L'ex-compagnon de Monique Olivier, épouse et complice présumée de Michel Fourniret, jugé par les assises des Ardennes pour sept meurtres, a dépeint lundi l'accusée comme une "paumée" lors d'un témoignage fantasque qui a poussé la cour jusqu'aux éclats de rire. "C'est une paumée. Je ne comprends pas cette fille. Elle ne fait que raconter des âneries", à déclaré à la barre André Michaux, ex-compagnon de Monique Olivier pendant une douzaine d'années dans les années 70, et père de deux de ses trois garçons.

The ex-partner of Monique Olivier, wife and alleged accomplice of Michel Fourniret, on trial at the Ardennes assizes for seven murders, described the accused on Monday as, "loser," during a whimsical witness statement which brought the court to outbursts of laughter. "She is a loser. I don't understand that girl. All she does is talk rubbish," stated André Michaux at the bar, Monique Olivier's partner for a dozen years in the 1970s, and father of her three sons.

Après six semaines de procès consacré à l'examen des faits, la cour se penche depuis lundi sur la personnalité des accusés, en commençant par l'examen de la personnalité de Monique Olivier. Lunettes de soleil sur le front, collier de barbe blanche, l'ancien gérant d'une auto-école de Nantes aujourd'hui retraité, a témoigné à la barre pendant deux heures sur sa vie commune avec "cette dame-là" qu'il n'a jamais voulu nommer. "C'est une fille spéciale, je n'ai même pas pu lui apprendre à nager. Je n'ai rien pu faire pour elle (...) Il y a quelque chose qui cloche, il lui manque une case", a-t-il ajouté, en niant toutefois l'avoir violentée.

After six weeks of the trial dedicated to the examination of th facts, since Monday the court directs itself to the personality of the accused, starting with the examination of Monique Olivier's personality. Sunglasses on his face, clipped white beard, the former manager of a Nantes driving school, now retired, gave evidence at the bar for two hours on his life, living with, "that woman there," whom he never wanted to name, "She is a special girl. I could not even teach her to swim. I could do nothing for her (...) There is something wrong somewhere, she is out of her box," he added, denying however, having raped her.

Tout au long de sa déposition, André Michaux n'a cessé d'interrompre le président de la cour, de couper la parole aux avocats ou d'invectiver les accusés, provoquant à plusieurs reprises l'hilarité de la salle d'audience, accusés compris, par son langage fleuri. André Michaux, qui accuse Michel Fourniret d'avoir tenté de l'assassiner à trois reprises, a traité l'accusé de "chef de bande, avec des romanichels qu'il m'a mis sur le dos". "Baissez le son, Monsieur", lui a intimé le président de la cour Gilles Latapie, avant de rendre les armes devant la faconde du personnage. "On n'a pas beaucoup ri jusque là, mais là on se rattrape", a finalement reconnu le président.

Monique Olivier was again described today as a woman under the influence, victim of both her husband and co-accused Michel Fourniret and her ex-partner André Michaux, who defended himself in a whimsical manner on accusations of violence carried out on her. She leaves home aged 22 to fall intot the hands of a violent husband.

Born in October 1948 in Tours into a family of craftsmen, Monique Olivier was an average pupil, with whom the parents spent very little time. Without her secretarial diploma, in spite of courses taken, she leaves home at 22 to follow the manager of a driving school nearby.
That man, André Michaux, thirteen years her senior, who was to be the father of her three sons, showed himself quickly, according to what she says, "violent," and, "jealous."
"He didn't like me to talk to anyone at all (...) If I brushed against a man in the street, he imagined that I was making advances," explained Monique Olivier.
One day, she recounts, he grabbed her by the hair, forcibly immersing her head in the bath tub, "as happens with the Arabs in Algeria." Another day he forced her to perform fellatio on a stranger.

Toute sa vie, elle n'aurait pas trouvé les moyens de se révolter contre ce que les hommes lui faisaient subir: «je ne suis pas capable de dire non, c'est dommage, je fais ce qu'on me demande».
Au cours du procès entamé le 27 mars, elle avait déjà justifié sa complicité avec Fourniret par «la peur permanente» qu'il lui inspirait.
«Je n'ai pas eu la vie que j'aurais aimée», concède-t-elle à voix basse au président Gilles Latapie qui lui lance «qui êtes vous Monique Olivier?».
Une fois de plus les avocats des parties civiles n'obtiennent aucune réponse lorsqu'ils tentent de savoir pourquoi elle est restée seize ans au côté de Michel Fourniret sans jamais le dénoncer.

I AM NOT CAPABLE OF SAYING NO.

All her life she had not found the means to revolt against what men made her suffer: "I am not capable of saying no. It is a pity. I do what I am asked."
During the trial which started on March 27th, she had already justified her complicity with Fourniret by, "permanent fear," which he inspired in her.
"I have not had the life which I would have liked," she concedes in a low voice to the president Gilles Latapie, who asks her, "who are you Monique Olivier?"
Once again the lawyers for the civil parties obtain no response while trying to find out why she stayed with Michel Fourniret for sixteen years without denouncing him.

A new case of negligence, involving a couple of Irish nationality and their three children, will be examined today by the court in Faro (Algarve) According to the residing magistrate, the GNR - the equivalent of the former Belgian gendarmerie - were alerted this weekend by staff at a Loulé hotel, reporting the presence of a totally drunk couple, close to a state of alcoholic coma, accompanied by three children.

Constatant l’état des parents, les agents de la police ont pris en charge les trois enfants, un bébé d’un an et ses frères de trois et six ans, jusqu’à l’arrivée d’une assistante sociale.

Noting the state of the parents, the police officers took charge of the three children, a one year-old baby and his two brothere aged three and six, until a social worker arrived.

Pendant que le couple, de 32 et 35 ans, a été conduit sans connaissance par une ambulance vers l’hôpital de Loulé (Algarve), les enfants, après avoir été examinés par un médecin, ont été confiées au Refúgio Aboim Ascensão, un centre d’accueil et d’aide à l’enfance, où ils sont arrivés vers cinq heures du matin.

L’information est reprise aujourd’hui par la presse britannique et portugaise ou, une fois encore, ont constate la différence de traitement donné par les journalistes des deux pays : si les portugais ont gardé l’habituel anonymat du couple, la presse britannique n’a pas hésité à divulguer l’identité des parents et, par conséquence, des enfants.

Enfants Kidnappés 5/05/08: McCanns backing out of the media spotlight.

This photo is published today on the Enfants Kidnappés web site. I thought it looked familiar. Isn't that the same clothes they were wearing when they did their appeal outside the church in Praia da Luz last year, soon after Madeleine disappeared? Maybe it's just the saddest photo that Enfants Kidnappés could find.

The McCanns are leaving the media spotlight again....haven't they done that a couple of times before? How many interviews in the past week? And why choose the Anglican church for the service to mark one year since Madeleine disappeared? Is the local Catholic church too small to accommodate all the news media? They've had a good run with the media machine and now they want to be left alone. Maybe it's not as easy as that. Perhaps a few journalists will still harp on about that reconstruction, the one that Gerry would do if it was televised, but now thinks would not be helpful.

At first glance today's article on the Enfants Kidnappés web site appears to be very much a repeat of the McCanns' media machine press releases, but I shall see what it looks like once I have translated it properly!

Les parents McCann, Kate et Gerry, veulent quitter la scène médiatique après le 12 mai. Date à laquelle Madeleine aurait fêté son cinquième anniversaire. C'est lors de l'une de leur dernière "entrevue" que le couple a déclaré qu'ils n'avaient survécu ces 12 derniers mois par le fait qu'ils ne se sont blâmer, ni l'un, ni l'autre. Et ils ont précisé qu'ils souhaitaient que l'attention des médias sur eux disparaisse. La couverture médiatique est "insoutenable" ont-ils dit. Ils ont même suggéré que cette couverture médiatique pourrait avoir conduit la PJ portugaise à les nommer "arguidos".

Leaving the media spotlight. (Or words to that effect!)

The McCann parents, Kate and Gerry, would like to leave the media spotlight after May 12th (So, not yet then?) the date on which Madeleine would have celebrated her fifth birthday. It was during one of their last, "interviews," that the couple stated they they had survived these last 12 months because they did not blame each other. And they stated that they wished the attention of the media on them would disappear. The media coverage is, "unsustainable," they said. They have even suggested that this media coverage could have led the PJ to name them, "arguidos." (Wasn't there something about dogs, traces of blood, and perceived inconsistencies in witness statements?)

Gerry a déclaré: "Regardez où cela nous a conduit et les problèmes que cela a créés. Je suis sur que la couverture médiatique a influencé ce qui s'est passé au Portugal en générant une pression, et quand les gens sont sous pression, de mauvaises décisions sont prisent... Nous avons lancé une campagne qui est très vite devenu un géant sur lequel nous n'avions aucun contrôle".

Garry stated: "Look at where that has led us and the problems that it has created. I a, sure that the media coverage has influenced what happened in Portugal in generating pressure, and when people are under pressure, bad decisions are taken...We launched a campaign that very quickly became a giant over which we had no control. (And a million quid, Gerry. Don't forget the million quid! - And that little online shoppe looks like a nice earner!)

Kate a déclaré: "Les informations sur mon mari et moi sont hors de propos et éloigne les gens de l'objectif initial: retrouver Madeleine. L'attention des médias diminuera après l'anniversaire de Madeleine, et c'est un soulagement".

Kate stated: "The information on my husband and me detracts from the subject and takes people away from the main objective: to find Madeleine. The attention of the media will diminish after Madeleine's birthday and that's a relief."

Les parents ont parlé de leur frustration dans l'enquête.

Gerry a déclaré qu'il était "extrêmement frustrant" de se voir refuser l'accès à l'ensemble des pièces du dossier: "Nous ne savons pas ce qui a été fait. C'est incroyablement frustrant". Kate parle également de sa colère quant au fait que les informations recueillies par les polices britanniques et portugaises n'aient pas été répercutée vers eux. Elle a juré de poursuivre les recherches de sa fille qui à son avis, a été enlevée et serait toujours en vie. "Nous n'avons accès à aucun éléments et nous n'avons aucune information sur ce qu'elle est devenue. De toute évidence, cette information existe. Nul ne peut exister sans être connu ou vu par quelqu'un. Il s'agit d'un crime odieux et d'une petite fille totalement innocente. Ce serait terrible si on ne continuait pas à chercher madeleine" déclare Kate.

The parents spoke of their frustration with the enquiry.

Garry stated that it was, "extremely frustrating," to be denied access to all the evidence in the file: "We don't know what has been done. It is incredibly frustrating." Kate also speaks of her anger about the fact that the evidence gathered by the British and Portuguese police has not been passed on to them. She vowed to continue the search for her daughter who, in her opinion, was abducted and will still be alive. "We have no access to any details and we have no information on what has developed. From all accounts, this information exists. Nothing can exist without being known or seen by somebody. It is a heinous crime on a totally innocent little girl. It would be terrible if they do not keep looking for Madeleine," states Kate. (Maybe it's because the police don't normally give suspects access to all the evidence!)

La thèse de l'homicide: un suspect portugais ?!

Le criminologue Barra da Costa garantit avoir un document indiquant un suspect "potentiel" déjà connus pour six crimes d'abus sexuels et qui pourrait être impliqué dans la disparition de Madeleine. Il considèrerait comme "très grave si le suspect n'était pas repris dans l'enquête en cours" menée par la PJ. Intervenant hier lors d'une conférence organisée par l'Association contre l'Exclusion par le Développement, l'ancien inspecteur de la PJ a préféré ne pas avancer plus de détails sur le suspect. "J'ai des informations très importantes qui permettent de sérieux soupçons au niveau d'une personne impliquée dans l'affaire. I find it slightly macabre that Kate McCann's message to the people of the church in Praia da Luz should be, "signed," by Maddie, who by most people's reckoning, is probably long gone from this earth. And did Kate really write, "Maddie.?" Surely there was a report very early on about Kate's telling a journalist that Madeleine hated being called Maddie?

Lydia Gouardo was raped and mistreated by her adoptive father for 28 years and bore six children by him. Apparently there were people who knew what was happening and they did nothing?
I am wondering how many more women have gone through similar experiences and maybe the publicity given to the Austrian case and to this one in France, will bring more women to disclose what has happened to them.

Lydia séquestrée et violée pendant 28 ans!

Lydia Gouardo, 45 ans, a connu un destin similaire à Elisabeth Fritzl: violée et maltraitée 28 ans durant par son père. L'histoire de cette Française n'a pas suscité le même émoi que celle de l'Autrichienne. A Meaux, puis à Coulomnes où elle habite toujours, Lydia a subi le pire: abus sexuels, séquestrations et actes de barbarie. Un calvaire qui a débuté en 1971 et qui a pris fin 1999 avec la mort de l'homme qui n'était pas son père biologique mais l'avait reconnue. De cette union « contre nature » naîtront six garçons.

Lydia was locked up and raped for 28 years.

Lydia Gouardo, aged 45, knew a fate similar to that of Elisabeth Fritzl: raped and mistreated for 28 years by her father. This French woman's story has not aroused the same excitement as that of the Austrian woman. In Meaux, then in Coulomnes where she still lives, Lydia suffered the worst sexual abuse, locking up and acts of barbarism. A suffering that began in 1971 and which came to an end in 1990 with the death of the man who was not her biological father but had adopted her. From this, "unnatural," union six boys were born.

Contrairement à Elisabeth Fritzl, Lydia n'a pas été enfermée dans un réduit inviolable et inconnu de tous. Son tortionnaire est parvenu à la garder constamment auprès de lui, pendant son enfance et jusqu'à ses 37 ans, en la terrorisant et en bénéficiant de l'aveuglement de la justice et des services sociaux. A Coulommes, les "voisins savaient", dénonce son compagnon, Sylvain Skirlo. Ils n'ont pas réagi, pas plus que les pouvoirs publics. Ni l'Education nationale (elle n'était pas scolarisée), ni le service d'action éducatif de Meaux qui l'a suivie de ses dix à ses dix-huit ans, ni les gendarmes Crécy-la-Chapelle, à qui une enquête a été confiée en 1996, ni les médecins qui ont eu à examiner les brûlures à l'acide chlorhydrique infligées par son père, ne sont venus à son secours.

Pas d'amertume pourtant chez Lydia Gouardo, dont le regard bleu semble éternellement innocent: "Quand j'ai appris ce qui est arrivé à cette femme, j'étais malheureuse pour elle. Elle a subi plus que moi. Si son père était mort, personne n'aurait su qu'elle était là ?".

People knew...

Unlike Elisabeth Fritzl, Lydia was not locked up in a cubbyhole that was impregnable and unknown to everyone. Her torturer managed to keep her constantly with him, during her childhood and until she was 37 years old, terrorising her and benefiting from the blindness of the law and social services. In Coulomnes the, "neighbours knew," stated her companion, Sylvain Skirlo. They did not react, neither did the public authorities. Neither the national education (she did not go to school), nor the education action service in Meaux who dealt with her from age ten to age eighteen, nor the Crécy-la-Chapelle police, to whom an investigation was entrusted in 1996, nor the doctors who had to examine the hydrochloric acid burns inflicted by her father, came to her aid.

Even so, there is no bitterness in Lydia Gouardo, whose blue eyes seem to be eternally innocent: "When I learned what had happened to this woman, I was sad for her. She suffered more than me. If her father had died, no one would have known where she was?"

Lydia saisit la justice mais n'obtient quasi rien

Son calvaire prend fin en 1999 avec le décès de son tortionnaire. En 2001, une enquête est à nouveau ouverte à la suite d'un signalement du service d'action éducative de Meaux. Elle débouche six an plus tard sur un procès: Lucienne Ulpat, la concubine de Raymond Gouardo, qui avait assisté sans rien dire au calvaire de Lydia, est condamnée à 3 ans de prison avec sursis pour "non dénonciation de crime". Peine dérisoire et injuste pour Lydia, qui fait appel.

La cour d'appel de Paris tranche le 18 avril: Lucienne Ulpat est condamnée à 4 ans de prison avec sursis pour "non-dénonciation de crime", mais également pour agression sexuelle sur un des fils de Lydia, alors qu'il avait moins de 15 ans. La cour réduit en revanche les dommages et intérêts dus à Lydia (6.000 euros au lieu de 15.000 en première instance). "La vieille n'ira jamais en prison, alors que j'ai été enfermée toutes ces années", soupire Lydia. "Depuis le jugement, je déprime. Je pleure tout le temps. Encore du sursis ! Et je n'ai pas pu faire témoigner mes enfants, mon frère, ma soeur. Ce procès leur était dû, à eux aussi". (RTL)

Her suffering came to an end in 1990 with the death of her torturer. In 2001, an enquiry was once again opened, following a report by the education action service in Meaux. It led to a trial six years later: Lucienne Ulpat, Raymond Gouardo's mistress, who had helped him without saying anything about Lydia's suffering, was given a three year suspended sentence for, "not informing about a crime." The court of appeal decided on April 18th: Lucienne Ulpat was given a four year suspended sentence for, "not informing about a crime," but also for sexual assault on one of Lydia's sons, when he was under 15 years of age. The court, however, reduced the damages and compensation due to Lydia (6,000 Euros instead of 15,000 in the first instance). "The old woman never went to prison, while I was locked up all those years," sighs Lydia. "Since the judgment, I am depressed. I cry all the time. Suspended again! And I could not call my children, my brother, my sister, as witnesses. This trial was their due too." (RTL)

"In all of my career, I have never heard of anything so atrocious," an investigator from Lydia's case stated in Libération on Saturday. It is indeed a sordid story, tragic, almost impossible to believe, which resurfaced on Friday before the court of appeal in Paris. Lydia Gouardo's step-mother, Lucienne Ulpat, appeared on appeal on Friday for not preventing a crime. She must have been aware of the cruelty and rapes suffered by her step-daughter during those years. The unfit father's accomplice, (he slept with his daughter and not with his mistress) she also tortured her and had sexually assaulted one of the sons of the plaintive. In the first instance in Meaux, a year ago, Lucienne Ulpat was given a three year suspended sentence and a fine of 15,000 Euros.

Acide, scie, marteau, lames de rasoir et éther pour « qu'au moins elle ferme sa gueule »

Raymond Gouardo, décédé en 1999, avait commencé ses méfaits sur sa fille quand elle n'avait que 8 ans, juste après l'avoir retirée de l'école. C'était à la suite d'un grave « accident » : Lydia Gouardo explique que sa belle-mère l'avait plongée dans une baignoire d'eau bouillante pour la punir. Après des semaines passées à l'hôpital à guérir de ses brûlures, elle restera 24h/24 avec son futur tortionnaire. Une source proche du dossier confie qu'elle a été par la suite régulièrement hospitalisée pour des brûlures à l'acide chlorhydrique infligées par son père. Jusqu'à la mort de celui-ci, Lydia aura subit les pires sévices, scie, marteau, lames de rasoir, tels étaient les instruments de torture utilisés par Raymond Gouardo. Les viols étaient fréquents et un premier enfant nait de ces incestes répétés quand elle a 20 ans. Cinq autres naissances suivront.

Raymond Gouardo, who died in 1999, had started his offences against his daughter when she was eight years old, just after having taken her out of school. This followed a serious, "accident." Lydia Gouardo explains that her step-mother had plunged her into a bath of boiling water to punish her. After weeks spent in hospital to heal from her burns, she would stay 24 hours a day with her torturer. A source close to the case confided that she was later regularly hospitalised for hydrochloric acid burns inflicted by her father. Until his death, Lydia was subjected to the worst cruelty, saw, hammer, razor blades, such were the instruments of torture used by Raymond Gouardo. The rapes were frequent and a first child of this repeated incest was born when she was 20 years old. Five other births followed.

Lucienne Ulpat, 68 ans, qui a toujours nié avoir été au courant des faits, s'est occupée de ces 6 enfants incestueux. Lydia Gouardo montre à Libération les questions qu'elle a notées sur des feuilles de cahier apportées à l'audience, pour ne rien oublier de dire à sa belle-mère. Les extraits cités par le quotidien sont éloquents : « Quand il me forçait à boire avec un entonnoir, pourquoi tu ne lui as rien dit ? (…) Et l'éther, ça sentait partout, tu disais : ‘Il faut ouvrir les fenêtres.' Mais lui te répondait : ‘Avec ça au moins elle ferme sa gueule.' (…) Tu voyais mon père avec moi dans mon lit, et tu disais : ‘Tu n'as pas encore fini ?' »

Lucienne Ulpat, aged 68, who has always denied being aware of the facts, involved herself with these six children of incest. Lydia Gouardo showed to Libération the questions which she had written in the pages of a notebook taken to the hearing, in order not to forget anything to say to her step-mother. The extracts cited by the daily say it all: "When he forced me to drink with a funnel, why did you say nothing to him? (....)And the ether, that smell was everywhere, you said, 'We should open the windows.' But he answered you: 'With that at least she shuts her mouth.' (....) You saw my father with me in my bed, and you said: 'You are not finished yet?' "

Village, médecins, services sociaux, tout le monde était au courant, mais personne n'a rien dit

Du village aux différents professionnels censés l'aider, tout le monde était au courant de son calvaire, mais personne n'a jamais révélé l'affaire. Libération avait enquêté en mai dernier lors du procès en 1ere instance dans le village de Coulomnes, en Seine-et-Marne, où habitait la famille. Les voisins ont confié qu'ils étaient tous au courant que le père était également le père des enfants de sa fille. « Il s'en vantait même. » disaient-ils. Pire, le maire de l'époque confirmait que tout le village savait, mais « Les gens qui font ces choses-là entre eux, on n'a pas à s'en mêler. C'est une famille d'indésirables dont on n'a jamais voulu ici. » Voilà le témoignage affligeant et sans compassion de l'ancien maire au journal.

Village, doctors, social services, everybody was aware, but no one said anything.

From the village to the various professionals supposed to help her, everybody was aware of her suffering, but no one exposed the facts. Libération had investigated last May during the first trial in the village of Coulomnes, in Seine-et-Marne, where the family was living. The neighbours confided that they were aware that the father was also the father of his daughter's children. "He even bragged about it," they said. Worse, the mayor at the time confirmed that the whole village knew but, "The people who did those things amongst themselves, people did not mix with them. It was an undesirable family which was never wanted here." There is the testimony, appalling and without compassion, of the former mayor to the newspaper.

La gendarmerie a bien été alertée plusieurs fois, mais aucune plainte n'a été déposée. « On est face à de très graves dysfonctionnements des services de l'Etat » conclut la source du journal.

Un procès en appel pour se sentir mieux, un peu

En arrivant au tribunal accompagnée de ses fils et de son compagnon, Lydia confiait qu'elle voulait deux choses : entendre sa belle-mère lui demander pardon et que le procès ne se déroule pas à huis-clos. La seconde demande sera rejetée par la présidente. Lucienne Ulpat était poursuivie pour des faits remontant à la période entre août 1998 et novembre 1999, les faits antérieurs étant prescrits. La cour d'appel devait également examiner une plainte d'une amie de Lydia qui aurait également été violée par Raymond Gouardo.

An appeal hearing to make herself feel a little better.

Arriving at the court accompanied by her sons and her companion, Lydia confides that she wants two things: to hear her step-mother ask for her forgiveness and that the trial does not take place in camera. Selon Pinto Monteiro, Procureur General de la République portugaise (PGR), les enquêteurs de la Police Judiciaire n’auraient pas de quoi en avoir honte si leurs investigations à la disparition de Madeleine McCann venaient à se révéler infructueuses car "il s’agit d’un crime très difficile d’élucider".

"Ce type de crime est toujours extrêmement difficile d'enquêter. Il y a un million d'enfants disparus par année dans le monde et moins de 20% sont retrouvées," à dit Pinto Monteiro soulignant que la police portugaise à fait tout ce qui était possible.

Le Procureur Générale de la République est nommé et exonéré par le Président de la République, sous proposition du Gouvernement. C'est le seule poste du Ministère Public et de la magistrature des tribunaux judiciaires sujet à désignation par le pouvoir politique. C’est à lui qu'incombe la direction, coordination et surveillance de l'activité du Ministère Public.

Two very evil men, parodies of all that is human.

La lourde porte en béton armé pose également des nombreuses questions aux enquêteurs. Commandée électroniquement, elle condamnait l'accès à l'abri antiatomique dans lequel Elisabeth a été détenue avec trois de ses sept enfants. «Nous avons demandé une expertise de cette porte imposante et sur le mécanisme de fermeture», a indiqué le chef de la police criminelle de Basse-Autriche, Franz Polzer.

Depuis la première adoption en 1994 les assistantes sociales se sont rendues 21 fois chez les Fritzl pour constater que les enfants allaient bien.

Pour le quotidien Der Standard, «il est particulièrement choquant et révoltant de savoir que les voisins ne savaient rien, n'ont rien vu, tout en expliquant devant les caméras qu'ils avaient bien eu l'impression qu'il se passait quelque chose d'étrange».
Le chancelier autrichien Alfred Gusenbauer a en revanche promis d'empêcher que l'image de son pays ne soit ternie par cette sordide histoire, deux ans après l'affaire Natascha Kampusch. «Il n'y a pas d'affaire d'Amstetten, il n'y a pas d'affaire de l'Autriche, il n'y a qu'un cas particulier», a-t-il souligné à la sortie du Conseil des ministres.

Fear and misunderstanding.

"There is no Amstetten case, there is no Austrian case, there is only a particular case," he stressed on leaving the council of ministers.

Six mois d'enquête

Malgré les aveux de Josef Fritzl, Franz Polzer a estimé lundi que l'enquête pourrait durer encore «six mois».
Le temps d'examiner les pièces à conviction que les enquêteurs sortent par cartons entiers de la maison où l'homme a séquestré sa fille Elisabeth, 42 ans, pendant 24 ans, avec trois des sept enfants issus de la relation incestueuse qu'il lui a imposée.
Il faudra aussi attendre que les victimes, réunies à l'abri des médias dans un service psychiatrique d'une clinique d'Amstetten-Maurer, retrouvent un équilibre psychologique suffisant pour pouvoir supporter une audition.
Elisabeth, cinq de ses enfants et sa mère Rosemarie suivent chacun une thérapie individuelle même s'ils sont réunis dans une même unité de soins, car ils sont «tous traumatisés à des degrés divers», a souligné mercredi le responsable de la clinique, Berthold Kepplinger.

Six months of investigation.

Avant toute chose son défenseur réclame une expertise psychiatrique. «Il faut déterminer si mon client est responsable de ses actes. Peut-être est-il schizophrène, il a tout de même eu une double vie», s'interroge-t-il dans le quotidien «Die Presse».
