was it, twenty-three days after she disappeared?

Anyway, I digress from my simple question for Kate and Gerry.

Q: On the evening that Madeleine disappeared, what would have been more useful?

a) An Amber alert?

b) A babysitter?

I have read elsewhere, that Kate and Gerry want to do their best to, "stop," child abdcuctions. Stop child abductions? It ain't gonna happen. As we have seen in the Enfants Kidnappés report above, in Belgium alone there were 451 abductions by parents last year. Would those have been prevented by an Amber alert system? I think not. So, trying to stop them may be like doing a King Canute!

So, if we can't stop abductions, what can we do? Well, we can do our best to prevent them. Abduction by absent parents may be rather difficult to prevent; if a parent has right of access, then legally the risk has to be taken. Abduction by stranger(s)? How to do our best to prevent them? Here are just a few suggestions, which are probably common sense to most parents, even if Clarence Mitchell says that we Brits all leave our children on heir own.

• Make sure you know where your children are.
• Keep the children in your sight at all times when out and about.
• Never leave very young children on their own, especially in an unlocked building.
  

Remember, if you cannot see the building where your children are, you are probably too far away to know if they are choking, vomiting, or have had a serious accident.

In a holiday apartment like those in Praia da Luz, if parents are in the apartment while children are sleeping, it would be rather difficult for an abduction to take place. If the patio doors and the front door are locked and the windows have shutters, which cannot be opened from the outside (an attempt creates a horrendous din apparently) then I would have thought that abduction would be close to impossible. So, if you go on holiday to PDL, especially if your apartment is outside the Mark Warner complex, the night crêche is useful as is the babysitting service, provided by the nannies whom your children will probably have met at the daytime crêche: not strangers then!

Remember folks. In the UK, there is no minimum age for leaving children on their own. However, the law does state that should you do so and your children suffer significant harm as a consequence, you will be held responsible and may be fined or sent to prison, depending on the level of harm to the child.

And lastly, "to ensure that what happened to Madeleine does not happen to another child," never leave your children alone. Can the McCanns possibly be stupid enough to think that an Amber alert system is the way to deal with situations where parents leave their children on their own? God help us if that's the average level of awareness of our UK doctors!

A roll of paper tied with a ribbon

This morning I read that on the first day of his trial at the Ardennes Court of Assizes, Michel Fourniret presented the court with a roll of paper tied with a ribbon. I have photographs of my daughter and a few years later, my son, proudly holding a roll of paper tied with a ribbon, and I look at those photos with love and pride.

Tied with a ribbon. A little girl's hair is tied with a ribbon. A little girl of maybe 12 years old, just leaving childhood behind and entering that phase of becoming a young woman. Just such a young woman was Elisabeth Brichet. Perhaps Elisabeth saw herself as too old, too grown-up, to be wearing a ribbon in her hair. And perhaps Elisabeth's parents were looking forward to that time when they could hold a photograph with love and pride, of their daughter holding a roll of paper tied with a ribbon. But little Elisabeth crossed the path of Michel Fourniret and there would be no more photos, a young life extinguished for the fantasies of a man the world would be better off without.

Michel Fourniret presents his evil in a roll of paper tied with a ribbon. Within that document, it is said that Fourniret describes himself as, "un être mauvais et dénué de tout sentiment humain" - an evil being, devoid of all human feeling. I read that he told his victims, "I am worse than Dutroux." Even now, with the families of his victims there in the court, being forced to live through the stories of how their loved ones were taken from them, Michel Fourniret presents his evil deeds with pride in a roll of paper tied with a ribbon.

The report in Enfants Kidnappés describes Fourniret as, "La bête," the beast. I don't have a word to describe such an evil person. To me, he is not worthy of being called an animal because animals do not kill members of their own species for pleasure. I have no way of understanding how a living thing could look like a human being, walk, talk, breath, eat, like a human being and yet have none of the natural characteristics of any living creature.

Sometimes I forget that I am totally against the death penalty.

My thoughts and prayers are with those families who are sitting through the trauma of this trial, being there for their loved ones, whose lives were taken. Theirs is the love and theirs is the pride that they will face the monster and see justice for all the rolls of paper tied with ribbons, which they will never see.

As I was reading through the list of who had visited my blog today, where they were located and what search words they had used, I noticed that someone had been searching the name Céline Saison. When I read that I realised that these young girls and women, whose lives were taken violently by Michel Fourniret, were just lost in the articles I had posted, almost like incidentals in this courtroom drama that is Michel Fourniret.

So, here are their names and how old they were when they crossed the path of that monster Fourniret and were tragically lost to their families.

Yes, because even though he says he does not want to come, it is still a platform for him. He is going to make an opening statement in which he will probably recap everything which has not pleased him about the procedure, all that which, according to him, is not true in the order for transfer. For the rest he is probably going to address the families of the victims to tell them that he would have wished to meet them and remind them that he would have wished the trial to take place in camera.

Fourniret: his career.

Michel Fourniret was born on the 4th of April, 1942, in a working-class environment in Sedan. A former workman, he became an industrial designer between 1976 and 1984. He did his military service in Algeria. He is the father of five children from three marriages. The last, Sélim, was born in 1988 from his union with Monique Olivier, today sitting at his side in the dock in Charleville-Mézières.

The first trouble Michel Fourniret had with the police dates back to 1966, when he is imprisoned for the first time for sexual assaults on young children. A conviction which will end his first marriage. He is again arrested in 1984 for sexual assaults on fifteen young girls. He is then given seven years in prison, of which two are suspended. It is during this incarceration that Michel Fourniret meets Monique Olivier through a classified ad. A lengthy correspondence begins in which Michel Fourniret reveals his fantasies and explains his obsession with virginity.

They eventually conclude a, "pact": he undertakes to get rid of the former partner of Monique Olivier, who says she was battered, in exchange she promises to help him in his, "hunt," for virgins. On his release from prison in 1987, Michel Fourniret and Monique Olivier are married. There follows the alleged criminal career, for which they are appearing before the Ardennes Assizes. (M6)

Santiago Garcia, aged 52, the man who admitted to being the perpetrator of the murder of Mari Luz in Huelva claims now that the child died accidentally.

The alleged killer was arrested yesterday afternoon in Cuenca where he had just arrived with his wife, with whom he lives in the Pajaroncillo area, a village of a hundred inhabitants where he sought refuge after having left Huelva the day after Mari Luz's disappearance.

"Depuis les premières heures de la disparition que Santiago était pointé comme le principal suspect car Mari Luz avait été aperçue en vie pour la dernière fois passant devant sa maison dans le quartier d’El Torrejón, Huelva."

Santiago has been down as the prime suspect since the first hours after the disappearance because Mari Luz was seen alive for the last time, passing his house in the El Torrejon district of Huelva.

A source from the Unit for Specialised and violent Crime (UDEV) rsponsible for the arrest, confirmed that the suspect claimed today that Mari Luz, "fell," during the struggle and died accidentally.

Due to his record of abuse of small children, including his own daughter, had already been interrogated and his house searched but the police had not found the slightest evidence of Mari Luz's having been there.
