Update 12/06/08:

I think there may be a typo in the Enfants Kidnappés report concerning the sentence imposed on Abdallah Ait Oud. The report states that Ait Oud would be eligible for release in 8 years, whereas elsewhere the author comments that Ait Oud would probably die behind bars. I think that whoever processed the report may have simply left off a digit in front of the 8.

The Canadian Press reports that the sentence is 28 years.

"BRUSSELS, Belgium — A child rapist convicted of raping and murdering two schoolgirls in eastern Belgium in 2006 was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.

Judge Stephane Goux told Abdallah Aid Oud, 40, that the 28-year sentence is "serious punishment" that includes giving authorities the right to keep him behind bars indefinitely if they determine he is threat to society, notably children.

On Tuesday, a jury in Liege had convicted Aid Oud on 23 counts of abduction, rape and murder in the killings of stepsisters Stacy Lemmens, 7, and Nathalie Mahy, 10. Their bodies were found stuffed into a storm sewer alongside a railroad line running through Liege after a three-week, countrywide search.

The killings horrified Belgians already traumatized by a string of murders by child rapist Marc Dutroux in the same region a decade ago.

Aid Oud was a convicted rapist who had been released from a secure psychiatric unit in December 2005 after serving a sentence for child sex abuse. However, he denied involvement in the schoolgirls' deaths."

Après 13 jours d'audience, la cour d'assises de Liège a condamné Abdallah Ait Oud, un soudeur marocain de 40 ans, à la réclusion à perpétuité ainsi qu'à la mise à disposition du gouvernement pendant 10 ans à l'issue de sa peine, pour l'assassinat, le viol, les attentats à la pudeur et l'enlèvement de Nathalie Lemmens et de Stacy Mahy. La justice a ainsi appliqué pratiquement la peine maximum à celui qui, pendant 13 jours, comme il l'avait déjà fait pendant les deux années d'enquête, a nié toute participation aux faits.

After 13 days of the hearing, the Liège court of assizes condemned Abdallah Ait Oud, a Moroccan welder aged 40, to life imprisonment as well as supervision by the government for 10 years after his term in prison for murder, rape, indecent assault and abduction of Nathalie Mahy and Stacy Lemmens. The court has thus imposed almost the maximum sentence on the person who, for 13 days, denied all participation in the events, as he had already done during the two years of the investigation.

Le doute, si faible puisse-t-il être, était cependant présent au début de cette session d'assises. Personne n'a vu formellement Abdallah Ait Oud en compagnie des fillettes, personne ne l'a vu sur les lieux exacts des méfaits. Dans la salle d'audience, la boîte vitrée recelant habituellement les pièces à conviction est d'ailleurs restée vide. Le procès a débuté doucement. Les premiers témoignages, souvent flous, imprécis voire orientés, n'ont guère apporté d'éléments neufs.

It is true that the man, with a significant criminal record, notably for acts of indecency, had everything as the perfect guilty party, “But it is not because he is capable that he is guilty,” remarked Me Poiré, pleading the benefit of the doubt. Doubt, as feeble as it may be, was however present at the start of that session of the assizes. No one officially saw Abdallah Ait Oud in the company of the little girls, no one saw him in the exact scenes of the offences. In the courtroom, the glass box which usually holds the evidence remained empty. The trial started gently. The first witness statements, often vague, imprecise, seen to be directed, added scarcely any new details.

"Il ne s'en rappelle plus", plaidera la défense, évoquant l'alcool, la drogue et les médicaments. Mais la deuxième semaine de procès a marqué un tournant. Les experts ont expliqué comment des fibres des vêtements des fillettes se sont retrouvées sur ceux de l'accusé ; comment des fibres de la couette de l'accusé ont été découvertes sur les habits des enfants. Les experts ont écarté le caractère fortuit de ces tranferts. D'autres experts, spécialisés en botanique et en chimie, ont pour leur part révélé la présence de végétaux très spécifiques, semblables à ceux des lieux de la découverte des corps des enfants, sur les vêtements de l'accusé et dans le siphon de son évier. Plus tard, des spécialistes de l'INCC ont expliqué que trois cheveux de Stacy, arrachés, avaient été découverts dans le pantalon de l'accusé.

Some teenagers remembered having met the accused on the evening of the events, June 9th 2006. They explained that the man had suggested to them going to look for tortoises. “The don’t recall any more about it,” the defence out forward, mentioning alcohol, drugs and medicines. But the second week of the trial marked a turning point. The experts explained how fibred from the clothing of the little girls were found on those of the accused; how fibres from the accused man’s quilt were found on the children’s clothes. The experts ruled out any accidental transfers. Other experts, specialists in botany and chemistry, for their part revealed the presence of very specific plant material, similar to those from the places where the children’s bodies were found, on the clothing of the accused man and in the u-bend of his sink. Later, specialists from INCC explained that three of Stacy’s hairs, which had been torn out, had been discovered in the trousers of the accused.

Les parents des fillettes ont assisté à presque toutes les audiences. Avec grande dignité pour la plupart. Assis à l'écart, Thierry Lemmens est resté discret, le plus souvent immobile, gardant un visage figé. Très abattu, Didier Mahy a pour sa part "craqué" à plusieurs reprises. Omniprésente, Catherine Dizier, a quant à elle défié l'accusé à plusieurs reprises. En paroles tout d'abord, lors de son audition, quand elle l'a sommé de dire la vérité ; en geste ensuite en brandissant une photo des fillettes face à lui en le fixant droit dans les yeux.

Abdallah Ait Oud was in the vicinity of the little girls on the evening they disappeared. He, himself, has a, “gap,” of more than 24 hours in how he spent his time. A witness told of having seen him wandering near Vivegnis road when the bodies were hidden in the drainage channel. Even without evidence– it is not up to the jury, anyway to decide on the basis of evidence – these details, are for the attorney general and the civil parties, enough to forge a personal belief; a belief in guilt. The parents of the little girls were present at almost every hearing. With great dignity for the most part. Sitting on the sidelines, Thierry Lemmens kept quiet, usually still, face impassive. Very despondent, Didier Mahy, for his part, “cracked,” on several occasions. As for the omnipresent Catherine Dizier, she challenged the accused on several occasions. In words first of all during her hearing, when she summoned him to tell the truth; then in gestures in waving a photo of the little girls in his direction while looking him directly in the eye.

L'un des moments forts de ce procès a sans conteste été la visite des lieux. En compagnie des parties civiles et de l'accusé, les jurés, les avocats et la cour ont refait le trajet de l'assassin, depuis le café "Les Armuriers" jusqu'aux voies de chemin de fer, où les corps des fillettes ont été découverts. Presque deux ans jour pour jour après la disparition des enfants, les familles ont pu soulever la plaque métallique qui cachait le corps de Nathalie.Condamné à perpétuité, Abdallah Ait Oud est libérale dans 8 ans. One of the highlights of this trial was undoubtedly the visit to the scenes. Accompanied by the civil parties and the accused, they jury, the lawyers and the judge followed the murderer’s route, from, “Les Armuriers,” café to the railway lines, where the bodies of the little girls were discovered. Les jurés de la cour d'assises de Liège (est de la Belgique) ont reconnu mardi un homme de 40 ans, Abdallah Aït Oud, coupable de l'assassinat et du viol des petites Stacy Lemmens et Nathalie Mahy, deux ans jour pour jour après la disparition des fillettes.Les 12 membres du jury populaire s'étaient retirés pour délibérer en début d'après-midi, après deux semaines d'un procès qui a replongé la Belgique dans l'horreur de la pédophilie et des meurtres d'enfants, dix ans après l'affaire Dutroux.

On Tuesday, the jury at the court of assizes of Liège (and also of Belgium) found 40 year-old Abdallah ait Oud guilty of the murder and rape of the little girls Stacy lemmens and Nathalie Mahy, two years to the day after the disappearance of the girls. The twelve members of the jury retired to deliberate at the start of the afternoon, after two weeks of a trial which has plunged Belgium back into the horrors of paedophilia and child murders, ten years after the Dutroux case.

After an indictment and oral arguments for the defence, the jury, accompanied this time by the president of the chamber and his two assessors, will proceed on Wednesday to a new deliberation to determine the sentence, the Liège prosecutor stated. Abdallah Ait Oud is facing a whole life sentence. Stacy Lemmens, aged 7, and Nathalie Mahy, aged 10, had disappeared at the end of a street party in a popular area of Liége, during the night of 9th to 10th June 2006.

When the verdict was announced, the man collapsed in the dock. The hearing had to be suspended for a few minutes before a doctor, who was present in the court room, certified that the accused was fit to come back to the hearing to finish the reading of the responses to questions. "I am innocent, I am innocent, damn it, I have done nothing," he hurled, at the end of the verdict, thrashing about while being accompanied back to his cell by police officers. "Investigators - eager to avoid the mistakes of the Dutroux case - found the bodies of the girls on June 28, 2006 at a storm water drain near where they had gone missing. Autopsies showed they had been strangled and Nathalie had been raped.

Even before the bodies were discovered, Ait Oud - who has a history of child sex crimes - was prime suspect. He was seen in the neighbourhood of the street party and approached several young girls with invitations to go look for turtles in the woods.

After the two girls disappeared, he went missing for three days even though he knew the police were looking for him. He eventually turned himself in, covered with scratches and having difficulty explaining where he was on the night of the girls' disappearance.

"Our daughters have been avenged," said Nathalie's father, Didier Mahy, at the trial. "I'm relieved, I'm now going to move on to other things."

Abdullah Ait Oud: oral arguments for the civil parties

As we go into the third week of the trial of Abdullah Ait Oud, we read about Friday's session when the oral arguments for the civil parties were heard, as reported by Enfants Kidnappés.

Les parties civiles ont débuté leurs plaidoiries ce vendredi matin aux assises de Liège.

Durant presque trois heures, la maman de Nathalie, Catherine Dizier, a tenu sur ses genoux ou a brandi, les bras tendus vers le box de l'accusé, un cadre contenant des photos noir et blanc des fillettes. Pendant presque trois heures, elle a défié l'accusé du regard, ne baissant jamais les yeux. Dans son box, l'accusé n'a pas bronché. A quelques reprises, il s'est remué sur sa chaise. Mais la plupart du temps, il a gardé les bras croisés, regardant le plaideur et, dans le même axe de regard, la maman de Nathalie.

The civil parties began their oral arguments on Friday morning at the Liège assizes.

For almost three hours, Nathalie’s mother, Catherine Dizier, held on her knees or waved towards the dock, a frame containing black and white photos of the little girls. For nearly three hours, she defied the accused to look, never lowering her eyes. In the dock, the accused did not react. A look of hatred.

“I am amazed by his gentle, sincere-sounding, voice but also by his lack of emotion, even when his gaze meets that of the civil parties,” Me Vincent Sauvage, lawyer for Didier Mahy, noted elsewhere. “Abdallah Ait Out you are not the ideal culprit; you are the culprit!” shouted Me Denis Drion, lawyer for Thierry Lemmens. “You are guilty of having given the vision of your eyes full of hate and lust, as the last image for the two little girls.” He added. For Me Moureau, lawyer for Christiane Granziero, there is no longer any doubt of the guilt of the accused. “It is not because he cannot or will not confess that this generates the least doubt,” he remarked, denouncing the, “cynicism of a psychopath, who is unable to look inside himself to know what he did,” and who will never confess.

Il a proposé gentiment à Nathalie et Stacy d'aller voir des tortues et les a emmenées sans force dans un terrain vague. Quand Nathalie a voulu partir, ils les a empoignées par le bras, comme en témoignent les hématomes retrouvés sur le bras gauche de l'une; sur le droit de l'autre. Il les a traînées dans un endroit discret. Nathalie a crié. Il l'a assommée.

“He is constitutionally incapable of questioning himself and of confessing. He is incapable of admitting to losing at table football through his mistakes, how could he confess?” he stressed. Without the accused’s confession, the families will not know how the events unfolded.
“I am therefore obliged to tell you my story; the version of my personal beliefs.” Announced Me Moureau, describing the children’s last moments, unaware while they were playing,"that very close to them, a man was hunting, a wicked man, a recidivist paedophile and psychopath.” According to him, the perpetrator approached the little girls, whom he had previously marked out. “Little girls, that excites him.” Me Moureau also added. He politely suggested to Nathalie and Stacy that they go and see some tortoises and he led them, without force, into a vacant lot. When Nathalie wanted to leave, he grabbed them by the arms, as evidenced by the bruises found on the left arm of one, the right of the other. He dragged them to a secluded place. Nathalie shouted. He knocked her out.

Irracontable

"Et puis c'est l'horreur", dira Philippe Moureau. Il a mis ses mains et a serré le cou de l'enfant de 7 ans. Entre quelques secondes et quelques minutes, l'air s'est échappé et la petite Stacy est morte. "Il a alors pu s'occuper de Nathalie, mais ça, c'est irracontable", a-t-il souligné. Depuis les faits de 2001, Abdallah Ait Oud a amélioré sa technique. "Et si vous le relâchez, il l'améliorera encore et brûlera les preuves scientifiques", ont prévenu les avocats des parties civiles. Le modus operandi de 2006 est cependant fort similaire à celui des faits de 2001, a remarqué Me Vincent Sauvage. Les deux fois, il a approché ses victimes grâce à un stratagème; demander sa route à la jeune fille de 14 ans en 2001, chercher des tortues en 2006. A deux reprises, il a assommé ses victimes. A deux reprises, il a commis des viols. Les deux fois, il a commis son méfait suite à une frustration; après avoir été traité de pédophile en 2001, après s'être disputé avec sa compagne en 2006. Après les deux faits, il a disparu pendant plusieurs jours.

Irreconcilable.

The modus operandi of 2006 are, however, very similar to those of 2001, remarked Me Vincent Sauvage. On both occasions he approached his victims using a ploy; asking the way of a young 14 year-old in 2001, looking for tortoises in 2006. On both occasions he knocked his victims out. On both occasions, he committed rapes. Both times he committed his wickedness following a frustration; after having been treated as a paedophile in 2001, after arguing with his partner in 2006. After both events, he disappeared for several days.

Erreur de diagnostic

Suite aux faits de 2001, Abdallah Ait Oud a été interné puis libéré 4 ans plus tard car un psychiatre a évoqué une erreur de diagnostic. "La justice a laissé une grenade dégoupillée dans la société", a déploré Me Sauvage, avant de s'adresser aux jurés et de citer le philosphe Edmund Burke: "pour triompher, le mal n' a besoin que de l'inaction de gens de bien". Vendredi après-midi, la cour entendra les plaidoiries de Mes Swennen et Henrard, les conseils de Mme Dizier; de Me Greffe, le conseil du demi-frère de Stacy et de Mes Balland et Delicourt, défendant les intérêts de l'ex-compagne de Thierry Lemmens. Diagnostic error.

Following the events of 2001, Abdallah Ait Oud was imprisoned then freed 4 years later because a psychiatrist made an error in diagnosis. “The law left an unexploded grenade in society,” lamented Me Sauvage, before addressing the jury and citing the philosopher Edmund Burke: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.” On Friday afternoon the court heard the oral arguments of Mes Swennen and Henrard, lawyers for Mme Dizier, and Me Greffe, lawyer for Stacy’s half-brother and Mes Balland and Delicourt, defending the interests of Thierry Lemmens’ ex-partner. There are echoes here of the Fourniret case. Michel Fourniret also had a well worked out strategy for getting young girls and young women to trust him. Fourniret, too, asked several of his victims to direct him, claiming that he could not find his way. Fourniret too, had been to prsion previously for sexual assaults on young women. If Abdallah Ait Oud had not been caught, I wonder if he would have gone on to repeat his wicked crimes. Research seems to show that serial killers often progress from rape to murdering their victims. Fourniret had a wife who colluded with him. I guess we can be thankful, for the potential victims of Ait Oud, who have been saved, that Ait Oud did not have such a wife. His partner tried to say that she had confidence in him, but she did refer to his, "unexplained absence," and of course, the Dutroux case has made the Belgian police more aware of looking for recidivist paedophiles in the community.

I am aware that Ait Oud has not yet been found guilty by the court, but this seems to be inevitable, given the evidence so far. On Monday his lawyers tried to have a motion accepted by the judge, claiming that because of the publicity, and other factors, that Ait Oud could not have a fair trial. This was rejected by the court.

Seuls deux experts ont été entendus mercredi au cours de la 8e journée du procès d'Abdallah Ait Oud devant la Cour d'assises de Liège. Les experts de l'INCC ont mis en évidence la présence de trois cheveux de la petite Stacy dans le pantalon que portait l'accusé le jour des faits.

Only two experts were heard on Wednesday in the course of the eighth day of Abdallah Ait Oud's trial before the Liège court of assizes. The experts from INCC highlighted the presence of three of little Stacy's hairs in the trousers that the accused was wearing on the day of the events.

C'est à des experts de l'INCC qu'ont été confiées les analyses des différents cheveux et poils (complets ou de manière fragmentée) retrouvés sur les corps de Stacy et Nathalie ainsi que sur les vêtements que portait Abdallah Ait Oud le jour des faits. Des analyses microscopiques et génétiques ont été effectuées sur ces prélèvements. Les experts ont pu démontrer que trois cheveux qui présentent les mêmes caractéristiques que ceux de Stacy Lemmens ont été retrouvés dans le pantalon d'Abdallah Ait Oud. Ces trois cheveux ne sont pas tombés de manière naturelle mais ont été arrachés de manière violente. Cette analyse tendrait à démontrer la thèse selon laquelle ces cheveux sont arrivés dans le pantalon d'Ait Oud lorsqu'il a agressé Stacy. (Le vif)

It was these experts who were entrusted with the analysis of the different hairs and (pubic?) hairs (complete or fragmented) found on the bodies of Stacy and Nathalie as well as on the clothes that Abdallah Ait Oud was wearing on the day of the events. Microscopic and genetic analyses were carried out on these samples. The experts were able to show that three hairs which present the same characteristics as those of Stacy Lemmens were found in Abdallah Ait Oud's trousers. These three hairs did not fall in a natural way but were pulled out in a violent manner. This analysis would support the theory, according to which these hairs happened to get into Ait Oud's trousers while he was assaulting Stacy. (Le vif)

Les experts spécialisés dans les analyses de fibres de textiles ont confirmé que des contacts intenses ont eu lieu entre les vêtements portés par l'accusé et les vêtements des deux victimes, Nathalie et Stacy.

Experts specialising in the analysis of textile fibres have confirmed that intense contact took place between the clothes worn by the accused and the clothes of the victims, Nathalie and Stacy.

Spécialiste de l'analyse des fibres auprès de l'Institut national de Criminalistique et Criminologie (INCC), l'expert Fabrice Gazon a rapporté les résultats d'un long travail d'analyse sur les vêtements des deux victimes et de ceux d'Abdallah Ait Oud. Ces expertises visaient à mettre en évidence le type de contacts qui se sont produit entre les protagonistes. Plus de 4.000 heures de travail ont été nécessaires à analyser un total de 5.091 fibres prélevées sur l'ensemble des vêtements.

Fabrice Gazon, a specialist in fibre analysis, from the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (INCC) reported the results of a lengthy work of analysis on the clothes of the two victims and those of Abdallah Ait Oud. Such expert work is aimed at highlighting the type of contact which is produced between the people involved. More than 4,000 hours of work were necessary to analyse 5,091 fibres lifted from all of the clothes.

Fabrice Gazon a précisé que cette technique utilisée depuis 14 ans en Belgique est effectuée à la fois à charge et à décharge de l'accusé. Des centaines de fibres sont généralement échangées lors de contacts entre différentes matières textiles. L'écoulement du temps est un obstacle important à cette analyse puisque plus de 90 pc des fibres échangées disparaissent généralement en 24 heures. Dans le cas du dossier Ait Oud, l'expert a estimé que 10 pc des fibres résultant d'échanges ont pu être récupérées. Mais des fibres très spécifiques ont pu être mises en évidence.

Fabrice Gazon explained that this technique, in use for 14 years in belgium, is carried out to either charge or clear the accused. Hundreds of fibres are usually exchanged during contact between different textile materials. the passage of time is a major obstacle to this analysis since more than 90% of exchanged fibres generally disappear within 24 hours. In the case of Ait Oud, the expert estimated that 10% of the fibres resulting from the exchanges could be recovered. But some very specific fibres could be revealed.

C'est le pantalon d'Abdallah Ait Oud, un jeans aux fibres déformées par la chaleur lors de sa production, qui a contaminé en plus grande partie les vêtements des deux victimes. On a retrouvé ce genre de fibres sur la face arrière du pantalon (285 fibres) de Nathalie Mahy et sur l'avant du t-shirt (plus de 300) de Stacy Lemmens. Un grand nombre de transferts primaires s'est réalisé. Selon l'expert, ces prélèvements indiquent un contact intense entre les vêtements des deux victimes et ceux qu'aurait porté Abdallah Ait Oud le jour des faits. "Il est impossible d'avoir une telle concentration de fibres sans contact intense entre les vêtements attribués à Ait Oud et ceux portés par les fillettes", a précisé l'expert.

It was Abdallah Ait Oud's trousers, jeans shaped by heat treatment during their production, which most contaminated the clothes of the two victims. this type of fibre was found on the back of Nathalie Mahy's trousers (285 fibres) and on the front of Stacy Lemmens' t-shirt. (more than 300) an important number of primary transfers were recorded. According to the expert, these samples indicate intense contact between the clothes of the two victims and those which would have been worn by Abdallah Ait Oud on the day of the events. "it is impossible to have such a concentration of fibres without intense contact between the clothes attributed to Ait Oud and those worn by the two young girls," stated the expert.

L'analyse des fibres a aussi révélé un transfert important de fibres (102) entre une couette de lit appartenant à la compagne d'Ait Oud, les vêtements de ce dernier et les vêtements des deux fillettes. Deux fibres du pantalon de Nathalie Mahy ont également été retrouvées sur l'éponge avec laquelle Ait Oud a lavé ses vêtements. Une autre fibre de ce pantalon a aussi été retrouvée dans le slip de l'accusé.

The analysis of fibres also revealed a significant transfer of fibres (102) between the bed quilt belonging to Ait Oud's partner, Ait Oud's clothes and the clothes of the two young girls. Two fibres from Nathalie's trousers were also found on the sponge with which Ait Oud had cleaned his clothes. Another fibre of these trousers was also found in the underpants of the accused.

L'interprétation des conclusions de l'expert permet de démontrer le rôle important joué par Abdallah Ait Oud dans le transfert de ces fibres. Le nombre de fibres concordantes retrouvées s'élève à 1.708 éléments. "C'est un résultat très important, a précisé l'expert. Rares sont les cas où nous avons autant de types de fibres spécifiques dans les investigations menées dans une affaire. Des transferts croisés ont été mis en évidence, ce qui donne une valeur maximale à l'indice des fibres. En fonction de l'endroit de la découverte, de la rareté des fibres et des transferts constatés, nous attribuons une valeur maximale à ces concordances. Ces transferts résultent de contacts très intenses en pression et en durée. Le contact est d'autant plus intense que le dernier contact est violent. Aucun autre type de contact aussi important et étranger à Ait Oud ne peut être mis en évidence".

The interpretation of the expert's conclusions enable the demonstration of the important role played by Abdallah Ait Oud in the transfer of these fibres. Th number of matching fibres goes to 1,708 traces. "This is a very important result," stated the expert. "There are few cases where we have so many types of fibres specific to investigations being conducted in a case. These cross-transferences were clear, which gives maximum value to the fibre's clues. Depending on where they were found, the rarity of the fibres, and the transfers recorded, we attribute an optimum value to the matches. These transfers result from contacts of very intense pressure and duration. The contact was all the more intense given that the last contact was violent. No other type of contact as important and other than Ait Oud can be found.

L'expert a conclu que ces résultats ne laissent plus de doute sur la violence des contacts entre les victimes et les vêtements d'Ait Oud. Ils ne peuvent s'expliquer par des contacts fortuits ou normaux. A l'issue de ce témoignage, Ait Oud a souhaité prendre la parole. "L'expert n'avait pas l'air crédible dans tout ce qu'il disait lorsque je l'ai rencontré, a-t-il soutenu tout en provoquant des rires dans la salle d'audience. Il est devenu tout rouge quand je lui ai parlé des techniques de brûlage des vêtements. Il m'a même dit qu'il faisait ses recherches uniquement sur Internet !". L'expert a démenti ces allégations. The expert concluded that the results leave no doubt about the violence of the contacts between the two victims and Ait Oud's clothes. They cannot be explained by normal or accidental contact. On the subject of this witness statement, Ait Oud wished to take the floor. "The expert did not sound credible in everything he said when I met him, sustaining the whole lot by provoking laughter in the courtroom. He went very red when I told him about the techniques for the heat treatment of clothing. He even told me that he only did his research on the internet!" the expert has denied these allegations. Abdallah Aït Oud: as Fourniret goes to prison for life, the trial of Abdallah Aït Oud gets underway in Belgium.

During the night of 9th/10th June 2006, Stacy Lemmens, aged 7, and Nathalie Mahy, aged 10, were abducted in Liège, Belgium, at the end of a jumble sale held in a popular area of Liège. Their bodies were found 18 days later in a drainage channel bordering a railway line. On May 26th, Abdallah Aït Oud went on trial at the assizes court in Liège for their abduction and murder.

The first session of the trial. on May 26th, was presided over by Stéphane Goux, who directed the trial of Marc Dutroux in 2004. The trial began with the constitution of the jury from the 100 potential jurors who had been called. The families of the victims were present on the opening day. The afternoon was taken up with an opening address from the presiding judge, Pascale Goossens, and from the investigators.
Abdallah Aït Oud denies all charges.

May 27th: on the second day of the trial, the morning was devoted to the witness statements of four police officers, who had been part of the investigating team. On a giant screen, the police showed images of the torso of the accused on the day of his arrest, with scratches and scrapes along his back and arms, thought to be from the thicket through which he had dragged the bodies to the drainage channel by the railway line. The accused explained that the day before the jumble sale he had wanted to get to his mate's apartment via the back way, and had had to go through an area of rough ground. The investigators demonstrated the inconsistency of this statement by showing slides of the area through which Abdallah Aït Oud would have passed on the way to his mate's apartment: an abandoned garden, the beginning of a path, a trunk, half on its side for climbing a first wall, a second low wall, and inner court yard, a side passageway with a door which was perhaps open, and finally the door to his friend's place.

The photographs show an area where the nettles and brambles are no taller than 30cm (c. 12") and not tall enough to injure below the waist.

Alain Remue, head of the missing person's organisation, gave details of the search for the two girls. He said that on the evening of June 19th, 10 days after the girls disappeared, there had been a terrific storm, which may have carried the bodies to the remote location in which they were found.

Les expertises ont démontré que Stacy Lemmens et Nathalie Mahy sont mortes étranglées. Il a également pu être démontré que Nathalie Mahy a été violée avant d'être tuée.

Fifth day of the trial. Stacy and Natalie were strangled to death. The morning of the fifth day of Abdallah Ait Oud's trial on Friday, was devoted to evidence from the medical examiners before the Liège court of assizes. The experts demonstrated that Stacy and Nathalie were strangled to death. It was also demonstrated that Nathalie Mahy was raped before being killed.

Lors de cette journée consacrée aux expertises médico-légales, les parents des victimes n'ont pas souhaité assister à l'audience et subir le contenu des rapports des experts. Seule Catherine Dizier, la mère de Nathalie Mahy, était présente dans la salle d'audience pour écouter les médecins. Les jurés ont pu entendre en prélude aux dépositions des différents experts légistes le témoignage d'un homme de la Protection civile qui était occupé dans les recherches des victimes le jour de la découverte des corps de Stacy et Nathalie. C'est cet homme qui a découvert le premier corps le 28 juin 2006. Les experts ont également livré une approximation concernant la date du décès des deux victimes, en tenant comptes des éléments relevés lors de la découverte des corps. Pour les deux fillettes, les médecins estiment avec un maximum de probabilités que les décès remontent entre 15 jours et trois semaines au moment de la découverte. Il est donc estimé que les décès de Stacy et Nathalie sont survenus entre le 7 et le 13 juin 2006.

During that day, devoted to the medico-legal experts, the victims' parents did not wish to be present at the hearing and suffer the contents of the experts' reports. Only Catherine Dizier, Nathalie Mahy's mother, was present in the courtroom to listen to the doctors. As a prelude to the statements of the different legal experts, the jurors were able to hear the witness statement of a man from Civil Protection who was involved in the search on the day of the discovery of the bodies of Stacy and Nathalie. For the two little girls, the doctors estimated that the deaths most probably occurred between two and three weeks before their discovery. Au moment de la disparition des fillettes, elle sert au café "Les Armuriers". C'est pourquoi elle sera interrogée dans le cadre de l'enquête. C'est à cette occasion qu'elle apprend les antécédents judiciaires d'Abdallah Aït Oud. Et pourtant, le dimanche, quand elle sonne chez lui pour l'avertir de ce que la police le recherche, elle se garde de lui en donner les raisons. Je venais d'apprendre son passé dit-elle. S'agissant de petites filles, j'avais peur qu'il parte.

The partner of the accused still trusts him. At the bar, Christelle recounts the last hours spent in the company of her fiancé on the day of the jumble sale then his unexplained absence. At the time of the disappearance of the two little girls, she was serving in the café, "Les Armuriers." That is why she would be questioned in the context of the enquiry. Cela ne fait aucun doute : cette jeune femme de 22 ans est toujours amoureuse de l'accusé. La teneur des courriers qu'elle lui envoie en prison en témoigne. Mais les sentiments qu'elle porte encore à celui qui est accusé de viol et d'assassinat de deux petites filles, l'amour qu'elle peut encore ressentir ne sont pas de nature à éclairer le dossier et participer à la manifestation de la vérité.

Une affaire de tortues :

Avant elle, la cour avait entendu une série de témoins. Et de ces auditions, les conclusions des avocats des familles sont sans appel : l'accusé est un fieffé menteur.

Plusieurs groupes de jeunes gens, le vendredi du drame, ont été abordés en divers endroits par un individu au crâne rasé, qui a proposé d'aller dans des parcs ou sur des pelouses à la recherche de tortues de jardin pour les revendre. Les uns se sont moqués ; d'autres se sont méfiés ; d'autres encore, ont suivi le personnage. Il ne s'est rien passé mais l'accusation pense tenir le mode opératoire de l'approche du prédateur, il nie mais les adolescents l'identifient, parfois à 100%. Mais un grand gamin de 14 ans, affirme, je l'ai accompagné sans crainte parce que des gens comme lui, j'en croise tous les jours.

A case of tortoises.

Before her, the court had heard a series of witnesses. And from those speeches, the conclusions of the families' lawyers are irrevocable: the accused is an utter liar.

On the Friday of the tragedy, several groups of young people had been approached in various places by an individual with a shaved head, who suggested going into the parks or onto the lawns to hunt for garden tortoises to sell. Some laughed; others were wary; others followed the person. Nothing happened, but the prosecution maintains it is the modus operandus of the predator's approach, he denies but the teenagers identify him, sometimes 100%. But a tall kid aged 14, states, I went with him without fear because people like him, I come across every day.

L'affaire des tortues, est-elle l'élément qui va confondre le prévenu ? Peut-être. Le conseil de l'un des parents, arbore d'ailleurs une cravate avec quelques reptiles à carapace comme motifs. Mais parmi les témoins, les uns décrivent un homme en état d'ébriété, bizarre, au regard jaune ; les autres, un type normal ; avec un T-shirt blanc, selon une fille ; un T-shirt noir, selon son amie. Allez donc savoir ….

The case of the tortoises, is it the detail which is going to unmask the accused? Perhaps. The advice of one of the parents, sporting a tie with motifs of several shelled reptiles. But amongst the witnesses, some describe a man in an enebriated state, odd, looking yellow; others, a normal type; with a white T shirt, according to one girl; a black T shirt, according to her friend. Go figure.....

Une lettre qui accuse "R.V".

Cette lettre, signée "R.A" est parvenue au palais de Justice à l'attention de l'avocat. Annexée à une photo de l'accusé, la lettre, rédigée en 6 points, stipule que celui-ci est innocent. La lettre signale que seule la petite Nathalie connaissait son agresseur et qu'il fallait donc chercher dans son entourage (famille et amis). L'auteur signale que les initiales de l'auteur sont "R.V." et que celui-ci était âgé entre 25 et 30 ans au moment des faits. 'auteur stipule aussi que les radiesthésistes permettent de retrouver certaines choses "n'en déplaisent à leurs détracteurs". Le courrier a été versé au dossier. (Belga/RTBF/Levif/7sur7)

A letter that accuses, "R.V."

This letter, signed, "R.A." turned up at the law court for the attention of the attorney. Attached to a photo of the accused, the letter, written out in 6 points, stipulates that this one is innocent. The letter reports that only little Nathalie knew her attacker and it was, therefore, necessary to look at those surrounding her (family and friends). the writer reports that the perpetrator's initials are "R.V." and that this one was aged between 25 and 30 years at the time of the deeds. The writer also reports that dowsers could find certain things, "not unpleasing to their detractors." The letter has been filed. (Belga/RTBF/Levif/7sur7)
