Josef Fritzl may never stand trial. If his heart doesn't kill him, the other inmates might!

Authorities in Austria are concerned that Josef Fritzl, who kept his daughter locked in a cellar for 24 years and fathered seven chilren by her, may never stand trial. Originally, it was predicted that the trial would start in the autumn this year. However, prosecutors now feel that it may be two years before Elisabeth Fritzl and her children, who were confined with her, may take at least two years to be ready to give evidence at a trial.

Meanwhile, it is reported widely that Josef Fritzl is afraid to leave his prison cell for fear of being attacked by fellow prisoners.

Typical Daily Star language. Anyone who is in prison is a, "violent lag." Yet it seems to me that ordinary prisoners tend to have some kind of code of conduct with regard to children. This is why the, "nonces," are kept separate from the general prison population. Someone may be incarcerated for crimes against other adults of a fairly serious nature, but crimes against children are very different and those who commit crimes against children are likely to be targeted.

"Inmates at the prison where Josef Fritzl is locked up have branded the Austrian criminal "Satan" and vowed to kill him, a former prisoner has claimed.

Fritzl, who held his daughter captive for 24 years in an underground den and had seven children by her, has refused to leave his cell for fear of being attacked, according to the inmate.

"At night the other cons shout out 'We're going to get you Satan, come out and play', and they bang on the door when they walk past his cell," he was quoted in the Austrian Times as saying."

And then there's Fritzl's heart condition.

So, there we have it. After 24 years of doing what he liked with his daughter's life, he may never be punished for his crimes. I guess he is already being punished since his liberty has been taken from him and I am sure he already knows that he will never again see the light of day outside of a prison. For justice to be done, though, perhaps we should hope that he will eventually have to stand in a courtroom and face what he has done.
I do wonder if it would be a welcome release for Elisabeth and her children if they did not have to go through that. If Josef Fritzl were to die before the case came to trial, Elisabeth and the children could possibly just get on with trying to make a life for themselves and not have to face the glare of the world's media and they would know that the man being called, "The Austrian Monster," was gone from the world and their lives.

Good God in Heaven! Are these from women who have no idea what Elisabeth Fritzl has been through? What kind of fantasies do these women harbour about a monster like Fritzl? I am sure that the reality would totally destroy any and all of them. Strange or what?

Lettres dans lesquelles des femmes lui déclarent leur flamme et expliquent que Fritzl n'est pas mauvais et a bon coeur.Dans la majorité des lettres, ces femmes qui écrivent du monde entier expliquent que Fritzl a simplement voulu protéger sa fille Elisabeth en l'enfermant dans cette cave et ce pour l'écarter du mauvais chemin, pour éviter qu'elle n'entre en contact avec la boisson et la drogue.

The joy of motherhood is a subject which comes up often in these letters. For these women, Fritzl had seven children with his daughter so that she would know the joy of being a mother. Josef Fritzl, aged 73, was arrested on April 27th this year in his village Amstetten in Austria. He had abused his daughter since she was eleven years old. In August 1984, when she reached tha ge of 18, he imprisoned her in the cellar of the house. From the repeated abuse seven children were born, aged from 5 to 19 years. I wonder how many of these women would have thought Fritzl had a good heart if they had been locked in an underground cellar for 24 years, repeatedly raped by him and left without medical attention through six pregnancies and births? Would any of them think he was saving them from taking the wrong path in life? Somehow I doubt that anyone would feel grateful to him.

If Josef Ftitzl knew that what he was doing was wrong, then in my opinion, he is responsible for his actions. If he managed to be organised enough to maintain two very separate families, living in such close proximity, then he is surely not insane within any legal definition. He may be bad, but that does not make him insane. Josef Fritzl planned the imprisonment of his daughter, built his dungeon and lured her into it. He kept up the evil charade for 24 years. Not the work of an insane man, just the actions of a very evil one.

"Depraved Josef Fritzl opened the doors yesterday to the dark cellar kingdom where he caged his daughter for 24 years, and admitted: "I know now I'm insane."

I don't know what to say to that. He knows now he is insane? No, words fail me at this point.

According to the Daily Mail, Fritzl may be charged with murder in connection with the death of Elisabeth's baby son twelve years ago, at just three days old.

The rapes, "started later, only when she was down below," locked up at the age of 18, in the cellar, 60m square with a 1.70 metres high ceiling, and no windows, which he had organised in order to create a new family there, he added.

"When I went into the cellar, I took flowers to my daughter and soft toys for the children," he related, stressing that he watched adventure films with the children while his daughter Elisabeth cooked their favourite meals. "And then we sat down together to eat round the kitchen table." Before the locking up, the incestuous father had had and raised seven children, one of them Elisabeth, with his wife Rosemarie.

La décision de l'adoption de trois des enfants par les "grands-parents" aurait été prise parce que ces trois bébés étaient plus maladifs que les autres, selon les déclarations relatées par l'avocat. Josef Fritzl a également confié à son défenseur avoir grandi comme enfant unique dans une famille modeste. Son père a quitté le domicile lorsqu'il avait 4 ans et c'est sa mère "une femme forte, qui (lui) a appris la discipline et l'ordre".

The decision for the adoption of three of the children by the, "grand parents," was taken because these three babies weaker than the others, according to statements related by the lawyer. Josef Fritzl also confided to his defence lawyer having grown up as an only child in a family of modest means. His father left when he was four years old and it was his mother, "a strong woman who taught him discipline and order."

"J'ai grandi à l'époque nazie, lorsque régnait la discipline et l'obéissance. J'ai probablement inconsciemment adopté un peu de cela mais je ne suis pas un monstre", a-t-il souligné.

While Michel Fourniret is on trial for seven abductions and murders of young women and girls, the news about Josef Fritzl and his evil treatment of his daughter and the seven children bursts into the world's media. Two very evil men, parodies of all that is human.

The police think that Rosemarie, a woman described by her sister as, "dominated and constantly put down in public," by a despotic husband, was unaware of his activities in the cellar.

Commandée électroniquement, elle condamnait l'accès à l'abri antiatomique dans lequel Elisabeth a été détenue avec trois de ses sept enfants. «Nous avons demandé une expertise de cette porte imposante et sur le mécanisme de fermeture», a indiqué le chef de la police criminelle de Basse-Autriche, Franz Polzer.

But this point still raises questions for the Austrian press, the serious daily Kurier running a headline, "What did the wife know?" The head of social services, Heinz Lenze, came to the defence of his team on Tuesday, saying that they had proceeded with all the checks which they thought were necessary. "There were no suspicions about the actual presence of the mother in the cellar of that house," he stated and so, no reason to proceed to a search which perhaps would have allowed the case to be revealed much sooner.
Since the first adoption in 1994, the social workers have visited the Fritzls 21 times to make sure that the children were well.

Pour le quotidien Der Standard, «il est particulièrement choquant et révoltant de savoir que les voisins ne savaient rien, n'ont rien vu, tout en expliquant devant les caméras qu'ils avaient bien eu l'impression qu'il se passait quelque chose d'étrange».
Le chancelier autrichien Alfred Gusenbauer a en revanche promis d'empêcher que l'image de son pays ne soit ternie par cette sordide histoire, deux ans après l'affaire Natascha Kampusch. «Il n'y a pas d'affaire d'Amstetten, il n'y a pas d'affaire de l'Autriche, il n'y a qu'un cas particulier», a-t-il souligné à la sortie du Conseil des ministres.

Fear and misunderstanding.

On Tuesday evening, hundreds of shocked Amstetten residents, held a candle lit vigil as a sign of hope after the drama. A border of candles was formed in the main square of the town of 23,000 inhabitants, situated a hundred kilometres from Vienna.
The austrian press continues to ask questions. "A confession and 1,ooo questions," was headlined on Tuesday by the daily Kurier, suggesting that the, "double life of Josef Fritzl was still hiding many secrets."
For the daily, Der Standard, "it is particularly shocking and revolting to know that the neighbours knew nothing, saw nothing, while explaining before the cameras that they had had the impression that something strange was going on."
The Austrian Chancellor, Alfred Gusenbauer, has however, promised to prvent the image of his country becoming tarnished by this sordid story, two years after the Natascha Kampusch case. "There is no Amstetten case, there is no Austrian case, there is only a particular case," he stressed on leaving the council of ministers.

Six mois d'enquête

Malgré les aveux de Josef Fritzl, Franz Polzer a estimé lundi que l'enquête pourrait durer encore «six mois».
